Position: Superintendent – OHS Operations

Responsibilities
  • Develop competency and capability to ensure a skilled workforce is developed for Operations roles. Identify training requirements, develop and schedule training needs, monitor and maintain training records for the workforce.
  • Development and implementation of safety systems, procedures, standards and initiatives in order to establish high operating and performance standards in the Mine.
  • Identify improvement opportunities in work processes to reduce risk exposures to personnel. Implement value adding initiatives through structured change management processes.
  • Ensure all site incidents, investments, workplace injuries and related documentation are managed and completed in line with existing standards and procedures.
  • Ensure site compliance to company and site standards, relevant local and national legislation.
  • Develop and implement site induction processes for Barrick personnel and visitors.
  • Implement and manage Barrick work area inspection and task observation programs
  • Develop the knowledge, skills and abilities of employees and associated personnel in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Provide support and assistance to the site for the resolution of safety and environmental issues and champion the consistent promotion of organizational policies, procedures and objectives and comply with organization safety reporting standards.
  • Ensure compliance to leading indicators and execution of required leadership interaction with departments.
  • Continuously improve the safety and training culture of the site.
  • Ensure site associated personnel receive training and assessments that meet the competency requirements of North Mara systems.
  • Deliver compliance to training plan / schedules in collaboration with line management.
  • Facilitate the awareness of mining safe working procedure to all team in the Barrick Operation.
  • Complete on the job follow up and field assessments as per the Safety, Environmental, Quality and Training Management Plan. Develop and communicate the Annual Safety Management Plan and advise the develop budgets to ensure Safety objectives can be met
  • Implementing and auditing Safety program which includes i.e., Identifying the hazards to safety to which employees may be exposed and by assessing the risk implement the necessary controls/training to ensure that the risk is eliminated / managed. This includes all mine production areas, support services, maintenance workshops, process plant, and new civil construction projects.
  • Periodical review of the major hazards identified, risks assessed, to determine whether further measures are required to manage the risk.
  • To consult with legislative bodies, assist National advisory bodies, and get the different agencies to come to site for Audits.
  • Ensure that detailed accident investigations are conducted and that the appropriate remedial actions are instituted in compliance with statutory legislation. Co-ordinate the facilitation of, and participate in, Taproot investigations as required to ensure that a high quality of investigation and outcomes is achieved.
  • Ensure the courageous leadership and visible leadership programs are implemented and maintained
  • Ensure ER capability for major risks on the mine site
  • Ensure that adequate safety training has been given and that all employees are competent to perform their assigned duties. To conduct regular audits of Training given to employees
  • Hazard identification systems and training on identified risks
  • Continue with the introduction and training on the Barrick OHS systems
  • Advise line managers on best practice Safety
  • Manage and develop section staff and produce development plans for key successional positions
  • Ensure monthly report and Safety KPI’s are correct and reported in a timely manner to meet Barrick’s requirements.
  • Design, implement and monitor effective safety programs/systems using own initiative and knowledge.
  • Keep abreast of any new methods, trends and technological developments pertaining to safety, and upgrade current systems/programs used on the mine.
  • Advise Management, Supervisors and Health and Safety Committees on the development and implementation of the various aspects of safety programs / systems and any other matters pertaining to the safety of workers.
  • Conduct studies and projects aimed at reducing risks or losses.
  • Assist the Trainers with the design of training programs to ensure an appropriate and effective safety component.
  • Present safety training programs to the workforce and management.
  • Conduct appropriate on –the- job training and coaching and give guidance, during visits to all working areas of North Mara.
  • Identify safety and training needs during work area visits using own training knowledge and advise on the upgrading of training programs and courses to ensure that all employees are properly trained to perform their tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Monitor and follow up on all safety related issues, to ensure agreed action is completed.
  • Include an emergency evacuation strategy of the refinery in the Crisis Emergency response Plan.
  • The emergency evacuation plan is to be revised when changes are made to the gold room and or annually. Provides training to all employees/ contractors on the correct usage of fire hydrants, hoses and extinguishers.
  • Inspects and ensures the safe aircraft movement during landing and take-off following established safety procedures.
  • Conduct traffic speed testing and driver compliance to North Mara traffic rules.
  • Fills and maintains breathing apparatus (SCBA) cylinders according to established procedures.
  • Undertakes routine maintenance of specialised rescue equipment i.e., cutting/spreading equipment, hydraulic pump and air compressor when required.
  • Advises employee dependants on home safety, road safety and fire awareness on an ad hoc basis as instructed.
  • Performs standby duties / instructions as stipulated by OHS Manager.
  • Council employees in the event of transgressions of established safety rules and regulations.
  • Attends all Emergency Response Team practices and callouts.
  • Undertakes routine maintenance of all fire extinguishing equipment i.e., fire hydrants, hoses and fire extinguishers.
  • Record monthly safety statistics.
  • Implement safety competitions.
  • Include an emergency evacuation strategy of the refinery in the Crisis Emergency response Plan.

Qualification requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree of Science/Advanced Diploma with Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Modules (Mandatory)
  • Certificate IV or Diploma in OHS similar Qualification in Workplace Training & Assessment.
  • NOSHC I and II
  • Qualification in Safety and Health / Risk Management
  • Sound knowledge of technical area operations in Mining.
  • Qualified to operate all equipment for which training is conducted
Experience and competencies needed
  • Minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience in a mining operation
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in safety and training
  • 5 years’ experience in technical area of mining operations
  • Experience working in multi-cultural orientations
  • Demonstrated skills with capital justification, budget development, expenditure, and controls.
  • Experience in systematic coaching and training of employees is essential.
  • Must have excellent written and spoken communication skills in the English language.
  • Able to Drive Manual Transmission/Stick Shift Transmission.
