Mzumbe University commits to deliver quality education to dominate local market

MZUMBE University has reiterated its commitment to offer quality education and provide beneficiaries with a competitive advantage in local, regional and global market.
The Universitys Vice Chancellor, Professor Joseph Kuzilwa made the remark at the 9th graduation ceremony held on the main campus of the university on Friday where various certificates, diplomas and degrees were conferred.
We have started a quality assurance system to meet that objective, Prof Kuzilwa said, adding that the European Union was funding a project that would eventually see Mzumbe, Makerere University in Uganda and Moi University in Kenya build capacity and quality systems.
The University of Alacante in Spain was coordinating the project while Mzumbe has started a directorate to oversee it at the university and make it a sustainable one. Over 1881 graduated this 2009/10 academic year compared to last year where 1375 graduated, increase of 36.6 per cent.
There were 1310 graduates at Mzumbe campus, out of whom 551 were women and 759 men. Out of the 1310 graduates, 196 received certificates, 50 diploma, 766 bachelor degrees, 298 masters degrees and one doctorate degree.
In addition to his thanks to the government for its contributions, Prof Kuzilwa said the university still faced many challenges including a meagre budget, which affected operational activities, rehabilitation and construction of infrastructures to meet the growing demands.
He said the university had prepared a 10 Higher Education Plan (2010-2020) for introducing a natural science programme in collaboration with other local and foreign institutions in order to address the shortage of scientists in the country.
The chairman of the University Governing Council Prof Daniel Mkude called on the graduates to be good ambassadors of the university by working hard while maintaining discipline and integrity.
He also urged them to desist from corruption activities, HIV/AIDS and educate the public on effects of early pregnancies and killings of elderly people. The graduate of Doctorate degree (Phd in Law) Dr Modesta Opiyo Makopolo thanked God for his guidance throughout the difficult and long academic journey.
