Kawempe North MP Elias Nalukoola has questioned Parliament’s decision to livestream proceedings on Facebook, citing a ban on the platform that he says was imposed by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC).
Raising a point of procedure, Nalukoola asked Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa to clarify whether broadcasting parliamentary proceedings on the platform complies with Parliament’s Rules of Procedure.
He further challenged Tayebwa to order the immediate lifting of the ban if Parliament’s use of Facebook is deemed permissible.
Facebook has remained officially blocked in Uganda since January 2021, when access to the platform was restricted ahead of the general elections. Despite the restoration of general internet access, the ban on Facebook remains in place.
