Liverpool face daunting Champions League draw after being confirmed in Pot 3

Liverpool have been confirmed in Pot 3 for their Champions League return after their faint hopes of being seeded second were ended at the weekend. CSKA Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg securing their place in next season's competition meant Brendan Rodgers men cannot now climb into Pot 2 if certain teams fail to reach the group stages in August.

Liverpool will almost certainly be drawn in a group with one of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid or Benfica in what will be their first Champions League campaign since 2010. They could also face Porto provided the Portuguese giants win their play-off round tie.

It is a similar scenario for Premier League champions Manchester City, who have graduated to Pot 2, thanks in part to the domestic failings of Manchester United, AC Milan and Inter Milan

Celtic reinstated to Champions League after Legia Warsaw error

Celtic have been reinstated to the Champions League after Legia Warsaw were kicked out of the competition for fielding an ineligible player.

Legia won the third qualifying round tie 6-1 on aggregate but brought on Bartosz Bereszynski in the second leg, while he was supposed to be suspended.

As a result Celtic were handed a 3-0 'walkover' win for the second leg, taking them through on away goals.

Legia have five days to appeal and have asked for Uefa's reasoning.

  • Arsenal drawn away to Besiktas, third in the Turkish Super League last season, and the new club of former Chelsea striker Demba Ba, in the first leg of their play-off tie on 19 or 20 August.
  • Celtic drawn away to Slovenian champions Maribor in the first leg on either 19 or 20 August.
  • Other play-off ties: Standard Liege against Zenit, FC Copenhagen v Bayer Leverkusen, Lille v Porto and Napoli against Athletic Bilbao.
