Members of Uganda's 12th Parliament have been urged to embrace artificial intelligence (AI) carefully as Parliament continues to digitise its work.

Speaking during the induction of the new Parliament, Joseph Munyangabo from the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) said AI is changing the way information is created, shared and used, and will increasingly shape how public institutions operate.

He said AI can make Parliament's work faster and more efficient by helping MPs and staff with research, drafting laws, committee work, managing records, engaging the public and strengthening oversight of government.

However, Munyangabo warned that AI also comes with risks. These include protecting sensitive information, preventing cyberattacks, safeguarding people's privacy and ensuring Parliament remains independent and trustworthy.

He stressed that as Parliament adopts AI, it must do so in a safe, responsible and ethical way.

To support this, Munyangabo said the Westminster Foundation for Democracy has been working with Parliament's technical teams to develop guidelines for the safe and responsible use of AI as part of Parliament's digital transformation.

His remarks highlight the growing importance of ensuring that new technology improves Parliament's work while protecting the institution, its staff and the public from potential risks.
