Schalke swept to a stunning 5-2 victory over defending champion Inter Milan in the first leg of their Champions league quarterfinal at San Siro on Tuesday.
Dejan Stankovic gave Inter the lead 29 seconds into the match, but Schalke leveled through Joel Matip. Diego Milito scored his first Champions League goal of the season to put Inter back in front, but Edu scored the first of his brace to bring Schalke level before halftime.

Inter nearly retook the lead soon after the break, but two goals in quick succession from Raul Gonzalez and an own goal from Andrea Ranocchia put the German side in total control.
Inter defender Cristian Chivu was sent off in the 62nd and with Inter's defense stretched to its limit, Edu added his second in the 75th.
The result was all the more remarkable given that Schalke was without key players Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Christoph Metzelder, Mario Gavranovic and Peer Kluge.
Meanwhile the defensive problems that Inter has displayed since losing Walter Samuel to injury earlier in the season were eagerly seized upon by Schalke's attack. Inter has now conceded eight goals in just two games, while Chivu's sending off was his second in two matches.
The game was less than half a minute old when Inter took the lead. Esteban Cambiasso played a ball over the Schalke defense toward Milito. Manuel Neuer raced out of his area and headed the ball clear, but it fell to Stankovic on the halfway line and the Serbian showed tremendous technique to volley the ball over the stricken goalkeeper and into the net for his second Champions League goal of the season.
Schalke hit straight back though and Raul twice went close with headers.

The equalizer came in the 17th minute when Jefferson Farfan picked out the unmarked Kyriakos Papadopoulos with a corner. Julio Cesar made a desperate low block to stop his header but Matip reacted first to sweep home the loose ball from close range.
Both teams continued to press and Milito had penalty appeals waved away after he went down in the box, Cesar stopped Jose Manuel Jurado's effort with his feet and Samuel Eto'o had a goal chalked off for offside.
Inter grabbed its second in the 34th when Wesley Sneijder crossed to the unmarked Cambiasso, who headed the ball across the face of goal for his fellow Argentine Milito to volley in from close range.
Again Schalke hit back. Alexander Baumjohann played Edu through on goal, Cesar saved his first shot after it was deflected off Chivu, but the Brazilian reached the rebound first to scramble the ball into the net from a tight angle.
Just before halftime Farfan was booked for pulling back Inter captain Javier Zanetti and the Peruvian is now suspended for the second leg.
Inter had two early chances at the start of the second half, with Milito shooting wide from Sneijder's pass and shortly after Neuer acrobatically stopping Eto'o's shot.
Farfan then set up former Real Madrid striker Raul to give Schalke the lead. The three-time Champions League winner's touch took him clear of Ranocchia to score his 70th Champions League goal of all time.
Schalke doubled its lead in the 57th shortly afterwards. Jurado raced down the right and tried to pick out Raul with a low cross, but before the Spaniard could strike Ranocchia slid in and deflected the ball past the helpless Cesar.
The night continued to get worse for Inter when Chivu was sent off for a second yellow card before Jurado came close to making it five for his side when his low shot rebounded back off the post.
Farfan also hit the post after charging through a demoralized Inter defense and when the ball wasn't cleared from the rebound Edu fired in his second of the night to leave Inter needing four away goals and a clean sheet in the second leg to hang onto its trophy.

Real Madrid beats 10-man Tottenham 4-0 in CL quarterfinal first leg

Emmanuel Adebayor headed a goal in each half as Real Madrid hammered 10-man Tottenham 4-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday.
Adebayor beat Jermaine Jenas to the ball after just four minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium to guide a header past goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and through the legs of Luka Modric on the line.

Tottenham was left with 10 men from the 15th minute when Peter Crouch earned a second booking for a rash tackle.
Adebayor added Madrid's second by guiding Marcelo's cross home in the 57th minute before late goals from Angel Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo ensured a comfortable advantage ahead of next week's return leg at White Hart Lane.
Ronaldo, Di Maria and Marcelo were rushed back from injury to start for nine-time Madrid, which was playing in the last eight for the first time in seven years.
William Gallas passed a fitness test to anchor Tottenham's back line with Gareth Bale starting on the left flank after recovering from a hamstring injury. Aaron Lennon was named in the starting 11, but Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said the England winger felt unwell after warmup and was replaced just before kickoff by Jermaine Jenas. The speedy England winger's absence was noted as Spurs' attack disappeared behind Madrid's second half barrage.
''To get to halftime like we did, I thought we could hang in there and would have a chance. But then our legs ran out a bit,'' Redknapp said.
Tottenham's first matchup against Madrid for 26 years started poorly as the north London club watched Ronaldo pepper its goal in the early stages before Di Maria's close shot was deflected for the corner from which Adebayor scored the opening goal.

