A section of legislators have started fresh efforts to try and stop the International Criminal Court activities in Kenya.
This follows Chepalungu MP
Isaac Ruto's Motion that seeks to bar ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo from prosecuting suspected masterminds of the post election violence and allow for a local judicial process.
Ruto a close ally of suspended Higher Education Minister William
Ruto, is seeking the support of fellow legislators to persuade the government to withdraw from the Rome Statute by amending the International Crimes Act of 2008.
But Nairobi lawyer Haroun Ndubi in a telephone interview with KBC said attempts by MPs to push the President and the Prime Minister to withdraw from ICC is not possible since the new constitution obligates Kenya to respect the international conventions and we are a signatory to the Rome Statute.
The Chepalungu MP was last year in the forefront of opposing the local tribunal in favour of ICC. He argued then that a local judicial mechanism would be interfered with and Kenyans had faith in ICC.
Most Kenyans feel these prosecutions are vital in order to undermine the deeply rooted culture of impunity.
