Tanzania Internet users hit 58.9 Million equivalent to a 19.5% increase

Internet users in Tanzania have continued to rise, reflecting the rapid growth of the country’s communications and information technology sector, with new data showing a significant increase in the use of various services over the past year.

Presenting the ministry’s 2026/27 budget in Parliament in Dodoma on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Minister Angellah Kairuki said number of internet users rose from 49.3 million to 58.9 million over the same period, equivalent to a 19.5 percent increase while the number of registered SIM cards grew from 90.4 million in March 2025 to 111.9 million in March 2026, marking an increase of 23.8 percent.

In mobile money services, users increased from 66.5 million to 81.0 million, representing a 21.8 percent rise and highlighting the growing role of these services in the digital economy.

Beyond user growth, the sector has also seen an expansion in service providers, with the number of communications infrastructure providers reaching 52 in March 2026, up from 38 in March 2025, an increase of 36.8 percent.

Additionally, application and value-added service providers rose from 136 to 173 during the same period, marking a 27.2 percent increase.
