Today NASA is continuing a 40-year tradition of Earth Observation systems watching the earth from space. Landsat 8 is launched aboard Atlas V Rocket. The Landsat mission is the longest continuous effort to image the earth, and it has endured many setback, failures and near cancellations to get to this moment. About few minutes ago the separation was a success and we look forward to receiving the first images from the Landsat 8 in the next 25 days. After retiring Landsat 5, Landsat 7 is the only one operating and the failure of the Landsat would have meant a serious setback. NASA in collaboration the United States Geological Survey (USGS) will as usual make images from Landsat 8 images available for free to the whole world on the internet. It's an opportunity for many folks in Tanzania to take advantages of the new images which we hope will be the most sophisticated for analysis in various fields.

Update: Solar arrays deployed successfully, everything looks good so far!!
