Arsenal went out of a third competition in two weeks on Saturday when Manchester United reached the FA Cup semifinals with a 2-0 victory that vindicated manager Alex Ferguson's selection gamble.
Seven defenders started for United and left back Fabio da Silva, playing in midfield, opened the scoring before striker Wayne Rooney headed in another in the second half.
"We got our goals, luckily I pulled off a couple of saves and we defended well," United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar said.
The Gunners' hopes of a first title since the 2005 FA Cup now rely on overhauling United's three-point lead in the Premier League after Barcelona ended their European campaign and Birmingham beat them in the League Cup final.
Birmingham won't be returning to Wembley Stadium this season after Lee Chung-yong's 90th-minute header gave Bolton a 3-2 victory in Saturday's other quarterfinal.
Ahead of the Old Trafford match, both managers shared the same plight. Governing bodies have charged Ferguson (the FA) and Arsene Wenger (UEFA) over their conduct toward referees, while a miserable run of results left them both in need of a cup win.
But after United bounced back on Saturday from Premier League losses to Chelsea and Liverpool, it is Ferguson in a buoyant mood as his focus shifts to Tuesday's last 16 Champions League match against Marseille.
With one eye on beating the French side after drawing 0-0 away, Ferguson deployed an experimental side packed with defenders that recognized the ability of Fabio and twin Rafael da Silva to play in more attacking roles on the flanks.
"I couldn't risk (Paul) Scholes and (Ryan) Giggs because of Tuesday's game," Ferguson said. "That is such an important game for the club and if you look at the injuries in midfield I had to come up with a plan or an idea to utilize our energy."
Rafael could have put United in front when his brother whipped in a cross had his header been directed lower.
But Fabio found the net in the 28th minute after starting the move with a surging run.
Having set up Rooney's cross for Javier Hernandez, whose header was palmed away by goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, Fabio sent the rebound into the net.
United's 40-year-old goalkeeper Van der Sar showed that he might be retiring too early in May by pulling off a string of fine saves from Robin van Persie and Laurent Koscielny.
Rooney extended United's lead four minutes into the second half. Hernandez's shot after latching onto Rafael's cross was blocked by Almunia, but Rooney met the loose ball with a header that lacked power but fell into the net.
Arsenal's misery was compounded when defender Johan Djourou was stretchered off after dislocating his right shoulder in a collision with teammate Bacary Sagna as Almunia stopped Hernandez scoring a third. Having used all three substitutes, Arsenal had to play with 10 men for the last 10 minutes of the match.
"I cannot fault our effort but things do not go our way at present," Wenger said. "Subconsciously I feel the disappointment of Tuesday (at Barcelona) played a part in the game. You could see something has gone, not in our effort or attitude, but confidence wise.
"But I don't feel like the season is slipping away. I believe we can do it. It is a good test for us now to show we can regroup and show the mental strength and togetherness quickly."
Bolton will be contesting its first FA Cup semifinal since 2000 when it lost to Aston Villa.
After the visitors twice threw away the lead, South Korea winger Lee ghosted into the penalty area to meet Kevin Davies' header across the goal to nod in Bolton's winner.
"Lee is capable of playing for any team," Bolton manager Owen Coyle said. "He hasn't had a break for two years though and we have to be careful with him."
Lee made an impact with his first touch after coming off the bench with 30 minutes to go, clearing the ball off the line from David Murphy following Sebastian Larsson's corner.
Bolton forward Johan Elmander's fierce left-footed strike put Bolton in front, but it was canceled out before halftime by Cameron Jerome.
Kevin Davies restored Bolton's lead with a 66th-minute penalty after being tripped by defender Curtis Davies.
Birmingham forward Kevin Phillips thought he secured a replay when he hooked the ball over goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen in the 80th.
On Sunday, Manchester City hosts Reading and West Ham is at Stoke.

Manchester City target Dani Alves is determined to sign a new contract at Primera Division giants Barcelona.
Alves has been unable to agree a new deal with the Catalan club and admits he is frustrated by Barca's stance during recent negotiations.
"I don't feel the club have bent over backwards to renew my contract - it's a feeling I have," he told local newspaper Sport.
"I just want an agreement to be reached now, or within a few days.
"I don't like the fact there have been so many rumours - I'm as committed to this project as anyone in the squad."
Alves has been a key part of Barca's success under Pep Guardiola, adding a new dimension to the club's attacking play with his dangerous forays down the right flank.
Widely considered to be the best in the world in his position, Alves knows he would be expensive to replace and admits he wants parity with the club's highest earners.
"I won't be a hypocrite - if the club want to replace me it could cost them dear," he said.
"What Dani wants is for the club to value him depending on his importance and influence within the squad.
"If they do that, I'll be delighted and if not, thanks for these years (at the club)."
In the meantime, however, the 27-year-old says he remains fully committed to the Barca cause.
"I will break my back for this team, even if I don't renew," he said.
"It's a dream to form part of this dressing room and whatever is said, written or protested, my name is already written in the history of this club."
Indeed, Alves has won eight major trophies at Barca, having previously won five titles in a highly successful spell at Sevilla.
The defender returns to his former club tomorrow in a key match for Barca.
The Catalans currently lead fierce rivals Real Madrid by seven points with 11 rounds of the league campaign remaining and Alves believes away wins at Sevilla, Villarreal and in Madrid could seal a third successive Primera Division crown for Guardiola's side.
"Valencia (who Barca beat 1-0 last week) was a big win and Sevilla would be as well," he said.
"Then comes Villarreal and the Bernabeu, and if we win all four we will be close, but there are more games to play as well."
Alves believes this Barcelona side can be considered one of the best teams in history.
"Alongside the Brazil side that won the World Cups in 1958 and 1962, I think we are (the best)," he said.
Those credentials will be put to the test at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Sunday, on what will be Guardiola's 1,000th day in charge of the Catalan club.
Barca are still without captain Carles Puyol, who is injured, but Guardiola should have an otherwise full-strength squad available.
Sevilla goalkeeper Andres Palop and winger Diego Perotti are doubtful, but striker Alvaro Negredo could return from a knock picked up in last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao.

