Saif al-Islam - the son of slain ex-Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi - says he is innocent of crimes against humanity, an international prosecutor has said.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said talks with Saif al-Islam had been held through intermediaries.
The ICC says Gaddafi's son, accused of crimes during the recent conflict in Libya, would get a fair trial.
Saif al-Islam, aged 39, has been in hiding for months.
Recent reports claimed the man, who had once been the presumed successor to his father, was in a convoy heading toward Libya's desert border with Niger, where other Gaddafi allies have fled.
But those reports have not been confirmed, and the ICC says it does not know where he is.
Prosecutor's fears Mr Moreno-Ocampo told Reuters that the contacts with Saif al-Islam were through intermediaries, without revealing their identity.
"There are some people connected with him that in touch with people connected with us, so we have no direct relation," the prosecutor said.

  • Indirect co-perpetrator of murder and persecution as crimes against humanity
  • Between 15 February and 28 February, Gaddafi security forces carried out systematic attacks against civilians
  • Saif al-Islam "assumed essential tasks" to make sure plan worked

He added: "But we trust very much the person who is in touch for our side. He says he (Saif al-Islam) is innocent, he will prove he is innocent, and then he is interested in the consequence after that."
Mr Moreno-Ocampo earlier expressed fears that Saif al-Islam might decide against surrendering to the ICC and try to escape to a friendly country with the help of mercenaries.
The ICC denies that any kind of deal is being arranged with Saif al-Islam, stressing that the goal of the talks is to ensure an arrest warrant is carried out.
An ICC arrest warrant issued for Saif al-Islam in June accuses him of murder and persecution.
The document claims that he played an essential part in systematic attacks on civilians in various Libyan cities carried out by Gaddafi's security forces in February.
Mr Moreno-Ocampo said the ICC had learnt "through informal channels" that mercenaries were offering to move Saif al-Islam to a country that has not signed up to the ICC's Rome statute.
Reports say Zimbabwe is a likely final destination for Saif al-Islam if he chooses to flee from the ICC.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was a long-time ally of Muammar Gaddafi.
ICC difficulties The ICC has no police force of its own, but member countries are legally bound to enforce its warrants.

Sir Geoffrey Nice QC: "What happens to Saif al-Islam shouldn't really be subject to behind-the-scenes deals"

However, the credibility of the court has been called into question in recent years in Africa.
Many of the continent's governments have argued that the ICC disproportionately focuses on crimes in their countries.
Those claims have led the African Union to advise its members that they should no longer feel bound by the ICC's rules.
Member countries including Malawi, Chad and Kenya have all defied the court by failing to arrest Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who has a long-standing arrest warrant against him.
The warrant issued against Saif al-Islam came alongside warrants for intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanussi, who is still believed to be on the run, and Muammar Gaddafi.
The former Libyan leader, who was deposed in August after six months of civil conflict, died from gunshot wounds last week after fierce fighting in the city of Sirte.
The National Transitional Council (NTC) is now overseeing political reform intended to lead to national elections within eight months.

[h=2]Fate of Gadhafi's 8 children, what happens?[/h]

