'One in 4 Israelis Lives Under Poverty Line'

Israeli protesters demonstrate in Tel Aviv on September 3, 2011

Israel's National Insurance Institute says one in every four Israelis lives under the poverty line and unemployment rate is on the rise in the regime.

According to the annual poverty report published by the Israeli institute, 2011 has been a year of crisis for Israelis.

The Arab residents across the occupied Palestinian land are the poorest population group.

The report was released amid massive demonstrations against social injustice in Israel.

Protests erupted in Israel in mid-July as activists began setting up tents in Tel Aviv to protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's economic and social policies.

On Wednesday, Israeli police clashed with demonstrators who staged mass rallies to protest the high cost of living. The police arrested about 40 protesters in Tel Aviv.

Israeli demonstrators are also opposed to illegal settlement expansions in the occupied Palestinian territories.
