Odinga meets Museveni as storm brews over Juba oil

Last week, presidents Salva Kiir Mayardit and Mwai Emilio Kibaki and Prime Minister Meles Zenawi took themselves off to Lamu in order to launch the Lamu mega port project estimated to cost more than $24b.
Apart from the port itself, the Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPPSET) project includes 1,600 kilometers of modern railways, 1,700 kilometers of new highways and three international airports.

I think when you analyze the geopolitical jigsaw, you will note that the newly minted state of South Sudan is seeking an immediate escape from Khartoum. Ethiopia has been the US's constable for a very Long time. Bob Geldof who recently raised $200m for an Africa Fund said this: "Do we leave this vast continent, with all the resources we will ever need, do we leave it to China?

I think there has been a epiphany in the minds of the US and European governments and that they are seeking to roll back China in Africa. Recall that China was essentially expelled out of Libya last year.Keep an eye on who ponies up the cash. Japan [The US's trusted and faithful ally] might well be one of the first to write a big cheque.

In essence, this will be a transformative project with the potential to add at least three percentage points to GDP for ourselves, Sudan and Ethiopia. Its a potential break out trade. It will ignite growth in the region.

A Khan.

..Waswahili husema "mtegemea cha nduguye hufa masikini."

..We have Uranium,Iron Ore,Gold,Titanium,Natural Gas, and many more. Kwanini tanahangaika na East African Community?

..Tanzania already has an oil pipeline and railway going to Zambia.

..we had an oil refinery that has been mismanaged and is no longer operational.

..If Tanzania is to develop then we should initiate projects with Tanzanians as the primary targets.

..I don't believe in building a railway line or any other infrastructures to serve Ugandan, Rwandan,Burundi, or DRC interests. We have already learned how TAZARA was negatively affected by the fall in copper production in Zambia.

..Tujenge kwa ajili ya Watanzania kwanza, majirani zetu watakuja wenyewe ikiwa wataona wanahitaji services zetu.

Please, enlighten us! What businesses and how are they affected by the port? I am all ears!

Lol, the message above is like a sad break up letter. This trail of self pitty is tragically pathetic. Now you feel neglected by Kenya? ('I Will Always Love You - Whitney Huston playing in the background) LOL! Come on now! How in the world does the construction of a transport corridor linking Kenya, Ethiopia and SS make you this mad? It is not like we are closing the border and uprooting the Kenya-Uganda railway! You are a slobbering mess, we will stop be friends LOL, calm down. Don't you dare conjure up a suicide note!

It might be in the same way building an airport on Kenyan territory by the Kenyan goverment, using Kenyan resources riled the Tanzanian government but I might be wrong. I am tempted to tell you to focus on building your country instead of complaining but I am really interested in hearing about those business and how they are affected based on your 'extensive' research.

I am all eyes & ears!

Interesting indeed......Complaining?I'm not complaining.

The problem is there are too many clueless nitwits patronizing this forum. I have met a lot of smart Kenyans and ugandans but unfortunately they don't show up here, and the quality of posting here from some of kenyans (ofcourse not all) is just pure ****. I have stopped wasting my time making any factual arguments because they don't appreciate that. All they are interested is grand posturing of we are better than you.

I hope they will appreciate the fact that every member country of EAC has trade laws despite EAC as Regional Entity. I have tasked them to go avail themselves of this information before they show up here to bash Tanzania. Whiles at it they can also have a look at Kenya's bad and bully-like trade behaviour towards Tanzania in recent times.Wakisikia Tanzania's Economy is booming wanapata fatigue, wanapata dizznes, wakiskia Tanzania's Economy is on the way to surpass kenya's Economy wanasikia dunia ina-crush.

Guys,Should we allow our own population to be impoverished because we love our neighbours who incidentally once killed each other because of Ethnocracy instead of democracy?Should we sacrifice our resources for some uncivilized chaps in the name of economic intergration?

