91.2 Crooze FM published a post on its X (formerly Twitter) page reporting that the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmus Asiimwe, had directed all staff in schools under the diocese to either wed or resign their jobs with immediate effect. The post further stated that the directive applied to all employees, including gatekeepers, cooks and cleaners, and that only those who were wedded or single would be eligible for employment.
However, the North Kigezi Diocese had previously issued an official press release dated June 16, 2026, disputing the manner in which the bishop's remarks were being reported on.
According to the
diocesan statement, the bishop's sermon during the 42nd Anniversary celebrations of Kinyasano Girls Secondary School on June 14, 2026, focused on the need to uphold Christian moral standards in Church-founded schools.
The diocese clarified that Bishop Asiimwe's concern was
not directed at unmarried teachers in general, but specifically at teachers who are
cohabiting while serving in Church of Uganda-founded schools. It said his appeal was that such teachers should make intentional plans to have their marriages solemnized and sanctified in the Church so that they can serve as role models to learners.
The statement also says the bishop emphasized protecting students from the risks of sexual harassment and maintaining Christian values in Church-founded institutions.
