Plastic bags are containers made up high density polyethylene. Most of us we are familiar with these bags because we use them to carry goods purchased in the shops.
In Tanzania plastic bags are highly consumed every day, for example in the city such as Dar es salaam plastic bags are used in most of trade activities from super markets to small shops. But majority of the people seems unaware of the problems caused with plastic bags,
First it's good for us Tanzanians to understand that plastic bags are the big enemy to our environment, Scientist have proved that plastic bags can last for number of years without being decomposed. In most of our communities we can witness the mass spread of the plastic bags with less attention to them, it reach a point were people feel like it's just a normal thing to our environment this come as the result that people put much emphasize on the cycling of the plastic bottle and neglecting the plastic bags.
I call up on Tanzania government to make policies that discourage the uncontrolled use of the plastic bags because they highly increase on damping our environment. In most of Tanzania urban areas it's quite open to see the wide spread of the plastics that are blowing everywhere with wind.
We can also learn from other African countries such as Seychelles where the use of plastic bags is highly discourage of which if someone goes to a super market he or she should provide his container otherwise plastic bags are paid separately, this is not actually a solution but we can take it as a first step ahead on our campaign.
People should also be given environmental education, as we all know that information is power; Hence Tanzania government should initiate various strategies to make sure that people feel the patriotism to our environment, for example college student we can be used as environmental volunteers to work with our communities to influence the people to use paper bags instead of plastic bags by debating with them the problems of plastic bags to our country.
I witness that in my college there is a poor mechanism of recycling the plastic bags, first plastic bags are mostly used every day by students to carry food take away, but soon after the consumption you can find the plastic bags loosely in our environment.
For this reason I call up on Tanzania government under the Ministry of Trade and Ministry of Environment to make sure that our country transform from the use of plastic bags to paper bags by ensuring that much investment is put and emphasized on the producers of paper bags for example at Kipawa in Ilala district near to Korie and Apha Fish Processors there is a small group of people producing papers bags with a low capital, due to that we can see that even in our societies some people care for the environment by using most of their day time to produce friendly products to our environment.
I call up on Tanzania government and group of investors to look the potential of these people by ensuring that their contribution is being seen and appreciated by transforming their small investment into a big firm.
