At least 20 senior officers of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) have been arrested over the past two years in a sweeping anti-corruption crackdown since Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba took over as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

Gen Kainerugaba, who recently marked two years in office as head of the army, has overseen a series of arrests targeting senior military officers accused of corruption, treason, and misconduct. The arrested officers are reportedly being held at Makindye Military Barracks in Kampala and Kasenyi Barracks in Entebbe on orders of the CDF.

Among the recent arrests are Maj Gen Don William Nabaasa and Brig Johnson Namanya Abaho, who were arrested over alleged corruption-related offences. The arrest orders were reportedly implemented by the Chief Inspector of Armed Forces, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, who also serves as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces.

Another high-profile arrest involved former Chief of Military Intelligence Maj Gen James Birungi, who was arrested over allegations including treason, corruption, and mishandling intelligence operations. His arrest followed findings from a board of inquiry chaired by Lt Gen Okiding, which reportedly uncovered serious lapses in the military intelligence directorate, including falsified reports, misuse of resources and operational misconduct.

Investigations are also reportedly focusing on the UPDF Logistics Department, where officers are accused of engaging in fraudulent schemes involving phantom supplies, inflated procurement budgets, kickbacks and delivery of substandard equipment and supplies.

The arrests are part of what military sources describe as a broader effort by Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to fight corruption and restore discipline and accountability within the Uganda People's Defence Forces.