We are doing what we think is right for ourselves. You feed yourself before you help someone weed their farm. On an airplane, they advice to put your own oxygen mask on first before attempting to help another person. Even mothers!!

I'm still reading through your myriad of rubbish.

So what is your answer? All I see is the well rehearsed lines with a sprinkle of 'you killed each other' and another poorly written tribute to your self pity but not an answer to my question.

  3. Lamu Port
  4. Nakuru International Airport
  5. Southern Bypass
  6. Isiolo International Airport
  7. Kisumu International Airport
  8. Wajir International Airport
  9. Isiolo resort City
  10. Konza City
  11. Menengai geothermal plant

You will make Tanzanians here die with jealousy..Kenya speaks with actions not just mere words! our destiny cannot be determined by circumstances..but we are shapers of our own destiny...and creators of our future with Almighty God help.We lead by example..

Indeed. With how Kenyans, all over the internet and in public discussions, are proclaiming themselves as the "real Giant of Africa" (never mind South Africa) and their nation as "the happening place in East Africa" it was terribly obvious that it wont be long before the Kenyan Government concludes myopically that its fellow East African nations , most especially Tanzania, now constitute a liability to the "ideological giant of Africa" .

Nothing spoil and Kenya is allowed to feel how it wants but life must still go on for the rest of us. To that effect Tanzania should do the classy thing and formally withdraw from EAC or modify the treaty instead of setting a catastrophic precedence, as an influential member State, that undermining the core ideals of EAC is an acceptable thing to do. East Africa is still fragile. It does not need trade wars and protectionism. Kenya is certainly allowed to conclude that she is going places right now and the rest of us are not and never will . To that extent kenya should formally cut its ties with the 'losers' and "leeches" that surrounds it as they have been claiming for so long.

This is not the way a young man should think at this age in time..brave yourself for competition bro..its survival for the fittest.Kenya is not bragging..we have spoken in actions..and its for our own good...whats bad to feel good about what we have achieved as a country honestly!?..you have a huge responsibility as a Tanzanian citizen to build the wonderful and blessed country God gave you..and this can not be done through complaining and looking for scapegoats everywhere..EAC is for its citizens not just govts..its upon individual EAC citizens to see how they can benefit from the huge market created by the unity of this 5 great countries plus S.Sudan.

If you really were reasonable, you would have searched and figured out by now that there are other EAC states affected by this move, and businesses owned by folks from those states

Before this project was launched..it ws marketed to EAC,SADC,and ECOWAS and they gave a their support...so whoever felt that he would be affected should have objected it earlier..Kenya saw an opportunity and it grabbed it..don't blame anybody here

God gave nothing to u greedy people! Tanzania is pity of her bros and srs in SS that Kenya is about to take them for granted (at the time they need a true neighbor) and import their crude and refine at Mombasa/Lamu and export back to SS or overseas! If this succeed it will be catastrophic to economic well-being of 8 mio. Southern Sudanese that their country heavily depends on their God given resource i.e. crude oil! For them to fully benefit of that resource they need to refine at home and use Lamu as a transit of their finished product i.e. petroleum or diesel or kerosene or LNG! I support Museveni's approach to wake up this greedy neighbors who nothing less of opportunists!

Hayo mafuta yatapitia asilimia kubwa Tanzania. Tukumbusha siku za soni, huo mradi wenu Kenya is just a white elephant project. Si unajua tayari Uganda imesaini kujenga reli na Tanzania na kuipanua bandari ya Tanga? subirini muone

I love this movie! Museveni is a smart chap and a true revolutionary...

