On this day, 54 years ago, Kenya became independent amid colourful scenes of excitement and tumultuous rejoicing at Uhuru Gardens, Nairobi, where a crowd estimated at 250,000 people had gathered for the great event.
Kenya's new flag was hoisted as the new National Anthem was played. This was followed by a magnificent display of fireworks. The midnight event also involved traditional dancing, trooping of the colours and marching military bands.
