Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan calls for Mike Ashley to bring in new faces at St James's Park

Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan hopes Mike Ashley's latest flying visit to Tyneside means there are new signings on their way.

Club owner Ashley and his managing director Derek Llambias flew by helicopter to the club's training ground on the outskirts of the city as Alan Pardew continued his preparations for Sunday's midday showdown at Sunderland.

The pair took in a training ground friendly against Hibernian, which allowed former Everton midfielder Dan Gosling a crucial run-out as his recovery from a long knee injury continues. They also met Pardew for talks and skipper Nolan hopes to see new additions at the club before the end of the month.

New blood: Nolan (left) wants to see Ashley spend the dough

Newcastle have been in talks with Birmingham's Sebastian Larsson, but have pulled out over his wage demands and Alex McLeish's valuation of the Sweden international who is out of contract in June. They have also been linked with moves for Shaun Wright-Phillips, Robbie Keane, Glenn Whelan and David Wheater.

Nolan said the shock FA Cup defeat at Stevenage last weekend was proof that Newcastle need an injection of fresh blood during the transfer window.

He said: 'If you are fresh, it always makes that bit of difference and it just shows we do need probably a couple more players and hopefully we will get them in January to help us out and get us over that finishing line at the end of the season.

'I think the genuine thing was that we had had a lot of games over the Christmas period and Stevenage hadn't and the rest was history, but fair play to them.

'Hopefully, talks between them are going to be good and hopefully we will be seeing a couple of new faces soon. In the next couple of days would be nice but even if it's in the next couple of weeks that would be perfect.'

Bad day at the office: Nolan trails Stevenage's Lawrie Wilson during the FA Cup humiliation at Broadhall Way

Gosling's appearance yesterday in a 3-3 draw increases the likelihood of his Newcastle debut on Wearside, six months after his controversial switch from Goodison.

The midfielder, who quit Everton on a free transfer while injured, hit the crossbar against the SPL side. With Cheik Tiote suspended and Jonas Gutierrez struggling to be fit, Gosling should start.

Pardew is refusing to rule out striker Andy Carroll, who has returned from his break in Dubai, but centre-back Steven Taylor is out with a hamstring pull.

Newcastle defender Jose Enrique is refusing to open talks on a new contract until the club guarantee their Barclays Premier League safety.

Fans' favourite: Enrique has become apopular figure since his move from Villarreal in 2007

Manager Alan Pardew says he is relaxed about Enrique’s unwillingness to commit his future beyond the 18 months left on his current deal, but there must be fears that Liverpool or Aston Villa will pounce if negotiations remain on hold.

The Spanish left back, who was in the squad relegated two years ago, has been outstanding this season but Pardew said: ‘Jose has made it quite clear to us that until
we’re safe he doesn’t want to open any discussions and we’re comfortable with that, it makes sense for us.’

Should Enrique, 25, stay at St James’ Park, Pardew insists he would have a great chance of being called up by World Cup winners Spain.

The Newcastle boss said: ‘Knowing Jose, it would be a big ambition of his to get in that Spain team and he’s in a great place in terms of profile. This is a big club and I don’t see any reason why he can’t get in the squad from this position.’

Newcastle travel to Birmingham tonight with Shefki Kuqi, who made his debut at Blackburn on Saturday, admitting his move to St James’ Park has made him ‘one of the happiest footballers in the world’.

He added: ‘There aren’t words to express how delighted I am.’

Huyu Enrique atakuwa ana yake sie tupo 6 points from safety anataka guarantee gani? Toons will not go down..

Much debate has been prompted by the supposedly accidental outburst from Anfield apologist Phil Thompson, regarding an agreement to sell Magpie defender Jose Enrique to Liverpool this coming summer.

While there's no shortage of folks claiming to have insider knowledge of what the red side of Merseyside are up to, our attempts to shed light on the story from a Tyneside perspective have failed to find anything worth reporting.

That's not to say there's no smoke without fire, but the people who are often first to know when deals are struck involving SJP are noticeably quiet at present.

PS: quoted in the local press on Wednesday, Alan Pardew responded to the Enrique/Liverpool claims by saying:
"There’s definitely no deal between the clubs – 100 per cent. He’s under contract here until next summer, and we hope to open talks on a new deal as soon as possible.
“That’s where we are. We want to keep our best players, and Jose’s one of them. As far as anything being a done deal, that’s not true.
“We want Jose to stay. Nothing’s changed.”

So that's that then - read my lips, he's not going - from the man who assured us that Andy Carroll was staying...
