Kocha Kostadin Papic

Vicky Kimaro

It was the day Dimitar Berbatov reminded Manchester United why he finished as the joint winner of last season's Golden Boot. This was the first time he has started a league fixture since September, and it can all feel faintly ludicrous when he scores goals with this level of expertise.
Berbatov, lest it be forgotten, has been marginalised at Old Trafford to the point he can start talking to potential buyers from Sunday onwards, only six months away from being a free agent. After three months on the edges he needed a big performance and it was duly delivered on a day when Wayne Rooney stepped aside to let him complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot and the champions recorded their second successive 5-0 win to pull level with the leaders Manchester City. In the space of 16 days Alex Ferguson's team have clawed back a five-point deficit while closing the gap in terms of goal difference from 17 to five. They have a golden chance to go top against Blackburn Rovers on New Year's Eve, the manager's 70th birthday.
In the process they continued their run of immaculate results against Wigan: now played 14, won 14, scored 45 and conceded four. Yet the latest rout had a note of controversy attached and Wigan were entitled to feel aggrieved after being left painfully vulnerable by Conor Sammon's red card six minutes before the interval and the latest example of Phil Dowd's erratic officiating.
Ferguson's team were leading 1-0, courtesy of Park Ji-sung's eighth-minute goal, when Dowd ruled that Sammon had swung an elbow into Michael Carrick's face, and from that point it quickly became a case of how many goals the home side could accumulate. Roberto Martínez, the Wigan manager, described it as "an incredible call" and a "shocking decision", coming just at the point when his team were having their first good spell. Ferguson described it as "harsh" and it was rare to see Martínez so angry and outspoken.
Berbatov doubled the home side's lead within two minutes, latching on to Darron Gibson's cross and holding off Antolín Alcaraz before swivelling and shooting all in one moment, sending a left-foot shot past Ali al-Habsi. His second, 13 minutes into the second half, was even better, starting with the exquisite first touch to control Antonio Valencia's pass, evade Gary Caldwell and give himself the shooting chance. The shot was still rising as it hit the roof of the net but an aggrieved Martínez was not among those wanting to congratulate the Bulgarian. Berbatov, he said, had used exactly the same technique as Sammon had when backing into Carrick.
Valencia scored the fourth with a wonderful diagonal shot on the run, thumping Carrick's lay-off through a congested penalty area, and Rooney's generosity as United's usual penalty-taker allowed Berbatov to get his third after the increasingly vulnerable Alcaraz had tripped Park inside the penalty area.
Wigan had played quite brightly until the sending-off and responded well to Park turning in the opening goal after a fine run on the left from Patrice Evra. In truth, their record against United is so abject it was difficult to imagine United surrendering their lead anyway. Yet on another day this could have been an opportune time to play at Old Trafford and Martínez was right when he said it had changed the entire complexion of the game.
This was an unorthodox and experimental United line-up, with Gibson handed a rare start and only two senior defenders, Jonny Evans and Patrice Evra, available. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling had reported ill on Christmas Day, while Rio Ferdinand's back problems also resurfaced in training, meaning Carrick dropped back to play at centre-half and Valencia was used at right-back. Evans went off with a calf injury after a first half in which he found Victor Moses a difficult opponent, meaning he will be out for two weeks, and it left Evra at centre-half and the 19-year-old Zeki Fryers at left-back in a defence that, as Ferguson pointed out, had "never played together in their lives."
The sense was of a team that likes to show it can cope in difficult times and, though Martínez had every right to complain about Dowd, Wigan's grievances with the referee were undermined a little by the fact he had also missed a 16th-minute penalty for Alcaraz's hack at Javier Hernández's ankles.
As for Rooney, he was restricted to a substitute's role and played in midfield when he was introduced after 64 minutes. United had a full XI missing through injury or illness and, in the circumstances, they can reflect on a hugely satisfying December. Barring a shock against Blackburn, it will finish with them looking down on Manchester City.