Karim Benzema's third brace in three games lifted Real Madrid 2-0 over Hercules in the Spanish league on Saturday.
Madrid remained perfect in 22 games in all competitions at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium this season and provisionally moved to within four points of league leader Barcelona ahead of its visit to Sevilla on Sunday.
With topscorer Cristiano Ronaldo recovering from a leg injury, Benzema's quality stood out in an otherwise uninspiring performance from his team.
The France striker grabbed the lead for the hosts in the 24th minute finishing off a nice team buildup, and sealed the win in the 56th with a great individual effort.
"I am (playing) well and I have been lucky to score two goals, but I have to give thanks to all the team," Benzema told TV's Canal Plus.
"The league isn't over and we have to work to win the games we have left."
Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid squandered a double by Sergio Aguero to settle for a 2-2 draw at Almeria, and Zaragoza beat third-place Valencia 4-0 to move four points clear of the relegation zone.
Hercules started well, but it failed to convert its good football into a goal, and has gone 11 games without scoring away from Alicante.
Madrid coach Jose Mourinho rested midfielder Xabi Alonso and defender Pepe with the return leg of his team's Champions League round of 16 series against Lyon set for Wednesday.
Madrid lacked the creative team attack that was showed without Ronaldo last week at Racing Santander when it played its most attractive football of the season in an electric first half.
Hercules had the first shot on goal in the 10th when former Madrid striker Javier Portillo weakly rolled the ball into the arms of goalkeeper Iker Casillas, and defender Noe Paramot sent a header over the crossbar in the 17th.
But Mesut Oezil sparked Madrid with a pass to right back Alvaro Arbeloa, who crossed low for Benzema to fire in unmarked.
Despite going behind, Hercules did not fold as goalkeeper Juan Calatayud saved a header from Emmanuel Adebayor in the 28th, and Casillas had to make saves to deny Olivier Thomert and Fransisco Femenia before halftime.
Adebayor came close to Madrid's second right after the restart when his header rattled the crossbar before Benzema decided the match.
Benzema received the ball in the left corner, advanced along the end line before cutting back and shooting inside the far post with a beautiful right-footed strike.
Benzema, much questioned during the first half of the season, has nine goals in league play.
"We have to take full advantage of Benzema's state of grace," Casillas said. "We hope that he continues the streak as long as possible."
Calatayud made a number of saves as time ran down to prevent Hercules from suffering a worse defeat.
At Juegos Mediterraneos stadium, Aguero gave Atletico the lead once in each half, but his team's lackluster defense relinquished the advantage on both occasions.
Almeria's Albert Crusat canceled out Aguero's 39th-minute opener with a volley in the 49th.
The Argentina forward made it 2-1 for the visitors in the 61st, perfectly placing a left-footed shot inside the post of Diego Alves' goal, but substitute striker Henok Goitom headed home to pull Almeria even in the 77th.
"I am very angry we didn't win this game," Aguero told Spanish sports daily AS. "Almeria also showed its merits, but I don't care. We can't let points escape like this."
Atletico is 11 points out of the Champions League positions.
Aguero leads Atletico with 11 goals this season.
In Zaragoza, Javier Aguirre's team went ahead in the fifth with a header from Czech defender Jiri Jarosik, and Ander Herrera made it 2-0 slotting the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the 40th after Ikechuwku Uche played through the defense.
Valencia - fresh off its midweek exit from the Champions League - struggled to manufacture scoring chances throughout the game.
Gabi Fernandez capped the rout with a pair of spot kicks in the 65th and 75th after Marius Stankevicius was sent off for fouling Nicolas Bertolo and David Albelda tripped Braulio Nobrega in the area.
On Sunday, Barcelona visits Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium looking to equal a club record of 26 league games without a loss set in 1973-74.
Also, it's: Osasuna vs. Racing Santander, Real Sociedad vs. Malaga, Espanyol vs. Deportivo La Coruna, Levante vs. Mallorca, and Villarreal vs. Sporting Gijon.
Athletic Bilbao travels to Getafe on Monday to close round 28.

