A blast has hit a Shia Muslim shrine in Kabul, killing and injuring dozens of people. Many more fled the scene of the attack.

One witness described seeing a suicide bomber blow himself up at the end of a queue near one of the gates to the shrine, which was packed with worshippers marking the Ashura festival

Victims of the blast were transferred to several hospitals around the city, as local people struggled to deal with the numbers of dead and injured

It was the single most deadly attack in the Afghan capital for more than three years.

Smoke rose at the site of the explosion. Officials blamed the Taliban but they denied being behind it.

National Army troops tried to keep onlookers away from the scene.

Police cordoned off the area. The attack appeared to be sectarian, and if so would, be unprecedented in recent Afghan history.

Shia Muslims have been celebrating their festivals more confidently here in recent years, says the BBC's Quentin Sommerville in Kabul.

Meanwhile, in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, a bomb apparently strapped to a bicycle exploded near a mosque, killing four people