[h=2]Chelsea 1-1 Fulham[/h] [h=1]Old swagger of Chelsea's Fernando Torres stubbornly refuses to return[/h] Honest endeavour cannot hide truth about Spanish striker's terrible loss of form for Chelsea

fernando-torres-007.jpg
Fernando Torres has scored only three league goals for Chelsea since his arrival 11 months ago. Photograph: Jed Leicester/Action Images

Just about the last thing Fernando Torres needed on Monday was a half‑time appearance by Jimmy Greaves, a rare visitor to the home of the club for whom, between the ages of 17 and 21, he scored 124 goals in 157 league matches. Now a portly 71-year-old, the immortal Greavsie received an ovation from all quarters of the ground, not least from the visiting Fulham fans clustered in the old Shed End. Poor Torres once again toiled without reward, the £50m striker failing to add to the three Premier League goals scored since his arrival 11 months and 26 appearances ago.
Torres's first league goal for Chelsea came against West Ham United on 23 April, ending a scoreless spell of 903 minutes. Could anyone imagine such a drought ever having engulfed Greaves, who went on to score 220 times in 321 league matches for Tottenham Hotspur? When he turned up to play against your club back in the 60s, the one thing you could be pretty sure of was that he would score, and it would probably be the winner.
Given the size of Roman Abramovich's investment and Torres's record with his previous clubs, no one will be willing to write the Spaniard off just yet. His time at Stamford Bridge, however, is looking very much like a failure, and you can imagine a cheque being snatched from the hands of any club willing to come close to the sum paid to Liverpool at the start of the year.
It could be said that Greaves, too, suffered a major setback in his career. In the summer of 1961, to the player's dismay, Chelsea accepted a large offer from Milan, but his time at San Siro, under the great manager Nereo Rocco, lasted only a few months. Even then, unsettled as he was, he managed to score nine goals in 12 appearances for the Rossoneri in the demanding context of a defence-obsessed Italian league.
On Monday André Villas-Boas picked Torres in the starting lineup for only the seventh time in the league this season, and the first time since the end of October. The manager must have been hoping that, facing a Fulham defence which shipped five goals against Manchester United last week, his troubled forward would be able to make a strong claim for preferment when Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou go off to the Africa Cup of Nations next month.
The Spaniard could certainly not be faulted on the grounds of effort. He was prominent in the opening exchanges, engaging in a series of physical tussles with Danny Murphy, the Fulham captain, who was occupying the shielding role in Martin Jol's tightly compressed 4-1-4-1 formation. Murphy nicked the ball away from Torres, Torres stole it from Murphy, and then the Spaniard went down clutching his upper thigh after the Englishman had raised his boot in a 50-50 challenge. The retaliatory foul came a few minutes later, soon after Torres had failed to connect with Daniel Sturridge's low cross to the near post.
Is it just a prolonged streak of misfortune that is dragging Torres down, or some weakness in himself? In the 16th minute he judged the flight of Juan Mata's diagonal chip from the right to perfection, meeting it on his chest as it dropped over Philippe Senderos's head and holding off Stephen Kelly as he hooked his volley towards goal from close range. All the way through Torres's career, until his arrival in west London, such moments led to celebration. But things have changed so radically that it was no surprise when this time, unfortunately for him, the shot found David Stockdale in the perfect position. It was the first of several excellent saves that made the young English goalkeeper the game's outstanding individual.
Torres toiled on, robbing Brede Hangeland in a dangerous position and feeding Sturridge for a shot sliced wide from 15 yards, then committing his own error of marksmanship when moving on to Mata's pass on the right-hand edge of the area and hitting a full wedge when a low two-iron was required. Some of his gifts are intact – late in the first half he showed immaculate touch and composure to turn on the ball and leave three opponents stranded on the halfway line – but he enjoyed a lucky break two minutes after the interval when he tried to control Ashley Cole's diagonal ball but ending up by nudging it to Mata, whose deft shot gave Chelsea a short-lived lead.
The arrival of Drogba after 70 minutes saw Torres moved out to the right, in place of the withdrawn Sturridge, but it was noticeable that in the final, convulsive phase of the match, when Stockdale was bravely repelling a fusillade from Drogba, Raul Meireles and Florent Malouda, the Spaniard was merely a spectator.

