Former Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea District Woman Representative Anita Among on Tuesday attended a parliamentary plenary session virtually via Zoom, marking her first appearance in 83 days since she was placed under house arrest.

The sitting was chaired by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa. Although Among did not take part in the debate, her virtual attendance is significant as it counts toward Parliament's attendance requirements.

Under Article 83(1)(d) of the Constitution and Parliament's Rules of Procedure, an MP who misses 15 consecutive sittings without written permission from the Speaker or without providing a satisfactory explanation to the relevant parliamentary committee risks losing their parliamentary seat.

Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige recently reminded legislators of this requirement during the orientation of the 12th Parliament.

Among was replaced as Speaker after Jacob Oboth-Oboth was endorsed by both the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) for the position.

She has been out of the public eye since anti-corruption investigators placed her under house arrest as part of investigations into allegations of corruption, abuse of office, illicit enrichment, and abuse of authority.

During the operation, investigators searched several of her properties in Kampala and Bukedea and impounded a number of vehicles and documents believed to be relevant to the inquiry.
Tuesday's virtual appearance marks her first participation in Parliament since the investigations began and effectively ends an 83-day absence from plenary sittings.
