The government has this Monday morning reopened the Namungoona–Bwaise section of the Kampala Northern Bypass to traffic after completing asphalt laying works, easing weeks of disruption on one of the capital’s busiest transport corridors.
The Ministry of Works and Transport said the resurfacing works had been completed 100%, allowing the road to reopen at 10:00 a.m. after the contractor removed machinery and equipment from the site.
“In a few days, the contractor will now proceed with road marking, which will be carried out with minimal or no disruption to traffic flow,” the ministry said in a statement.
Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama said the contractor had been instructed last week to complete the maintenance by Monday to ease persistent traffic congestion that had affected commuters using the bypass.
“I’m pleased that the asphalt laying has now been completed as directed, and the section will reopen to traffic this morning. Road marking will follow in the coming days with minimal disruption,” Byamukama said.
He thanked motorists and the public for their patience during the maintenance works, saying the project was aimed at restoring smoother and safer movement along the strategic corridor.
The Kampala Northern Bypass forms part of the city’s ring road network, linking major highways to western, northern and eastern Uganda while allowing through-traffic to avoid the congested city centre.