Crouch was booked twice for a pair of reckless tackles deep inside Madrid's half - the England striker scything into Sergio Ramos in the eighth minute before later taking out Marcelo.
''He shouldn't take that chance that he might get a red card, so I was disappointed,'' Redknapp said. ''It was an uphill task after that, an impossible task.''
Madrid kept up the pressure while Tottenham looked to strike on the break. Rafael Van der Vaart - playing against his former team for the first time - missed a chance from inside the area in the 28th minute before Bale surged past Ramos to reach a long ball, but his shot past Iker Casillas sliced into the side netting.
Adebayor was guilty of a glaring miss in the 32nd as Ramos did well to head across goal toward the Togo striker from a difficult position.
Pepe took out Bale in the chase for a pass in the 36th minute for a yellow card that will see the Portugal defender miss the return leg.
Madrid coach Jose Mourinho couldn't have been happy as his side wasted much of its first-half possession, creating few decent scoring chances.
Van der Vaart was replaced by striker Jermain Defoe but Madrid controlled from the restart as it patiently tried to pick Spurs apart with Ronaldo putting a couple of chances wide.
Adebayor doubled the advantage when left alone inside the box and nearly had a third headed goal in the 66th, denied only by Gomes' quick reaction to tip over the crossbar.
Di Maria's individual effort made it 3-0 in the 72nd as the Argentina forward moved clear from Benoit Assou-Ekotto before unleashing a curling shot from outside the area beyond Gomes into the top corner.
Late substitute Kaka, returning from injury to play for the first time since Feb. 26, also made his mark as the Brazil playmaker spotted Ronaldo at the far side with a cross in the 82nd that the Portugal international volleyed low past Gomes inside the near post for his fifth of the competition.
Nine-time champion Madrid has never been eliminated over two legs after a 4-0 opening win on home soil.
''It's going to be very difficult - we have a mountain to climb'' Redknapp said, adding that the difference in quality had much to do with Madrid's spending. ''It's difficult, impossible to compete with teams like that.''

Dawson: Red card proved crucial

Tottenham captain Michael Dawson admitted Peter Crouch's sending-off proved crucial in their 4-0 hammering by Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
The striker was sent off in the 15th minute of the Champions League quarter-final first leg for two bookings with Spurs already 1-0 down.

Madrid took full advantage of their numerical superiority, but Dawson is refusing to give up hope completely.
"We go away disappointed, we've got to pick ourselves up because we've got to put in a performance next week," Dawson said on Sky Sports Two.
"After going down to 10 men early on it was so difficult."
Tottenham, who conceded an early Emmanuel Adebayor goal, managed to keep the scoreline to 1-0 by half-time, but Madrid ran away with the match it the second half.
"We defended well after giving the early goal away, we got blocks in," added Dawson.
"To give another goal away was disappointing and then they scored two top-class goals.
"The White Hart Lane faithful will be there next Wednesday and we've got to go out and give it our all."
Xabi Alonso insisted the tie was not over. "Not even close," the former Liverpool player said on Sky Sports 2.
"We have seen so many great comebacks. Hopefully this won't be the case, but we have to be ready."
The Spain international added: "We needed to be patient, we knew the chances would come. As soon as we scored the second one they were a little bit down.
"The result is fantastic but the tie is not won yet."

Wayne Rooney was a notable absentee for Manchester United's main group session during training ahead of Wednesday's clash with Chelsea.
As required by UEFA, United opened the doors of their Carrington training complex for the first 15 minutes of their pre-match session and Rooney, in the spotlight following his reaction to scoring a hat-trick at West Ham on Saturday, did not appear.

There was no official word from the Red Devils as to the reason for the 25-year-old England striker's absence and it was still expected that he will play in the Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash in London.
However, beyond question is the fact that all eyes will be on Rooney when the striker does eventually appear after he was charged with using abusive language at Upton Park, which brings the potential for a two-match ban.
United must decide by this evening whether to contest the charge which, as it presently stands, would rule Rooney out of Saturday's Premier League game with Fulham and the following weekend's FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City at Wembley.
There was good news for United though as long-term absentees Rio Ferdinand and Anderson both trained, raising the likelihood that they will be involved at Chelsea as Sir Alex Ferguson's men look to gain a positive result that would leave them well placed to secure a semi-final encounter with either Inter Milan or Schalke in next Tuesday's second leg.

222, a slap on the wrist seeing they don't have any ground currently in the rules according to the PFA that would allow banning a player from matches, in which giving the FA time to write up something pretty. Suspended ban would go into effect if Rooney is punished in the future for unsporting behavior then the suspended 2 games would be added on to that punishment.

Larry, I think the PFA's statement will see that the ban is reduced to 1 game if not pulled all together and a warning issued or suspended ban....the latter two are if the FA can stomach looking like twatts? Well I guess we all know they can handle that now.....LOL

By the way Rooney has admitted the charge but appealed against the automatic two game ban.....that's an unnecessary risk IMO. He obviously doesn't want to miss the FA Cup semi; it's only the noisy neighbors anyhow lol. Now he runs the risk of missing out against N'Caslte in EPL too. Let's see what the wooly headed FA does with that.

No new injuries for Ancelotti

Chelsea appear to have no new injury concerns for Wednesday night's Champions League showdown against Manchester United.
The Blues trained on Tuesday morning at their Cobham headquarters, with all their senior players taking part in the session.

