Timu hizo nane zitapangiwa wapinzani wao kutoka Kundi A lenye miamba kama mshindi kati ya Ivory Coast au Liberia (Ivory Coast, 2) ; Misri ( 3) ; Nigeria ( 4) ;Tunisia ( 8) ; Afrika Kusini ( 9) ; Algeria (10) ; Gabon (11) ;

Sir Alex Ferguson says his team beat 'a very good Chelsea side'

Sir Alex Ferguson will fly to Germany on Wednesday for his first spying mission on Schalke, the German club who will almost certainly be Manchester United's semi-final opponents in the Champions League despite having spent long spells of the current season struggling to get away from the Bundesliga's relegation-threatened teams.
Schalke are currently ninth, after a revival since Ralf Rangnick took over as manager last month, but Ferguson can have serious aspirations of reaching the fourth final of his time at Old Trafford.
"We've beaten a very, very good Chelsea side," the United manager said. "Chelsea played their part, and credit to them, but I thought we were the better side and deserved to win. We've hit our form. You saw that in the second half [in the 4-2 win] against West Ham, the performance at Chelsea last week and the performance tonight. This is a great moment for us."
Schalke beat Internazionale 5-2 in the first leg of their quarter-final at San Siro last week and it was pointed out to Ferguson that United did not have a particularly good record against German opposition, losing to Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen in previous semi-finals.
"Tell me about it," he said. "But we can make that change. We've got the momentum you need now and momentum's a great thing in football. Everyone wants to play and the bonus is that we are getting everyone fit now."
Ferguson, a close ally of Carlo Ancelotti, expressed his sympathy for the Chelsea manager, saying he was not surprised that Fernando Torres had started ahead of Didier Drogba. Yet Ferguson also admitted this had been his suspicion because of money not form. "A lot of people thought Drogba would play but I thought that, having spent the money they did on Torres, they had to play him [Torres]. I wasn't 100% certain but I couldn't see them leaving him out."
Ferguson went on to identify Torres's inability to get any success against Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic as one of the key features of the two legs. "Torres has played against us quite a few times and he had a little golden spell against us [for Liverpool] but, if you look at the number of games he's played against us, we've actually done all right against him.
"It's been made out he's terrorised us, and Vidic particularly, but it's not been like that. He's a good player but Vidic and Ferdinand, with their experience, should be able to handle the best players in the world because they're up there in that sphere themselves."
Again the question was asked about whether this team were capable of emulating the 1999 side by winning the treble of Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup. "I keep being asked that ... you need a bit of luck but we have a semi-final [against Manchester City in the FA Cup] on Saturday and we have some great form right now."
Ferguson was asked about reports in Spain that a €20m (£18m) deal has been agreed for the Atlético Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea. "You know, on Italian television they're saying we've signed two players from Italy, so I'd place this with that. There's always speculation but I can't answer it. I think we were linked with 112 players one year."

Carlo Ancelotti uncertain over his Chelsea future after United defeat

• 'It's not my decision whether I stay here or not'
• Italian says Torres's selection may have been a mistake

Carlo Ancelotti has cast doubt on his long-term future as Chelsea manager and admitted the decision as to whether he remains at the club beyond the summer will be determined purely by the owner, Roman Abramovich.
The Italian, who had admitted he was "not afraid" of the consequences of elimination before the Champions League quarter-final defeat at Manchester United, has another 14 months to run on his contract .
"I'm not concerned," he said. "I have to work. I have to try to do my best. It's not my decision whether I stay here or not. I haven't spoken with [Roman]."
Ancelotti did concede that he might have made a mistake by selecting Fernando Torres, the club's £50m British record signing, for the second leg. The Spaniard, who has gone 693 minutes without a goal for Chelsea, was utterly ineffective and was withdrawn at half-time.
Asked whether the 27-year-old's inclusion had been a mistake, the manager said: "Maybe. Could be. But I thought for a lot of time before taking this decision. I preferred to start with Fernando for this kind of game, with this kind of tactics. But Didier played very well in the second half."

Carlo Ancelotti does it his way but result for Chelsea is unchanged

Old Trafford is a stage where the Italian has tasted so much triumph but he was unnerved as his tactical gamble failed

  • The-Chelsea-manager-Carlo-007.jpg
The Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti watches his side crash out of the Champions League. Photograph: Jason Cairnduff/Action Images

