"Hundreds, possibly thousands, of people were killed by state security forces. As Tanzanians died in the streets, Mrs Samia claimed a ridiculous 98% of the vote.

Dan Paget, a British academic specialising in the country, reckons the last time mainland Tanzania experienced such brutality was under German colonial rule more than a century ago."
