San Marino Grand Prix: Rossi surges to victory

MotoGP leader Valentino Rossi extended his lead over Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo by winning the San Marino Grand Prix in front of his home crowd.

World champion Rossi, now 30 points clear of the Spaniard with four races left. Rossi - fastest in every session heading into the race, held just a few kilometres from his home town of Tavullia - slipped to third behind Dani Pedrosa and Toni Elias at Turn One, then lost out to Fiat Yamaha team-mate and title rival Jorge Lorenzo at the start of lap two of 28.

But Lorenzo became clogged up behind Elias and, having failed to make a quick pass, was re-taken by Rossi at turn one of lap five. Rossi then made quick work of Elias, but Lorenzo also squeezed past the Gresini Honda rider.

The crucial moment came when Rossi overtook Pedrosa with a neat inside move to lead for the first time on lap eight. While Rossi built an advantage, Lorenzo was stuck behind the Repsol rider, whose factory RC212V was quicker out of the corners and held a near 4km/h top speed advantage over Lorenzo - even with the #99 in his slipstream.

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa took pole position for the San Marino MotoGP at Misano ahead of World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo.

Casey Stoner finished third in the list despite crashing his Ducati only 20 minutes in and only returning for the final minutes of the hour-long session.

Valentino Rossi heads the second row with his replacement at Fiat Yamaha for next season Ben Spies fifth and Randy de Puniet sixth.
Rossi traded third spot with current team-mate Lorenzo for a while until with nine minutes left the Spaniard finally found a time - 1:34.371 - to surpass Pedrosa and Stoner, the latter's having been set early on.

Casey Stoner held off the charge of Dani Pedrosa to win the Aragon MotoGP, with championship leader Jorge Lorenzo forced to settle for fourth.

Australian Stoner, riding a Ducati, started on pole and got away smoothly.

Spaniard Pedrosa (Honda) lost third position early on to Nicky Hayden but then reclaimed that position and soon swept past Lorenzo (Yamaha) as well.

He began to reel in Stoner too, until the Australian put in a series of fast laps to win by a comfortable margin.

Lorenzo was caught on the last lap by Hayden (Ducati), who made an audacious passing move with just a couple of turns to go.