With their father's death confirmed Thursday, what has become of Moammar Gadhafi's eight children?Conflicting reports on the fates of Gadhafi's seven sons and one daughter, Aisha, have emerged at various points over the last months of conflict. Libya's transition forces have claimed at various points since the fall of Tripoli in August to have captured or killed some of Gadhafi's sons only for them later to reappear.
But according to the latest information, four of Gadhafi's children appear to be living in exile--two sons and his one daughter Aisha in Algeria, and one son in Niger. Three of Gadhafi's sons appear to be dead.
The fate of Gadhafi's most well-known son and onetime presumed heir apparent, Seif al-Islam, appears to be a mystery. There were unconfirmed reports from Libya's transition forces Friday that they had captured Seif al-Islam.
U.S. diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks this year describe bitter rivalries among Gadhafi's children, particularly between Seif al-Islam against his siblings. "A series of events since last summer suggest that tension between various children of Muammar al-Qadhafi has increased, and that heir-apparent Saif al-Islam is arrayed against Muatassim, Aisha, Hannibal, Saadi and perhaps even his own mother," Gene Cretz, the American ambassador to Libya, wrote in a 2009 cable. "Much of the tension appears to stem from resentment of Saif al-Islam's high-profile as the public face of the regime; however, deeper tension about contradictions between Saif al-Islam's proposed political-economic reforms, which would hurt his siblings' economic interests, and the old school manner by which he has tried to monopolize the most lucrative economic sectors, also play an important role. ... While internecine strife is nothing new for the famously fractious al-Qadhafi family, the recent escalation of tension comes during a particularly momentous period."
Exile
The Algerian foreign ministry confirmed in August that a convoy carrying one of Gadhafi's wives and three of her children--sons Hannibal and Mohammad and her pregnant daughter Aisha--had entered the country. Aisha, a French-trained trained lawyer, had once served on the defense team for another Middle Eastern strongman, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who met a violent end similar to her father's.
The African nation of Niger said in September that it had granted refuge to Gadhafi's soccer-playing son Saadi, a playboy whose bisexual affairs were described in redacted U.S. diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks as a source of intense distress for his father.
Dead
Three of Gadhafi's sons--Mo'tassim, Khamis and Saif al-Arab--are believed to have died in the last seven months of upheaval.
Gadhafi's son Saif al-Arab was reportedly killed in a NATO air strike on his compound in May that also reportedly killed some of his children. He had previously worked as a businessman in Germany. "The spoilt son of an indulgent father, he studied in Germany and was reported to have been involved in a fight at a Munich nightclub with a bouncer who tried to throw out his female companion after she began to undress on the dance floor," Reuters reported.
Gadhafi's son Khamis was reportedly killed on Aug. 29 in "fighting southeast of Tripoli," Reuters reported, citing confirmation from a pro-Gadhafi Syrian media outlet.
Gadhafi's son Mo'tassim was apparently killed this week in fighting near his father's ancestral home of Sirte, Reuters reported.
Mo'tassim's "body, naked from the waist up, went on display in the city of Misrata," where "local people jostled around the corpse ... to take pictures on their cell phones," Reuters reported.
Unknown
And what's become of Seif al-Islam, the London School of Economics-educated son who courted the Ivy League and Washington think tanks?
Seif al-Islam no doubt remains a top target of Libya's transitional fighters.
"A senior official of the National Transitional Council (NTC) said on Friday that [Seif al-Islam] was fleeing south from the last Gaddafi stronghold of Sirte toward Libya's border with Niger, where another son has already taken refuge," Reuters reported. "Al Arabiya TV quoted NTC officials as saying Saif al-Islam had been captured near Misrata but this was unconfirmed."

[h=1]Zuma and Malema: The bromance is over -- here's why[/h].Libya
This was the big one. Malema spent a chunk of his speech taking issue with the government, and hence the ANC's, stance on Nato's intervention in Libya. Malema did a good job of characterising Gaddafi as an innocent victim of the "blood and oil thirsty imperialist scavengers". He went on to slam Zuma's leadership indirectly, saying: "The inability of our government to detect the imperialist intentions of the US and the EU in Libya is not forgiveable, because it has diminished the respect the ANC enjoys amongst the progressive forces of the world."

While Zuma was his usual diplomatic self on other points where he disagreed, he was quite vehement on this matter: In what appeared to be a departure from his speech he outlined the history of events in Libya, from the democratic uprisings in the Arab world and how that had led to peaceful protests, to how these peaceful protests had led to an unelected leader killing his own people.

"Now many may not know," he began his brief history -- in a clear reference to an earlier point: The lack of political education and knowledge in the league.

In his clearest censure of Gaddafi to date, Zuma noted that "there was a military coup in Libya that was termed by its leader as a revolution" and there was no parliament or cabinet in the country.

And then he cut to the heart of Malema's criticism: the accusation that the ANC was equivocating in its attitude towards Libya, and interfering with a sovereign state. "We did not do something outside of the policies that the ANC stands for. We believe in human rights and we will not allow an African country to kill its people, even if it belongs to this continent," he said and added, in his sternest moment in the speech: "I thought I would explain this as it concerns you and I did hear your statements, but unfortunately you did not come and ask because we could have explained."But bravery will do Zuma little good at this point. The real question remains: With the ANC blatantly throwing its weight behind Malema's contender, Lebogang Maile, how did the latter do so badly in an election that is guaranteed to go in Malema's favour? The league may be the kingmakers of the mother body, but it has become clear that this power does not work both ways.