Blackburn Rovers lead a double life away from home, and taking a welcome break from the poisonous atmosphere at Ewood they quite enjoyed themselves in earning a deserved point at Anfield. They played with a freedom that belied their lowly league position. Whether that entitled them to a share of the spoils from a game in which Liverpool did almost all the attacking is a point that will be hotly debated on Merseyside, though this was not a match in which the home side were unlucky or denied by goalkeeping heroics, at least not until right at the end. Liverpool were quite pedestrian for much of the game, and for all their pressure did not do enough to deserve a win.
"The team performance wasn't faultless, but a lot of other sides would have been happy with it," Kenny Dalglish, the Liverpool manager, said. "We made more than enough chances to win but once again we didn't convert enough of them." Steve Kean was much the happier, though he would not go as far as to suggest he now prefers playing away from home. "It's all about getting your noses in front," the Blackburn manager said. "That's what we did here, and if we could do that at Ewood maybe the frustrated supporters would cheer us like they did at Anfield.
"We had a patched-up side with five players from last season's reserves' cup final, but you could still see the belief. That has always been there, and I just hope we can win the supporters over. We are running out of bodies though, particularly defenders, and we will be looking to bring in at least four established players in January."
Liverpool did not take to the field wearing T-shirts this time, though there were plenty in the crowd who had availed themselves of the Luis Suárez gesture garment over Christmas. There was such a lot going on around this game, with the Kop trilling through a new anthem to the Uruguay striker and the Blackburn supporters in the Anfield Road end laying off Kean for a change but making a most unseasonal suggestion about where Venky's could stick their chickens, it was easy to forget the actual football. Mostly because a lot of it was eminently forgettable.
Suárez had four shooting chances in the opening 20 minutes but missed the target on each occasion. Dalglish had brought Andy Carroll back into the starting lineup after the goalless draw at Wigan, but when he was presented with a chance after half an hour he shot straight at Mark Bunn from a couple of yards out. Suárez found the side-netting with Liverpool's best chance of the first half, after beating both Grant Hanley and Adam Henley twice over, but otherwise the first 45 minutes were dull and uneventful until Blackburn woke everyone up by snatching an opener on the stroke of the interval.
Content up to that point to hold their own in midfield without seriously threatening in attack, it always seemed likely that the visitors would look to free-kicks or set pieces to score, and when Daniel Agger rather clumsily conceded a corner under only token pressure from Yakubu Ayegbeni the accuracy of Morten Gamst Pedersen's delivery helped Rovers take full advantage. The corner was intended to pick out Mauro Formica's run to the near post, and almost did, though the Argentinian would have found it difficult to flick the ball past Pepe Reina from a narrow angle with his back to goal and was grateful to see that task performed by Charlie Adam's outstretched leg.
The midfielder's second own goal of the season at least guaranteed a livelier second half, and sure enough Liverpool came out and put the Kop end goal under siege. They still lacked a cutting edge, with neither Suárez nor Carroll able to accept a couple of half-chances, until sheer pressure caused Blackburn to buckle after eight minutes of backs-to-the-wall defending. When Stewart Downing's umpteenth cross was met by Chris Samba's umpteenth headed clearance, the ball was smartly volleyed back into the box by Martin Skrtel, and with Blackburn's central defenders not quite back in position Maxi Rodríguez was able to head home unopposed at the far post.
Downing was easily Liverpool's brightest attacker, consistently finding space on the right from which to cross, even if most of the crosses kept finding the heads of Samba or Hanley. As if Henley, making his first league start at left-back, was not finding life difficult enough against the England winger, he was lucky to get away with a trip on Suárez after the Uruguayan had cleverly taken a quick free-kick and raced to collect a return pass. After 69 minutes, Dalglish chose that moment to send on Steven Gerrard for his first game for two months, replacing Adam, who had been shaping to take the free-kick. The cheer when Gerrard was announced among the substitutes had been the loudest of the afternoon, and for a moment it appeared he might be about to announce his comeback with a winning goal in front of the Kop with his first touch of the ball, but he crossed instead of shooting from the free-kick and Rodríguez headed over.
Suárez also headed over before the end, Carroll put a free header inches wide from José Enrique's cross and Downing forced a save from Bunn, but even with Craig Bellamy added to the attacking mix Liverpool could not find a way through. In stoppage time Bunn, deputising for the injured Paul Robinson, got down to his right to save brilliantly from Carroll, and Agger saw a last-gasp header cleared off the line by Henley, but though Liverpool's late charge was impressive it was ultimately too late.
"There can't be many tougher places to make a full debut, but young Adam [Henley] did brilliantly," Kean said. "This is a great stage to play football, and I told all the lads just to have the courage to play. You don't want to leave Anfield with any regrets."

[h=1]Sir Alex Ferguson hails injury-hit Manchester United after Wigan rout[/h] • Chris Smalling and Phil Jones both called in sick
• Jonny Evans injured during 5-0 thrashing of Wigan

