Msamaha kutoka Dodoma

Nnauye: CCM not planning to suspend Lowassa

Dodoma.

Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) yesterday moved swiftly to refute reports it was planning to suspend two of its prominent NEC members former Prime Minister Edward Lowasa and one-time Cabinet minister and Attorney General Andrew Chenge.

CCM Ideology and Publicity Secretary Nape Nnauye told journalists that the reports were untrue and asked the media to seek clarification from party officials for accurate reportage. However, when asked what the CCM Central Committee (CC) discussed in its meetings which started on Monday, Mr Nnauye was non-committal. But he said many issues which were discussed by the CC would be forwarded to the National Executive Council (NEC) for final decisions.

"I am not currently at liberty to tell you what was discussed because it is still under review and not ripe for public consumption. We will brief you on what has transpired once we are done," the elusive publicity secretary said.Rumours that CCM has reached a decision to expel the two members from the party swept Dodoma and other regions in the country recently..

Unconfirmed reports said that, there was worry that the move to expel the two from NEC would have affected the party as the two individuals commanded support within CCM, especially through the youth wing.

The reports indicated that the CC was looking for a proper way of dealing with the issue without affecting the party's stability and strength. It was claimed that the Ethics Committee's move to interrogate some of UVCCM leaders last weekend was part of preparations to strip the two of their NEC membership.

Other sources said the CC has decided to keep the matter until NEC meets, although there were fears of a possible leak of secrets that could lead to resistance from other members who strongly opposed any disciplinary measures against Mr Lowassa and Mr Chenge.

But Mr Nape told reporters during a short break by committee members that the party meeting was going on and that members were still discussing various agendas, noting that suspension of Lowassa and Chenge from NEC was not on the list of the agenda.

He said the party was currently discussing how it could establish and operate its financial sources "100 per cent" without depending on government subsidies .
