The oil company Royal Dutch Shell says the financial and environmental damage caused by oil theft in the Niger Delta region is out of control. In a report published by This Day, Shell hits back at critics accusing it of lax safety regulations, saying it has had only 36 operational spills in 2012 - a 40 percent decrease from the previous year. In contrast, Shell says there were over 137 spills in the same period due to sabotage from oil theft, resulting in the loss of more than 33,000 tonnes of crude oil. It also said that the resulting environmental damage is huge. The Premium Times reports that authorities have cracked down on illegal refineries: during an early April raid, nearly 40 illegal refineries were destroyed.
