An unidentified armed force is planning attacks on government installations in Acholi sub-region in northern Uganda, Santo Okot Lapolo the Gulu Resident District Commissioner (RDC) has revealed.
However, the RDC who described the gunmen as “criminals” is quoted to have said that government is ready to repel any rebel attacks like it successfully did with Joseph Kony led the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).
revelation come just a month after unknown gunmen attacked a Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) camp at Opit Trading Centre in Lakwana Sub-county where two people including a toddler were killed and eight guns stolen.
Without revealing more details, the UPDF 4th Division spokesperson Lt Kato Hassan Kato, said investigations had revealed critical information and some suspects have already been arrested.
The attack on UPDF camp left residents in panic with most saying it could renewed rebel activities.
Guns had gone silence in the region following 20 years of Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army rebel activities that left a number of civilians and security officers dead.
By 2004, the LRA had abducted more than 20,000 children, while 1.5 million civilians had been displaced and an estimated 100,000 civilians killed.
