I went to UBT 3 days ago to escort my guest who was travelling upcountry by a 06.00 am. bus. The following is a brief description of what I saw and experienced:
1. Our commuter bus from Tabata dropped us off at a spot close to the Ubungo junction at about 05.00 hrs. where it was still dark but already crowded.
2. We had to take a perilous walk half a km to UBT in almost total darkness thanks to the vehicle headlights, but crossing the traffic lanes opposite the UBT was a nightmare for most travellers because of the several high curbs one has to cross while dodging sepeeding motorcycles everywhere!
3. If you miraculously arrive at UBT real hell begins there as you must somehow find where to buy your upcountry bus ticket in absolute chaos. The so called 'madalali' are blocking you and calling at the top of their voices, some even trying to grab you or your luggage to take you to their bus!
4. There are no direction signs or official guides, let alone the insufficient lighting to let you see which way to go!
5. Literally hundreds of buses are tightly parked (some in motion) with hardly any space to allow one to move to where their bus is.
6. It is crowded, noisy and rough; you have to dodge people, potholes in the ground, luggage trolleys, vendors and the ubiquitous madalali left and right!
7. By the time you finally get to your bus, you will be tired enough to hate
whatever made you want to travel!
8. If it happens that you have to go to the toilet before your bus leaves; Oh my God! What you will find there is literary a 'walk in cess pool'. Despite this you will luckily find a cage and a window through which someone collects a user fee! And then you will encounter pools of dirty water/urin to step on, untouchable walls, doors, taps, people, basins; everything is UNTOUCHABLE! You will definitely wish you were somewhere in a jungle!
9. At 06.00 am when your bus is supposed to depart it will be 07.00 am by the time it exits the UBT! Apparently every bus is pushing towards the exit! Resulting in a gridlock! Nobody cares, only you!
10. UBT has no passenger shelter, no offices to get any help whatever, no emergency service, no lights @ night; it's crowded, chaotic and the most dangerous place for visitors, old folk, children, the disabled and everyone!
It's A PLACE IN HELL!
