The turritopsis nutricula species of jellyfish may be the only animal in the world to have truly discovered the fountain of youth.
Since it is capable of cycling from a mature adult stage to an immature polyp stage and back again, there may be no natural limit to its life span. Scientists say the hydrozoan jellyfish is the only known animal that can repeatedly turn back the hands of time and revert to its polyp state (its first stage of life).
The key lies in a process called transdifferentiation, where one type of cell is transformed into another type of cell. Some animals can undergo limited transdifferentiation and regenerate organs, such as salamanders, which can regrow limbs. Turritopsi nutricula, on the other hand, can regenerate its entire body over and over again. Researchers are studying the jellyfish to discover how it is able to reverse its aging process.
Because they are able to bypass death, the number of individuals is spiking. They're now found in oceans around the globe rather than just in their native Caribbean waters. "We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion," says Dr. Maria Miglietta of the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute.

Interesting,

I bet utaambiwa kutokana na cellular structure kitu hiki hakiwezi hata kuotwa kufanyika kwa binadamu.

Kiranga,
I was just thinking the opposite. That if we could find a way for the human body to reverse its aging process.......

Dah!I am having a terrible headache just trying to wrap my head around this.
So,if this is successful (as many would hope) who would want to be old enough...you know, take responsibilities, make babies,be the old guy who tells weird stories and such?

Kiranga does that has anything to do with evolution?

I bet the cosmetics industry will quickly lap up this new discovery.

Drug stores and supermarket shelves are lined with countless anti-aging products, this will be sure to make a hit

You bet, the very resilient and self rejuvenating nature of this creature is a signature of evolution. Every living thing evolves.

Scientists are still working on trying to use get stem cells (as you knw what stem cell is)to replaced human body part damaged by diseases, this will help to cure uncurable diseases such as cancer, then this will mean no aging no dying from diseases

Economist won't like the success of this.

THEN,what next? no aging,no dying-what happens to the surplus population-the earth will then sink to oblivion under the weight of human masses

This is why I said Economist wont like this, just think of the nightmare this will mean to Social Security services. Unless the population can remain productive and colonize some other habitable planets.

My thing is, nothing is immortal. The second law of thermodynamics prevents that. This is just another sad case of overdramatization in the name of science popularization. So much for dramatic license.

I bet an actual scientific study's findings printed in a respectable scientific Journal like "Nature" or "Science" would never use the world "immortal".

Everything breaks down, even the universe itself will break down in a white death or big crunch. It is the natural progression of things. So to tell us that this thing is immortal is dishonest, not if you take the word immortal to mean what it really does.

I mean can this sucker survive the heart of a volcanic inferno?

This will be against nature and the will of God.

Labda uongee hiyo "against nature" ambayo mimi nina i interpret kama "against entropy and the second law of thermodynamics".

Lakini hizo habari za mungu ni hogwash. Mungu - in nthe traditional Judeo-Christian/ personal god way- hayupo na wala hajawahi kuwepo.

Kwa hiyo hata swala la kumtumikia linakuwa moot, unless you want to create a false idol to uphold your sense of morality, which is ironically kinda immoral.