Carlo Ancelotti had stood lonely in his technical area as the taunt was picked up by the majority crammed into this arena, the cruel chorus of "You're getting sacked in the morning" echoing into the night sky. There was a helplessness about the Italian. This tie had already veered out of his control and with it his side's only chance of securing silverware this season. By the end he was hunched in his disappointment as he shuffled towards the tunnel, exiting stage left from a theatre in which he had previously flourished.
There is the potential for the last six weeks of this campaign to be agonising for Ancelotti. The manager himself admitted after this elimination that his future at the club is at the whim of the owner, Roman Abramovich. That, in itself, represents no radical change of policy. Four managers have been dismissed by the Russian in his eight years at the club, with each dispatched ruthlessly. But until there is public backing issued from the very top of this club, rather than shady suggestions that the manager's position will be "reviewed" in May, the run-in will be dominated by rumours of the possible arrival of Guus Hiddink, Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard, even José Mourinho, to fill his shoes.
Those last seven league games must still yield a top-four finish, the bare minimum expected of any Chelsea manager, though recovering from this crippling disappointment will hardly be easy. "We need to move on quickly," said Ancelotti. "We are out of the Champions League and this is not good for us. We are disappointed but this is football. We have to be able to look forward. Above all we have other games to play and win, if possible, because we all want to play in the Champions League next season."
There was an irony that the Italian should be forced to endure this here. Ancelotti used to cherish visits to this arena, the scene of his Milan team's European Cup success over Juventus in 2003, when a corner of south Manchester was transformed into little Italy for one night only. Even last year, when Chelsea had been seeking to regain the Premier League title after four years, it was here that their defining victory was achieved. United were beaten, their challenge broken. This is a stage upon which Ancelotti had tasted so much triumph.
Yet, his mood anchored in defeat, those memories will already be fading. The visiting manager looked unnerved at times on Tuesday night, his frustration clear that his "special" tactical gamble – a switch from 4-4-2 to 4-3-2-1 – had not produced the goal the away team's initial assuredness had suggested would be theirs. Half-chances were missed, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres fluffing their lines. By the interval Chelsea trailed and the manager, unnerved, had already conceded that his pre-match tactics had been flawed.
Torres, as ever, was the focus of the frustration. Ancelotti had been at pains last week to say he was under no pressure from the hierarchy to select the £50m British record signing from the start, and reiterated as much after this occasion. Yet his inclusion and the omission of Didier Drogba – even with the Ivorian's poor scoring record of one goal in his previous 13 matches – stood out as startling and rather unconvincing. The post-match admission that the selection may have been a mistake betrayed his doubts. "I wanted to put more pressure in front," he added. "But at half-time we needed to score. Didier was fresh and could use his power in front, so I took off Fernando."
It all felt so deeply unsatisfactory. Ancelotti will curse his inability to squeeze a single goal from the Spain striker in 693 minutes as a Chelsea player but this club spent a vast amount on a player whose form had been erratic. It has rather stagnated since. "We have to believe in him," he said. "We have to wait until he improves." Torres will be a Chelsea player next season, when the team could potentially be constructed around him. Whether Ancelotti is there to oversee his recovery remains in doubt.
In the end the manager enjoyed barely 60 seconds of hope here – the time it took between Drogba's equaliser and Park Ji-sung's winner – before Chelsea's chances were extinguished. This season's unexpected toils should not be laid upon him alone.
This had been a team in need of regeneration, a process that began last summer with the release of a quintet of senior players and the arrival of Ramires and continued with the £73m spent on Torres and David Luiz in the new year.
There will be more trimming to come, with occasions such as this – not to mention the club's deficit in the title defence – illustrating the time has come for change. José Bosingwa and Paulo Ferreira, maybe Florent Malouda and Yuri Zhirkov, and perhaps even Drogba and Nicolas Anelka – both of whom will be entering the final 12 months of their deals – could in effect be rendered available. That would have felt unthinkable a year ago but so would the possible departure of a double-winning manager.
Now those realities may be closing in upon Chelsea.

Carroll iongoza Liverpool kuichakaza Man City Send to a friend Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:55

LIVERPOOL, England

ìAmeumia mguu itakuwa vigumu kwake kucheza Jumamosi.

Lionel Messi's first-half goal ensured that this tie, which looked over after the first leg, when Shakhtar were obliterated in the Camp Nou, reached a tame conclusion.
Messi's goal, his 48th of the season, set up a probable semi-final tie against their Spanish rivals Real Madrid, barring a miracle comeback from Tottenham Hotspur – 4-0 down after the first leg – on Wednesday night.
Shakhtar, who knocked out Roma in the previous round, started well and dominated the early stages of the game while Barcelona lay back and soaked up the pressure from the Ukrainian side without ever really being troubled.
But, as with every side that has faced Barcelona this season, Shakhtar learned the hard lesson that if you cannot punish the Catalans when you are on top, then they will punish you. And so it proved just before half-time.
Dani Alves found space on the right hand side. He squared the ball to Messi and the Argentinian danced around a few defenders before slotting the ball past Andriy Pyatov in the Shakhtar net. It was his ninth goal in 10 Champions league games this season.
The second half brought more of the same from both sides. Shakhtar continued to press, and required Víctor Valdés to pull off some good saves in the visitors' goal. But Barcelona were once more able to contain with Messi again the star of the Barça show.
Barcelona are now in the semi-finals for the fourth successive season and face the prospect of playing Real Madrid four times in different competitions over the coming weeks, starting with Saturday's league game in Madrid.

Real ikimaliza kwa Spurs safari kwa Barca Send to a friend Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:56

LONDON, England
