Last week, presidents Salva Kiir Mayardit and Mwai Emilio Kibaki and Prime Minister Meles Zenawi took themselves off to Lamu in order to launch the Lamu mega port project estimated to cost more than $24b.
Apart from the port itself, the Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPPSET) project includes 1,600 kilometers of modern railways, 1,700 kilometers of new highways and three international airports.
I think when you analyze the geopolitical jigsaw, you will note that the newly minted state of South Sudan is seeking an immediate escape from Khartoum. Ethiopia has been the US's constable for a very Long time. Bob Geldof who recently raised $200m for an Africa Fund said this: "Do we leave this vast continent, with all the resources we will ever need, do we leave it to China?
I think there has been a epiphany in the minds of the US and European governments and that they are seeking to roll back China in Africa. Recall that China was essentially expelled out of Libya last year.Keep an eye on who ponies up the cash. Japan [The US's trusted and faithful ally] might well be one of the first to write a big cheque.
In essence, this will be a transformative project with the potential to add at least three percentage points to GDP for ourselves, Sudan and Ethiopia. Its a potential break out trade. It will ignite growth in the region.
A Khan.
