The 57-year-old chat show host cried as she listened to a speech about the progress of race relations in the country before accepting her award from the University of Bloemfontein.
Wearing an bright red and blue traditional graduation cap and gown, Oprah sat in the audience and listened throughout the ceremony which was arranges specifically to honour the American star.

A 4,500-seat auditorium was full for Winfrey's ceremony.
Tickets were sold for 10 rand (about $1), most of that covering computer sales processing fees. Local reporters said hawkers selling fake tickets on Bloemfontein streets didn't increase the price.
In a passage that drew cheers from the audience Friday, the citation accompanying the honorary doctorate, the 152nd awarded by the university, said Oprah: 'has truly become a South African.'
Oprah herself cheered and threw her arms in the air thanking the crowd as she walked back to her seat after the presentation.
It was clearly a proud moment for the veteran TV host, who never got a degree after leaving high school at 17.

Her school's first class just graduated, overcoming early setbacks that included a scandal over a dormitory supervisor accused of trying to kiss and fondle students.
The supervisor was acquitted of sexual assault charges last year.
