What Do Angels Look Like in Islam?

Followers of Islam believe in the six articles of faith: without belief in all six, a Muslim's faith is not complete. One of these articles is a belief in angels. Although the Quran does not focus on detailed physical description of angels

1.The Form of Angels

Angels in Islam, believed to be the creation of Allah, are said to be made of light. As mystical celestial beings, angels can take any shape they wish in their efforts to carry out the work of Allah. In the Quran, angels appear in the form of man. When an angel visits Maryam, the Quran's version of the biblical Mary, surah 19 describes the scene: “Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man.” Other translations describe the angel as “a well-made man,” “a well-formed human being” or a “man without fault.”

2.Wings

Surah 35 of the Quran describes angels as “messengers with wings -- two, or three or four (pairs).” This description adheres to the traditional image of winged angels, but Islamic texts often emphasize multiple sets of wings, a distinct characteristic of angels in this faith. In one hadith, a collection of words attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud, one of Islam's first converts, claims that the angel Gabriel has 600 wings.

3.Other Characteristics

Muslims believe that angels record the deeds of men on earth, both good and bad. When a person's spirit leaves the physical word, angels receive the soul on its journey to the afterlife. Each Muslim is said to have two guardian angels, one for the day and one for the night, who both watch over the person and record her deeds for final judgment.

4.They have no gender

“One must remember that they [angels] are neither male nor female. The above mentioned verse alludes to this:

اَمۡ خَلَقۡنَا الۡمَلٰٓئِکَۃَ اِنَاثًا وَّہُمۡ شٰہِدُوۡنَ

[Did We create the angels females while they were witnesses? (Surah al-Saffat, Ch.37: V.151)]

“Here, God did not declare that angels are actually males; rather, He stated that these people claim that angels are females. What do they know, what they [angels] are? Were they present when God created the angels? … To state that angels are male or female is incorrect. Gender is related to physical beings, not to spiritual entities.” (Malaikatullah, Anwar-ul-Ulum, Vol. 5, p. 490)

5.They are of three ranks

“The angels have three ranks. They all do not belong to the same rank. Allah the Almighty states:

“[Those who bear the Throne, and those who are around it, glorify their Lord with (His) praise, and believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe, (saying): ‘Our Lord, Thou dost comprehend all things in (Thy) mercy and knowledge. So forgive those who repent and follow Thy way; and protect them from the punishment of Hell.’” (Surah al-Mu‘min, Ch.40: V.8)]

“This verse reveals three categories of angels, two of those from dalaalatun-nass [proven through textual evidence] and the third from ishaaratun-nass [indicated through text]. As it is stated that the first category is of those angels who bear Allah’s Throne and the second category is of those angels who encircle His Throne.

  1. Those who manifest Allah’s attributes
  2. Those who assist the first rank and are muqarrab to Allah
  3. Those who have been appointed smaller tasks. Their number cannot be determined, as Allah the Almighty states

6. They are countless in number

“Their number is immeasurable to human beings. Allah the Almighty states:

وَ مَا یَعۡلَمُ جُنُوۡدَ رَبِّکَ اِلَّا ہُوَ

“[And none knows the hosts of Thy Lord but He. (Surah al-Muddaththir, Ch.74: V.32)]

“Only Allah knows the number of angels. No one else.” (Malaikatullah, Anwar-ul-Ulum, Vol. 5, p. 493)
