Not economic class, not religious beliefs, not shared values, not shared goals, and not shared interests.
The Republican Party is united by hatred-for the Democratic Party, for liberals and progressives, for gay people and single women and Latinos and black Americans and non-Christian religions and liberal Christians and moderate Christians and secular, agnostic, and atheist Americans.
There is nothing intellectually coherent, nor socially empathetic about what the Republican Party stands for these days. Bias, fear, anger, prejudice, and most of all, hatred is what makes their "coalition" of fundamentalist right-wing Christians (of many different theological backgrounds, actually), big businessmen, some cranky old retirees, corporate management types, Wall Street raiders, and right-wing authoritarians of all shapes and sizes have any sense of coherence or clarity.
Hatred is the way in which they turn out "the base." Hatred is the key to Tea Party primary victories. Hatred is the reason why evangelical right-wing Protestants can vote for a ticket with a Mormon and a Catholic on it.
So let's not compromise with these people anymore. They have proven themselves completely unwilling to negotiate in good faith, or negotiate at all. They won't stand up to Rush Limbaugh or Ann Coulter or Glenn Beck or whichever asshole with a microphone and a talk show that stokes their hatred bone the most.
Let's move forward with America, rather than moving backward for the sake of hateful people.
