Members of Uganda's 12th Parliament have been urged to protect the image and credibility of Parliament by communicating responsibly, verifying facts before making public statements, and maintaining professionalism in all media engagements.
The message was delivered by Grace Gidudu, Assistant Director of Communication and Public Affairs, during the ongoing induction seminar for Members of Parliament. She cautioned legislators against commenting on issues without first confirming the accuracy of the information, warning that misinformation could damage both their personal reputations and the institution they represent.
Gidudu also advised MPs to remain calm and ethical during interviews, debates, and other public appearances, noting that emotional outbursts or unprofessional conduct on live broadcasts could negatively affect public perception of Parliament.
She further encouraged legislators to strengthen their digital presence by developing clear social media strategies to engage effectively with constituents. In addition, she urged MPs to build positive working relationships with journalists, particularly members of the Uganda Parliamentary Press Association, saying such relationships can promote accurate reporting and prove valuable during challenging situations.
The guidance forms part of Parliament's induction programme, which is equipping both new and returning MPs with knowledge on their legislative responsibilities, ethical conduct, oversight functions, and public communication to strengthen accountability and public trust.
