The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has seized 80 suspected smuggled used computer monitors following an intelligence-led operation at the Malaba border.
URA said it received information that five motorcyclists planned to smuggle the monitors into Uganda through the Nile B panya route at around 3:00 a.m. on July 31.
Enforcement officers laid an ambush and intercepted the lead rider. The remaining four motorcyclists reportedly turned back and hid the consignment in a nearby store.
The following day, fresh intelligence led officers to the storage facility, where all 80 used computer monitors were recovered.
URA said the goods are suspected to have been smuggled into the country in violation of customs laws. Under the East African Community Customs Management Act, the importation of used computer equipment such as laptops is prohibited.
The authority said the operation highlights its continued efforts to crack down on smuggling along illegal border routes.