Sir Alex Ferguson praised his Manchester United team for their strength of character after they had pulled level with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League despite a run of injuries and illness that has left him with a full XI of players needing treatment.
United's 5-0 thrashing of Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford means they have also reduced the goal difference with City to five when they were 17 behind a little over two weeks ago. With Roberto Mancini's team drawing 0-0 at West Bromwich Albion, United can apply more pressure by moving clear at the top against Blackburn Rovers on New Year's Eve.
However, Ferguson's satisfaction was tempered by the fact his team finished the match without a fit senior centre-half and the longest list of absentees in the top division. Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra had to experiment in central defence on a day when Dimitar Berbatov, starting his first league match since 24 September, scored the fourth hat-trick of his United career.
"We have had a nightmare in the last few days," Ferguson said. "Phil Jones came down ill, Chris Smalling was ill and Rio called off with a back injury in training, all within a few hours of each other. Then Jonny Evans came off injured at half- time. It does put some pressure on but fortunately we had a good first half and we've managed to get through the game and score some goals.
"I said some weeks ago someone is going to suffer against us and we are really hitting good form now. There's a real goal threat from us from all departments. It's a long season and, if we can be top or joint top on New Year's Day, I'll be happy."
City do not play until then, when they go to Sunderland, and Mancini was unimpressed by his team's performance at The Hawthorns. "In games when the opposing players all get round the ball, we need to improve. Against Stoke last week [a 3-0 win] it was the same and we will probably have another eight or nine games in the next 20 days like this."
Mancini added: "We are a strong team, United are a strong team. We know it is impossible to stay on the top for 38 games."
United were helped by the referee Phil Dowd showing Conor Sammon a 39th‑minute red card when the striker caught Michael Carrick with a flailing arm. The score was 1-0 at the time and the Wigan manager, Roberto Martínez, described it as a "shocking" and "unbelievable" decision. "I would like to believe my players get the same treatment as Chelsea's and Manchester United's," he said.
Carrick agreed that Sammon was "a bit unlucky", conceding that "it wasn't an intentional elbow" and Ferguson also felt Dowd had done his team a favour. "I didn't think it was intentional," the manager said. "He [Sammon] is a big, aggressive lad and he throws his body around a lot. He caught Michael across the face but it was the hand rather than the elbow."
Carrick believes United have answered their critics. "Keep criticising," he said. "We don't mind. Since I've been here we've had it at some stage every year and more or less we've had good seasons. We know the potential we've got here and how well we've been playing of late."

[h=1]Roberto Mancini angry at Liverpool's 'extra 48 hours' before key game[/h] • Manchester City coach criticises Premier League fixtures
• Extra rest time 'can make a difference'

Roberto Mancini has criticised the Premier League for scheduling the next round of fixtures in a way that means Liverpool will have two days' extra rest before their away game against Manchester City a week on Tuesday.
Liverpool are at home against Newcastle United on Friday night and City face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon, giving Kenny Dalglish's players close to an extra 48 hours to recover for the match at the Etihad Stadium. Mancini, who watched with frustration here as his team failed to score for the first time in domestic football this season, said that he was "not happy" with the Premier League for giving Liverpool a clear advantage going into their game against City and one that could impact on the title race.
"I am disappointed only because we play 1 January and 3 January and Liverpool play 30 December and then 3 January against us. I think that at this moment this is not correct," the Manchester City manager said. "I'm not happy with this situation because two days [of rest] in this moment when we play every three days is not correct. Sometimes the fixtures can [be] better because to play one game after four days and for us after 48 hours can make a difference."
Mancini's post-match mood will not have been helped by the sight of Manchester United hauling themselves level on points with City at the top. He expects Sir Alex Ferguson's side to be three points clear after their home match against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. "I think United will win [their] next game and it's more difficult for us against Sunderland away and then within 48 hours again," he said. "But I'm confident we can do a good job by the end."
Although David Silva squandered a wonderful chance and Mario Balotelli and Sergio Agüero both threatened, City struggled to break down a West Bromwich Albion side who were tactically superb and thoroughly deserved a point. Albion might have come away with an even better result but Shane Long headed wide in the second half and Jerome Thomas hit a post.
"We don't keep many clean sheets, so it's good to do it against a side of City's calibre," said Hodgson, who believes that United have started to turn the screw in the title race.
"In some ways the riches are on the blue side of Manchester but to some extent the quality and talent are on the red side. City could virtually put out two Premier League sides and United have been unlucky with injuries. But the important thing is United beat Fulham 5-0 away in the week and have put five past Wigan today. They're flying."

[h=1]Fergie wants first place for his birthday[/h] Published 22:31 26/12/11 By David McDonnell

Sir Alex Ferguson has challenged his Manchester United players to give him the perfect 70th birthday present - top spot in the Premier League.
After United wiped out Manchester City's lead by demolishing Wigan at Old Trafford, Fergie urged his squad to claim top spot outright when they host bottom side Blackburn on New Year's Eve.
City do not play Sunderland until the following day and the United manager seized on the chance to strike a major psychological blow over Roberto Mancini's side in the title race.
Mancini looks to be feeling the heat already with the City boss reacting to his side's 0-0 draw at West Brom by complaining at the fixture pile-up facing his side in January.