That included David Luiz, who is cup-tied in the Champions League, and is set to be replaced by Branislav Ivanovic for the quarter-final first leg at Stamford Bridge.
But the big question will be who starts up front, with Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou vying for what has recently been two berths.
If body language is anything to go by, Torres looks set for a recall.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti spent the opening few minutes of training engaged in discussion and friendly banter with the misfiring Spaniard, even pretending to throttle and punch him.
Drogba staked his claim to partner Torres by scoring the equaliser in Saturday's Premier League draw at Stoke, ending his own long goal drought.
However, the duo have failed to forge an understanding on the field on the rare occasions they have been partnered, while Nicolas Anelka has been scintillating in the Champions League this season.
Kalou, meanwhile, is arguably in the best overall form of the quartet.
Although, with all four strikers netting just three goals between them in the last two months, that is not saying much.
Yossi Benayoun and Alex both trained but Ancelotti has already said the duo are unlikely to play a part as they continue to build up their fitness following long-term lay-offs.
Ancelotti will address the media later on Tuesday, when he may reveal more about his likely line-up.

Shakhtar looks to surprise Barcelona in CL

Shakhtar Donetsk will look to spring a surprise on Spanish champion Barcelona when the teams meet Wednesday in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.
The Ukrainian club has reached the last eight for the first time but its hopes of progressing are slim against the tournament favorite, which is coming off a 1-0 win over Villarreal to increase its lead over Real Madrid and extend its unbeaten league run to 28 games.
''We will try to play well, win and get a good result that will allow us to not suffer as much in the away leg,'' Barcelona striker David Villa said.

Shakhtar has won five straight European matches, including both games in a 6-2 aggregate win over Roma in the previous round, and is dominating the Ukrainian league with a 12-point lead over its nearest rival.
Shakhtar is hoping to return for the April 12 return leg at Donbass Arena with a chance since the club is unbeaten on home soil in two years.
''It's a great success. Now we're faced with the next task: progress even further against the best team in the world,'' Shakhtar captain Dario Srna said. ''We have to do our best to get a good result in Barcelona.''
While Barcelona continues to collect victories, the wear and tear of the season has led to a drop off in its offensive production and some injuries that can give the visitors some hope.
Argentina forward Lionel Messi hasn't scored since Barcelona eliminated Arsenal in the last round - a stretch of three games - and Villa hasn't scored in six games.
''The (goals) will come eventually and if I don't score a teammate does,'' Villa said. ''(But) whenever you don't score you are a little worried.''
Three-time champion Barcelona is without captain Carles Puyol (knee) and France defender Eric Abidal, who is recovering from liver tumor surgery. Forward Pedro Rodriguez and fullback Maxwell are also just returning from injury.
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola is likely to pair defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets with Gerard Pique in the center of the defense to contain Shakhtar's attacking pair of Luiz Adriano and Eduardo, who have scored four goals apiece in the competition.
Eduardo (ankle) is expected to be available while Brazilian playmaker Fernandinho returned from a broken leg in the 3-1 win at Illichivets on Friday.
''They have very fast players, small and explosive. Our Brazilians are essentially the same kind of players,'' Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu said. ''However, in terms of interaction on the pitch our opponents have the advantage, as they have been playing together for longer.''
Shakhtar defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy will also be motivated on his return to the Camp Nou after being sold back to Shakhtar last year after a disappointing season following a ?25 million (then $35.8 million) transfer. The 24-year-old Chygrynskiy arrived at Barcelona as a possible long-term replacement for Puyol, but the Ukraine center back never adjusted and made only 12 appearances.
The pair most recently met in the 2009 European Supercup final when Pedro's extra time goal lifted Barcelona to a 1-0 victory.
But the 2009 UEFA Cup champions have tasted victory at the Camp Nou before. Shakhtar won 3-2 that same season in a Champions League group match that was essentially meaningless to eventual champion Barcelona, which had already secured the top spot.

Cech desperate to sink United

Petr Cech is hoping Chelsea avenge their 2008 heartache by knocking Manchester United out of the Champions League.
Chelsea lost in the final three years ago to United in Moscow when the Red Devils won on a penalty shoot-out.

This is the first time the two sides have met in Europe's top club tournament since the final in Russia, and Cech is looking forward to the clash - with the first leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
But Cech insists revenge is not on his mind and he also says this is because United did not really win the match as the game was decided on spot-kicks.
"The records will say they won the game but they didn't really win it. They just had more luck in the shoot-out than we had," he told The Sun.
"What's in the past is in the past. We are looking forward to the future and we hope this time it will be us who go through.
"We still go into that game with confidence because our record against Manchester United in recent years is very good, especially at home.
"We go into the game thinking it could be the advantage. If we get a good result, we'll be in a good position.
"An advantage for us is that we know their players and their team, and going to Old Trafford we will not discover anything new.
"We've played there many times and won there last season, so we can be positive.
"It's a pity we're not in the position in the league where we wanted to be. But in terms of progress in the Champions League, we are in a good position.
"We are hoping we can manage to go through.
"The belief is coming back into the team and we are feeling confident because we are on a good run of results.
"The Champions League is such a special trophy but I don't think you can compare it or wonder whether it would cover not winning the title.
