US Targets Russian ‘Satan’ Missile

An amendment to the annual Pentagon budget bill, expected to pass this week, instructs President Obama to begin talks with the Ukrainian government aimed at ending long-standing cooperation between Kiev and Moscow on the maintenance of their Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, or ICBMs. The long-range missiles are known in Russia as the RS-20s and dubbed by NATO as the SATANs.

During the Cold War, that Ukraine’s Yuzhnoye Design Bureau (UYDB) helped design and maintain the RS-20 missiles—as well as many, many other weapons. Today, the Ukrainian government continues to play a role in providing maintenance to the Russian missiles, as well.

A recently retired chief of staff for Russia’s strategic missile command, Viktor Yesin said, if the cooperation with Ukraine was halted, Russia had the capability to continue the maintenance of the RS-20 missiles, but also ..... “there will be difficulties” in part because the detailed plans and specifications for the missiles reside at the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau (UYDB).

The United States and its allies could benefit from the capability of the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau.”

I think Russia wouldn't care as much because SS-18 (Satan) already has a successor ICBM which is more powerful called Yars RS-24 it is more advanced than even TOPOL -12M. Even SS-18(Satan) has been re-modernized with solely Russian new control and functional software which the Ukrainians don't know about.

The PENAIDS or the decoys were designed,and built in Russia to avoid Ukrainians exposing it to America through expionage. The Ukrainians only do maintenance technically on the ICBM something the Russians can do themselves meaning Ukrainians means of revenu would stop which would certainly hurt them(Ukrainians) than Russia. May be Russia may do some retooling. Sooner the SATANS would be faced out .

Russia will develop a new 100 ton-liquid-propellant intercontinental ballistic missile to overcome the U.S.'s prospective missile defense system, Strategic Missile Forces chief Lt. Gen. Sergei Karakayev said.
A decision has been made to create a new silo-launched heavy missile that will have "enhanced capability to breach a hypothetical US missile defense system," he said.

The new missile will replace the Voyevoda R-36M2 Satan ICBM.

Russia has steadily decreased the number of operational SS-18s and by July 2009, only 59 (all of the 10 MIRV Mod 5 version) remain. About 40 missiles will have their service lives extended so that they remain in service until about 2020"

The new Bulava SSMB and Yars ICBMs are developed and built at a russian facility called Votkinsk Machine Building Plant.

By the end of 2010 the Russian Strategic Rocket Forces operated 70 Topol-M missile systems including 52 silo-based and 18 mobile systems. A further 8 missiles were to join the Forces by 2011–2012. The Topol-M is built by the same Votkinks plant.
