Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara has said no secondary school student in Masindi should be asked to pay more than Shs110,000 in school contributions, while primary school pupils should not pay more than Shs40,000.
Barugahara made the remarks while addressing students and residents at Masindi Secondary School in Masindi District during his anti-corruption inspection drive.
He said the amounts were agreed upon by the Masindi District Council and clarified that they are not school fees, since the government pays fees for learners under the relevant government programmes.
According to the minister, the contributions agreed upon by Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) are intended to support the salaries of teachers who are not on the government payroll and provide meals for learners who choose to eat at school.
Barugahara also said the government has paid registration fees for all candidates sitting Primary Seven, Senior Four and Senior Six examinations.
He made the clarification after students complained that they were being charged Shs40,000 for Senior Four registration.
The minister stressed that the contributions are not mandatory, and directed that no school administration should send a learner away or deny them examinations for failure to pay.
