Dauda Mbaya, ALLAFRICA: Maiduguri An Islamic scholar who was also a chairman of the Borno state deputy governor, Alhaji Adamu Shettima Dibal campaign organisation, Sheik Abdullahi Ibrahim Gommari was yesterday shot dead by suspected Boko Haram members in Maiduguri. An eye witness who does not want his name in print told our correspondent that at exactly 7:07 pm on Sunday, he was listening to his radio when he heard four gun shots, adding that when he rushed to the scene he saw the deceased in the pool of his blood. Our correspondent gathered that the gunmen came in a sport utility vehicle (SUV) one of them alighted from the vehicle, move closer to the victim and opened fire shooting him at closed range, the victim died instantly. When our correspondent visited the resident of the deceased, he saw the body of the late cleric being conveyed to the Gwange cemetery for burial amidst tight security and sympathisers accompanying the corpse. Confirming the incident to newsmen, the Borno state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Jinjiri Abubakar said he received a distress call that some people came in a sport utility vehicle and shot one Islamic cleric Mallam Ibrahim Gommari. The commissioner said although no arrest was made, the description of the vehicle would assist them in their investigations and appealed to the general public to be calm as the police is on top of the situation. Our correspondent also gathered that the late Islamic cleric received a threat massage through text message from some unknown persons threatening his life some months ago.
