Kijana raia wa Tanzania mwenye umri wa miaka 17, Dunia Tuhenya, amepigwa risasi na kuuawa siku ya Ijumaa jioni katika jiji la Newburg, jimbo la New York, Marekani, tukio lililozua huzuni kubwa miongoni mwa jamii ya wenyeji na Watanzania waishio ughaibuni.
Kwa mujibu wa Polisi wa jiji hilo, tukio hilo la kusikitisha lilitokea majira ya saa mbili usiku katika eneo la Chateau Village Kusini mwa jiji la Newburgh ambapo Dunia alipatikana akiwa na majeraha mabaya na alithibitishwa kufariki dunia papo hapo na wahudumu wa dharura.
Hadi kufikia Jumatatu asubuhi, hakuna mtu yeyote aliyekuwa amekamatwa na Polisi hawajatoa taarifa kuhusu watuhumiwa au sababu ya tukio hilo. Wananchi wametakiwa kujitokeza na kutoa taarifa yoyote itakayosaidia katika uchunguzi unaoendelea.
Tuhenya alikuwa mwanafunzi wa shule ya Newburgh Free Academy na alikuwa amemaliza mwaka wake wa tatu wa masomo. Marafiki na wanafunzi wenzake wamemuelezea kuwa alikuwa kijana “mtulivu, mchapakazi, na mwenye kupendwa na wengi,” huku akielezwa kuwa na ndoto za kuendelea na elimu ya juu.
Kifo cha Tuhenya ambaye alihamia Marekani pamoja na familia yake miaka michache iliyopita akitokea Tanzania kimegusa hisia za wengi, hasa miongoni mwa jamii ya Watanzania waishio Marekani, ambapo mamia walikusanyika kwa mkesha wa maombi na mshikamano uliowekwa maalum kwa ajili ya kumbukumbu yake mwishoni mwa wiki.
“Tumesikitishwa sana na kuondokewa na kijana mwenye ndoto na maisha mbele yake. Dunia alikuwa fahari ya familia na jamii. Tunatoa wito kwa vyombo vya usalama kuhakikisha haki inapatikana haraka.”— amesema Msemaji wa Jumuiya ya Watanzania New York.

The head coach of Marion C. Moore High School’s varsity soccer team told WAVE News the 17-year-old who was shot and killed Tuesday evening in the Newburg neighborhood was the team’s captain. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified him as Dunia Tuhenya on Wednesday evening.
“This was a special player and a special student,” coach Matthias Martinez said. “Never an issue, always great in class, superb on the field... That’s the least to say. He was a great human being.”
Martinez described Tuhenya, who they lovingly called Duni, as a quiet leader.
“I could barely get any words from him,” he recalled. “But once he got on that field, he didn’t have to talk. All his playing did the talking. Nobody ran harder. Nobody was at practice before Duni and nobody left practice after Duni. Duni was always the first one there. Duni was always the last one there.”
The head coach told WAVE News that Tuhenya immigrated with his family to Louisville from Africa. He said he built a special bond with the star athlete because soccer is the “universal language.”
Martinez mentioned it’s been a rough 24 hours for the team. He pointed out that he cancelled the practice scheduled for Wednesday morning and will reconvene with the rest of the team next week.
“Yesterday morning we had practice from 8 to 10:30 a.m. and Duni is there running stretches, running practices, helps us take everything down and at 3:20 or 5 o’clock he’s murdered,” he said. “It’s tough and it’s tough to explain that to 13, 14, 15, 16, 17-year-old student athletes.”
Coach Martinez said Louisville’s youth violence problem is “out of control” and said it’s time for parents and the community in general to come together to help solve the issue before it claims more lives.
“My daily goal is to get these kids to understand there is life out there,” he commented. “There is stuff to do after high school. It doesn’t matter if someone talked bad about you or if somebody stole your Jordans or this or that. There’s always a next day.”
Martinez said the team will find a way to move forward and will dedicate the upcoming season to Tuhenya and to his memory.
“We’ll do everything we can to do everything needed and then compete at the highest level as Duni would want us to,” he emphasized.
WAVE News reached out to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) to try and get more details on this shooting. A spokesperson said they weren’t ready to release any more information.