Ferguson said: "As I always say it's a long season. If we're top of the Premier League or joint top with City on New Year's Day, then I'll be happy."
City play Liverpool on January 3, just 48 hours after facing Sunderland, and Mancini hit out at what he sees as an unfair fixture list which could ultimately handicap his side's title chances.
"I'm disappointed because we play on January 1 and January 3," said Mancini. "Liverpool play December 30 and then January 3 against us.
"I think that at this moment this is not correct. I expect United to win their next game.
"We play away at Sunderland and then against Liverpool 48 hours later.
"I'm not happy, I don't know why this situation. Two extra days in this moment is not correct.
"Sometimes the fixture list can do better because for Liverpool to play the game after four days and for us after 48 hours can make a difference."
United's victory made it eight wins and a draw from their last nine Premier League games since their 6-1 derby mauling by City at Old Trafford two months ago.
Ferguson paid tribute to the character of his side for continuing their winning run against a backdrop of mounting injuries, with 11 players now missing through injury or illness.
"We've had a nightmare the last few days," said Ferguson. "Jones came down ill, Smalling is ill, Rio called off with a back injury, while Evans came off injured at half time.
"It does put some pressure on but fortunately we had a good first-half and we got an early goal which helped us.
"The consistency of the team is very good now. Injuries are mounting up; we are getting our fair share.I'm certainly hoping Jones and Smalling will recover from illness, which will make a difference.
"But I think I said some weeks ago that someone was going to suffer and we're really hitting good form now.
"There's a real goal threat from us from all departments."
Dimitar Berbatov grabbed the fourth hat-trick of his United career and Ferguson said: "It was the right game for Dimitar.
"We needed his height to defence against set-pieces and this will help his confidence.
"He's not had the best of starts to the season in terms of selection, with the options I have in Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck."

Chelsea boss Roman Abramovich has booked rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers to play his New Year's Eve bash on St Barts.
Three hundred guests have been invited to see in 2012 on the Caribbean paradise island, where the Russian billionaire has an estate.
Last year, partygoers, including actress Salma Hayek and Star Wars creator George Lucas, only found out when they arrived if they were on the guest list, it was reported.
A source said they get the good – or bad – news from, "a girl sitting at the port with a laptop on her desk where the yachts pull up, telling people if their name is on the list".

[h=1]I'm glad I picked Swansea over QPR grins Danny Graham[/h] Published 22:30 26/12/11 By Phil Cadden

Danny Graham insists he made the right decision to join Swansea City over Queens Park Rangers.
Graham signed for the Welsh side in a club-record £3.5million deal from Watford last summer despite offers from several Premier League clubs including Neil Warnock's men.
And the 26-year-old's gut feeling has been vindicated as Swansea lie above the Londoners in the table ahead of their relegation clash at the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday.
Graham said: "I went to speak to QPR and I was tempted by them, to be fair. They are obviously a club on the up and they have a lot of money to back that up.

"But, in terms of the football sense, I thought Swansea was better suited for me.
"I am a centre forward and can be a targetman but I like to play football as well.
"The way Swansea play football, they pass and move and have fast wingers so I thought it was better for my development as a player. The style of football was the main factor for me coming here.
"I'm glad I've joined Swansea City. It won't be a problem facing QPR. I also spoke to West Brom. It's just part and parcel of football."
Graham, who was the top-scorer in the Championship with 24 goals last season, has continued his goal-scoring exploits where he left off with five goals so far this term.
But the Geordie forward admits he wants to keep hitting the back of the net and repay the faith shown in him by Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers.
Graham added: "To spend £3.5million is a heck of a lot of money for a club of the size of Swansea City is no mean feat and smashed the club record by a couple of million pounds so I want to score goals to repay Brendan.
"He was on the phone to me the morning after the play-off final and he tried to sign me before the window closed in January.
"He was also the person who set up the deal for me to go to Watford from Carlisle so he has shown how much he rates me as a player and how much he believes that I can come in and score goals.
"I have finally got the chance to work with him which is great. I'm loving every minute of it.
"I was always confident I would score goals in this league. That's not being arrogant or big-headed, it's just about having belief in my ability."
Neil Taylor is set to start despite a knee injury which forced him to be replaced in the 1-0 defeat at Everton last Wednesday.

