Uganda Cranes earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against hosts Tunisia in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Hammadi Agrebi Stadium in Radès.
Rogers Mato was Uganda’s hero, cancelling out Alaa Arous’ early goal to secure the Cranes’ first-ever point against Tunisia.
The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute when Arous tapped home Khalil Ayari’s corner after Uganda’s defence was caught flat-footed.
Despite the early setback, Paul Put’s side remained composed and gradually grew into the game, taking control of the tempo before halftime.
Put made his first change in the 63rd minute, bringing on James Bogere for Travis Mutyaba. The substitution paid off five minutes later when Mato brought Uganda level.
Mato controlled a precise cross from Nathan Asiimwe before calmly slotting the ball into the net.
Uganda then managed the remaining minutes effectively to secure a valuable away point.
Put’s 3-5-2 formation helped Uganda crowd the midfield and limit Tunisia’s central play, forcing the hosts to rely more heavily on the wide areas.
The Cranes will return to action on Tuesday, September 29, when they host Libya at Hoima City Stadium.