This is what you call smartness on Musevenis part!! his move is an admission of failure..he thought to bypass Mombasa port for Dar..but Kibaki was the smartest...he gave Southern Sudan a better deal and brought in another partner Ethiopia.M7 feels inferior now.
The country that should be complaining now is Northern Sudan coz we have mercilessly denied them business forever!!.Museveni..now will be forced to use Kenya unwillingly to refine and export his oil and its products ,because of the infrastructural advantage Kenya has over Tanzania!.... the rail network will be used by electric trains(for us info)..from Lamu to juba and addis..but we will extend it to northern Uganda to give M7 more temptation.Museveni is screwed! he has no choice!!
But this does not discourage Uganda and Tanzania from going ahead with the rail network that was to be built....but u can have ua ties but let it not be coz of Kenya but for the mutual benefit of your two countries......enterprising Kenyans will be beneficiaries anyway....as things stands now Uganda is in our hand..we will decide her next move..and i don't think Museveni will go ahead with Tanzanian railway coz the Kenyan side is too juicy to be ignored
So Museveni was damn not smart..and there is nothing revolutionary in him economically

Mluga,

..hakuna haja ya Mtanzania kuwa na tamaa na rasilimali za Kenya,Uganda,Rwanda,Burundi, etc.

..nchi hii ina uranium, gold, titanium, coal, natural gas, iron ore, maziwa makubwa, mito mikubwa, the longest coast line etc etc.

..mimi nadhani EAC inatuchelewesha wa-Tanzania to think and plan for ourselves. internationalism haijawahi kuisaidia Tanzania toka enzi za Nyerere.

Moyo,

..what will prevent Southern Sudan frm building their own refinery 3 or 4 yrs from now?

..kunatakiwa kuwe na interests za East Africa, siyo interests za Kenya, or Uganda, or Tanzania.

You are very stupid and so ignorant! go get a book and re read your history!..Southern Sudan is literally Kenya's idea under president Moi who initiated the peace talks between the north and South Sudan in Machakos..and later the peace agreement was signed in Naivasha where south was to choose if it would be independent from the north or not after 5yrs!..I wish you had listened to President Salva Kirrs speech in Lamu and you wuld not be exposing your ignorance here..Southern Sudan is Kenyas 48th County..just look at their flag!? do you know what motivated them to adopt Kenyan flag!! go and read ! i have no time to waste on you..Tanzania has no capacity to do anything meaningful for herself leave alone the region!!..you dare call a project that includes 3 countries a white elephant!!? this is not aTanzanian project!!! you people will die of jealousy !! my advice go back to school and read!!....

Sourthern Sudan cannot because the Lamu refinery will be co-owned by the two countries..Kenya-S.Sudan...Experts say any good refinery should be near an ocean or a big water body..and SS cant use river nile coz of pollution..again how can they invest their own $4b real money and embark on another unnecessary expense!....we also expect Uganda to use it!

Let discuss in civilized manner, by the way hakuna mtanzania anyeitamani Kenya, ndo maana hata wewe umewafata watanzania hapa kwenye blog zao.

Moyo,

..I think if u go back and read what u wrote u might realize that u come across a little unpleasant.

..also don't u think calling South Sudan "Kenyas 48th county" is belittling what these ppl went thru' to achieve their statehood?

..then u claim that Tanzania can not do anything meaningful for herself or the region. If that is the case, why did Kenya and the rest find it fit that Tanzania is including in the EA community?

..kwa kweli kama attitude yako ni representative ya majority ya Wakenya, then some of us have every right to predict that the EAC has no future.

..

read what you will in Moyo's word but I think she was spot on. When I read South Sudan is Kenya's 48th county the implications are Kenya considers them to be our brothers and we have shared our land, resources and knowledge with them and we are pretty much one. Remember not only Kenya's 3rd largest tribe call South Sudan home but we have other Nilotic groups in both countries with the same language and customs that are only divided by a border.

Cynicism will only get you so far!

Unapoambiwa John Garang na wewe unasema President Moi, basi kijana hufahamu History.

Ningelikuona wa maana ungelisema President Kenyatta. I think you are still too young with Mom's smell around you.

Go back and learn when John Garang and Museven attended University of Dar es Salaam and military training in Tanzania.