[h=1]Wenger: 2012 will be the Year of the Ox[/h] Published 23:00 26/12/11 By John Cross

Arsene Wenger has claimed 2012 will be Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's breakthrough year.
The 18-year-old has been left frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities and the £12million signing has even struggled to make it onto the bench.
Fabio Capello even talked about Oxlade-Chamberlain being an outside chance for the Euros, but England's bright new hope has barely had any openings.
Arsenal boss Wenger insists he is now ready to let the England Under-21 winger off the leash and believes he has the potential to be one of the stars of the Premier League in 2012.

Wenger, whose side entertain Wolves on Tuesday, said: "In 2012, at the beginning of the year, he will play games. He is not far away. He is a talented boy, it's all there – he just needs that toughness in the game because every game for us at the moment is so tight.
"The other night, again, I could have brought him on at Aston Villa and you have no hesitation to do it. But you do not want him to be a little bit overawed by the intensity of the game. He is ready to play.
"He is just missing that experience at the top level. You have to throw him a few games."
Oxlade-Chamberlain's only chance in the League came in the 8-2 drubbing at Manchester United and Wenger admits that defeat may have set him back.
The former Southampton forward has shown glimpses of his potential with stunning goals in the Champions League and Carling Cup but has not been given a chance in the League since the Old Trafford disaster.
"On the day, it was not a favour for anybody to come on. The team was completely lost and it was not the best of favours I've done," said Wenger.
Wenger is likely to use Oxlade-Chamberlain from the bench against Wolves while he will also get more opportunities when *Gervinho goes with the Ivory Coast to the African Nations Cup.
But Arsenal will be looking for out-of-form Andrey Arshavin to step into the breach and South Korean striker Park Chu-Young also to try and establish himself in the first team squad.
Wenger is looking at signing Arsenal legend Thierry Henry on a short-term loan from New York Red Bulls but insists he has a big enough squad to cope with Marouane Chamakh also going to the African Nations Cup. "We have a big squad. To add players to our big squad, we will have to see how we can balance our books as well," said Wenger.
"Then, we lose Chamakh and Gervinho for January – two strikers. Maybe Chamakh has not played too many games, but he is still a security that we have. So Park has to step up.
"The adaptation period for him is over now so he has to come in and show he has the quality to play for us. I believe he has. We also have Arshavin and Chamberlain, who is now ready, slowly, to play."
Wenger expects to see Jack Wilshere back in the early part of 2012 and Bacary Sagna could be the first of Arsenal's four injured *full-backs to return.
"Jack is doing very well, he is one week behind Bacary Sagna, so he should start to run outside next week," said Wenger. "He could be back in the team at the end of January, beginning of February.
"You could see that Sagna is ahead of schedule. I saw him still limping a little bit so we have to be careful but physically he will be ready very quickly because he worked very hard in the gym.
"We can think about him returning as soon as he will be capable to touch the ball. We think the end of January is a reasonable target."
Wenger, who is hoping Johan Djourou could be fit to be back in the squad after a groin injury, is expecting a tough game against Wolves.
The Frenchman says he admires the never-say-die spirit that opposite number Mick *McCarthy has instilled in his players.
"They are a side that plays good football. They always look dangerous going forward and they make it tough for everybody. They have the Mick McCarthy spirit and attitude, they never give up," said Wenger.
"They play a very positive game. They fight to stay in the league and you know it is always an intense game. They are dangerous and make life difficult for everybody."

[h=1]Villa fear Bent has suffered a fresh injury[/h] Published 23:40 26/12/11 By David Anderson

Alex McLeish fears record £24million signing Darren Bent may have suffered a fresh injury.
Bent pulled out of Boxing Day's draw with Stoke after feeling a twinge in his leg in light training session on the morning of the match.
Stoke 0-0 Aston Villa: Daily Mirror match report
McLeish claims the England striker will have a scan today and the Aston Villa boss is worried he may have suffered a new setback.

"He felt his injury in a light session in the morning," said McLeish. "He will have a scan and if there's fluid, then it's a fresh injury.
"If not, then it's the same one and he shouldn't be too far away from returning."
McLeish will be sweating on the results of the scan with Chelsea next up on Saturday and he lost Emile Heskey at half-time with a recurrence of his Achilles problem.
"I thought he would last 60 minutes, but by half-time the pain was intolerable and he had to come off," said the Scot.
McLeish was delighted with his side's battling display after their recent poor showings and praised Gabriel Agbonlahor for his goalline clearance.
Agbonlahor chested Marc Wilson's header clear after the ball had hit the underside of the bar.
"Gabby chested it with great composure and that and how we defended overall, were great plusses for us," he said. "It would have been a travesty if we had lost this game.
"Premier League football is cut-throat and unforgiving, but we at least deserved a point. We had that little break with Gabby's clearance, but Stoke had their breaks too with Heskey's header which hit the post."
Tony Pulis accepted that Wilson's header did not cross the line and admitted his side had been second best to Villa.
"I've not seen it, but the players don't think it crossed the line so I'll go with them," said the Stoke boss.
"We didn't get out of the starting blocks as quickly as we would have liked, but you have to give Villa credit for that.
"I knew it was going to be a tough game for us and this is the sixth draw away from home for Villa and they have done better away than at home. Also with it being a local derby and Boxing night, it was always going to be difficult, but we've come away with a point."

