Relatives of the late Daudi Ballali are crying foul over the death of the former Bank of Tanzania (BoT) governor.
However, a prominent city lawyer and Musoma rural MP, Mr Nimrod Mkono, is blaming the press for driving him out of the country.
Mr Ballali's younger brother, who spoke to The Citizen yesterday in Dar es Salaam, said the family received the news with shock as they had been assured of his steady recovery.
I'm crying for my beloved brother who has been killed, but God knows, he said while confirming that the Dar es Salaam relatives were informed about the death on Monday.
He blamed local authorities, saying Mr Ballali's involvement in government business was to blame for his early demise.
The relative, who preferred to remain anonymous, said his brother has suffered bad fate to allegedly safeguard selfish interests of those in positions of authority.
He, however, could not give clear reasons why he felt the government was to blame for Mr Ballali's death.
He suggested that, just as it has been widely rumored since the former governor went to hospital, he could have been poisoned to hide information about the massive Sh133 billion External Payments Arrears Account (EPA) and other scandals at BoT.
He said his brother would have strived to clear his name against the various corruption allegations directed at him. He was confident he would clear his name of accusations leveled against him before the public.
Yesterday Mr Ballali's successor at the BoT, Prof Beno Ndulu, issued a statement confirming the death of the former governor. The statement revealed that Mr Ballali died on Friday in Boston, USA.
The bank received the sad information on Tuesday night.
We at the bank join the late Mr Ballali's family in mourning his death and pray to God that his soul may rest in eternal peace, Prof Ndulu said.
According to him, the deceased served the bank as its governor from 14th July, 1998 to 8th January, 2008.
The central bank was not able to explain what caused the death.
Mr Mkono, who was early in February reported by our sister paper, Mwananchi, to have visited Ballali at a hospital in Boston, said his death was sad.
He said if he was asked to blame anybody on it, he would mention the press for accelerating it.
If you shout on a thief and he starts running, and at the end gets beaten to death, we won't blame those who killed him, but the ones who shouted that he was a thief, he said.
He said the media has been shouting on several scams from BoT which might have caused his death.