Wesley Sneijder's much-discussed move to Manchester United could be back on in the January window, according to reports.
It's claimed that Inter Milan are ready to sell the brilliant Dutch midfielder to finance a major rebuilding programme.
Sneijder was heavily linked with Old Trafford this summer but his £200,000-a-week wages were said to be a stumbling block.
However the move could be revived with Inter ready to deal, according to the Mail.

Fergie has repeatedly said he would not buy in this window, claiming last month: "It is not easy to get players in January.
"I am not quite sure if you went for a player if he could play in the Europa League. There is criteria there in the sense of playing in the Champions League and whether they could play in the Europa League.
"There are a lot of issues there but there is nothing in my mind at the moment."

[h=1]Five things we learned from the Boxing Day football[/h] Dimitar Berbatov has still got it but Ashley Cole appears to be losing it and Andy Carroll is just unlucky

Dimitar-Berbatov-007.jpg

[h=2]Berbatov's still got it[/h]One of the sadnesses of modern football and the prevalence of large squads is the talent that does not get to play. Given the circumstances of his departure, Spurs fans may think Dimitar Berbatov deserves all he gets, but for the rest of us the Bulgarian's re-emergence is a delight. He is perhaps too much his own man to play regularly at the very highest level, and his lack of pitch-time is presumably the result of his tendency to slow the game down, but he remains one of the few players it is worth focusing on even as the game happens elsewhere.
Berbatov seems somehow engaged in a permanent act of self-irony, as though demonstrating how illogical it is that 75,000 people should turn up to watch 21 other players hurtle around in pursuit of a ball. His shoulders seem hunched in an eternal shrug, his face forever expressing a bewilderment that people should strive so hard for what comes so naturally and easily to him. Would he be a better player if he didn't have that quality that Walter Smith once euphemistically described as "economy of movement"? Perhaps, but he wouldn't be the same player, and he wouldn't be such fun.
Against Fulham last week, he scored a deft spinning backheel, a goal that was quintessential Berbatov in its louche understatement. On Boxing Day, he contrived one goal by leaning into his marker, as though even standing up while scoring were too much of an effort, before adding a second with a magnificently smooth turn before a whipcrack finish with the outside of his right foot. That he completed his hat-trick with a penalty might have seemed banal, had he not left Ali al-Habsi kneeling with a shuffle in his run-up before rolling the ball past him.
Berbatov's contract expires at the end of the season, and it may be that with Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernández and Danny Welbeck, United decide they don't need him. If such a decision gets him more game time elsewhere, that may not be a bad thing for the wider world.
[h=2]Nobody is better at shape than Hodgson[/h]Even watching just the highlights it was beautiful to see: a line of four white shirts then, in front of it, another line of four that expanded and contracted according to the position of the ball, like some mythical monster that always returns to its original form no matter what pieces are hacked off by its opponents. Even Manchester City, with all their buzzing creators and the maverick genius of Mario Balotelli conjured only a handful of half-chances against West Bromwich Albion.
The experience of Liverpool raises questions about how transferable his methods are to a higher level, but Roy Hodgson is the perfect manager for West Brom. At Fulham, players acknowledged that training sessions were repetitive and tedious, featuring constant work on position, often without using the ball. Simon Davies admitted there was some resistance, until they saw the effect on the pitch; as they qualified for the Europa League the fact that training was boring didn't seem to matter – it was a means to a worthwhile end.
A top-seven finish is probably beyond West Brom this season, but the "shape and discipline" Hodgson praised after the game should be more than enough to ensure they finish comfortably above the relegation scrap.
[h=2]Carroll is unlucky[/h]Luck is the great unspoken in football, playing a far larger part than is usually admitted. A mathematician at All Souls College, Oxford, calculated that even to cancel out the impact of opponents' form (ie, it is easier to play a team after they have just lost four games than when they have just won four games), a season would need to be seven times longer than it is at present. One moment of good luck can give a player a surge of confidence, add an extra fraction of determination and decisiveness to his game; one moment of bad luck can have the opposite effect.
Andy Carroll may be struggling at Liverpool, but there have been signs he is not far off a return to form. Against Manchester City, he was denied a winner only by a superlative save from Joe Hart. On Monday, it was Blackburn's Mark Bunn who denied him, plunging to his right and slightly backwards to shovel Carroll's effort wide, a save so remarkable that Blackburn's players congratulated him almost as though it had been a goal. Carroll did nothing wrong with either the attempt against City or against Blackburn: but for the misfortune of finding two goalkeepers in exceptional form, he would perhaps be being hailed as the man who found two late winners.
On the other hand, he also put a good headed chance just wide a few minutes before Bunn's save; but then had he scored against City, had he had that extra surge of self-belief, he may have found the extra inch in his leap that would have guided that on target and Bunn's late save would have been an irrelevance.
The danger is that he comes to believe – as Fernando Torres perhaps has – that he is doomed and nothing will ever work again; but if he keeps meeting crosses like that, the goals will come eventually. Not every goalkeeper can save their best to deny him.
[h=2]Sunderland's Curse of the Carrot-Tops may be over[/h]Most Sundays, David Corner goes for a drink with the friend he shares a taxi business with in Sunderland. At least twice each Sunday afternoon, his friend reckons, somebody will come up to him and say, "Yer should've just put it out, Davie lad." Corner now works for Durham police. A couple of years ago, he was called to a disturbance in Seaham where a man was going berserk with an ornamental sword. All attempts to reason with him failed until he caught sight of Corner's flaming ginger hair. "Are yiz … are yiz Davie Corner?" he asked disbelievingly. Corner confirmed he was. The man dropped the sword and offered his hands to be cuffed. "Yer've not had much luck, son," he said. "So I'll give yer this 'un. But, Davie lad, why didn't yer just put it out?"
Whatever he does for the rest of his life, Corner will always be remembered on Wearside as the 18-year-old defender who tried to shepherd a through-ball out for a goal-kick in the 1985 League Cup final, only to have the ball nicked off him by John Deehan. His cross was half blocked and fell for Mick Channon, whose shot was deflected in off the chest of Gordon Chisolm, the only goal in Norwich's 1-0 win.
Corner hung around for 33 league starts before carving out a reasonable career at a lower level with Darlington and Gateshead, but he stands as the apogee of the curse of the carrot-tops. Since the departure of Micky Horswill for Manchester City in 1974, terrace wisdom has doubted that any ginger-haired player will ever play well for Sunderland: Corner is part of a dread tradition that includes Ian Wallace, Steve Whitworth, Tommy Lynch, Nigel Saddington, Gary Ogilvie, Chris Lumsdon and Paul McShane.
Perhaps, though, that is beginning to change. The Newcastle game and the last-minute gift to Wigan aside, Wes Brown has been commanding, classy and solid at centre-back, while Jack Colback, who scored his first goal for the club against Everton on Boxing Day – albeit with the help of a significant deflection off Sylvain Distin – is calm and composed in possession.
It may be that he, David Vaughan and Lee Cattermole are too similar – tidy rather than explosive or imaginative – to be truly effective together, but Colback is further evidence of a productive academy. Jordan Henderson and Martyn Waghorn have already brought the club £19m in transfer fees, while the centre-forward Ryan Noble, the midfield creator Billy Knott and the left-back Blair Adams were all part of England's squad for the Under-20 World Cup last summer.
[h=2]Cole may be on the wane[/h]Amid all the discussions of what's gone wrong for Chelsea this season, all the talk of high lines and the suitability of André Villas-Boas's approach, one component of an unusually rickety back four has escaped the worst blame. That's particularly odd, because in recent years Ashley Cole has had an awful press, at least for his off-field behaviour and his attitude to referees. On-field, though, the perception seems to be that Cole remains a certainty to start both for Chelsea and for England.
In fairness, he probably is still England's best left-back, but the days when he was one of the top two or three full-backs in the world have gone. It was noticeable against Arsenal how much space he gave Theo Walcott – a function of the lack of protection offered by a midfield that pressed high and, presumably, of his concern about Walcott's pace. In days gone by, Cole was as quick as anybody, but at 31 he is perhaps just starting to feel the debilitating effects of age. That's natural, of course, and plenty of players before him have managed to adapt their games to their physical limitations.
The concern from Monday's game, though, was the half-hearted leg-wag Cole offered as Bryan Ruiz turned past him to cross for Clint Dempsey's equaliser for Fulham. It was the challenge of a man who was either exhausted, or didn't much care, either of which explanations is a worry for both Chelsea and England.