Brazil striker Luis Fabiano has rejoined former club Sao Paulo from Sevilla for 7.6million euros after agreeing a four-year deal.
Fabiano is currently sidelined for around six weeks with a knee injury suffered in last weekend's defeat to Athletic Bilbao.
The 30-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful three-year spell at Sao Paulo earlier in his career, scoring 118 goals in 160 games before moving to Porto in 2004.
After a short spell in Portugal, the forward moved to Sevilla, where he scored 106 goals in all competitions and helped the Andalusian club win six trophies, including two UEFA Cup and two Copa del Rey crowns.
In August Luis Fabiano, after months of transfer speculation linking him with a move away, signed a two-year contact extension with Sevilla tying him to the club until 2013.
This season the former Ponte Preta and Rennes hitman has not been an automatic starter for Sevilla, but remains their joint-leading scorer in La Liga with 10 goals.
Luis Fabiano, who made financial sacrifices to help push through the move, said: "Money is not everything in life. Nothing could pay for how happy I am to once again be able to wear the shirt of the team closest to my heart.
"I owe everything I have to Sao Paulo. I'm going to sweat for this shirt and I'm going to score many goals. I'm already thinking about coming out of the dressing room tunnel at the Morumbi stadium."
Luis Fabiano is set to be presented by Sao Paulo on March 30.

Seville has really done downhill since Dani Alves left. Slowly but surely. Its to bad they had arugably there golden-era in the past few years. Now they have Jesus Navas ---who has fitness trouble---and a few serviceable players like Romaric and Deigo Perotti but not much else.

Real Madrid striker Emmanuel Adebayor has stated that he will do everything he can to make his loan spell permanent.
He is with the Spanish giants until the end of the season on loan from Manchester City, but has had a mixed start to life at the Bernabeu having scored two goals in seven games.
Despite becoming a key figure with Arsenal prior to his move to Eastlands, Adebayor slowly cut a more frustrated figure during his time in England, and moved away after five years in the country.
Adebayor is proud to be at Madrid and is happy to be feeling the love from the supporters.
"I can tell. I hear my name chanted around the stadium. It's important to feel loved. I will do everything possible to stay here as long as possible," he told Spanish daily AS.
"I came here to do something. I have made something of myself in football and spent years playing at the highest level, but I'm still empty-handed.
"For me, the most important thing is to win trophies. When I joined Arsenal, I never imagined that I wouldn't win anything. Here I have to do everything I can to make it happen."
The 27-year-old is so eager to impress he has even gone to the lengths of cutting his hair to fit in with the club's values.
"I had dreadlocks for three years but, when the opportunity to play for Madrid arose, I knew I'd have them cut off," he added.
"This haircut is more appropriate for an institution like Madrid. I'm doing everything possible to integrate."
Adebayor left Arsenal under a dark cloud despite becoming one of Arsene Wenger's key men during his time there, after admitting that he would welcome a move to AC Milan and falling out with the club's supporters.
Although the player moved to City to the despair of the Gunners, Adebayor admitted that if he could have, he would have stayed at the Emirates for the rest of his career.
"It was another level there. Bergkamp, Henry and Van Persie were there - it made me improve as a footballer. I became a key figure in attack and it shows that I was a success," he continued.
"(Arsene Wenger taught me) to arrive on time at training, to be professional, how to mentally recover, to act professionally with the other players in the dressing room."
Asked if he felt angry about his exit from the North London club, he replied: "To be honest, yes. I left frustrated. I loved the club. When I was young, one of my dreams was to play for Arsenal because my idol, Kanu, played there. I thought I would stay there for the rest of my career.
"[Manchester City] was a difficult experience. Mancini has a way of approaching the game. It's life - you have to accept it. I don't feel any resentment."

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho will be without Cristiano Ronaldo and Ricardo Carvalho for Saturday's game against Hercules, and has bizarrely threatened to leave out goalkeeper Iker Casillas next weekend to "make it easy" for Barcelona to win La Liga.
Mourinho used his pre-match press conference on Friday morning to once again hit out at the fixture schedule he believes favours Pep Guardiola's side, and claimed he could omit Spain captain Casillas against Atletico Madrid a week tomorrow in order to aid Barca's cause.
"Iker won't be with us because he won't be in the squad against Atletico [next weekend]," he said. "If they want to end the league before time, I might as well make it easy for them."
Ronaldo and Carvalho have been left out of Mourinho's squad, the former recovering from injury and the latter rested with Wednesday's Champions League last-16 second leg against Lyon in mind.
Lassana Diarra returns after suspension, though, while Alvaro Arbeloa, Sami Khedira and Ezequiel Garay are back from injuries.
Mourinho reiterated his unhappiness with the fixture schedule, which he claims has worked in Barca's favour.
"We are in a situation where as soon as we drop a point we lose the championship, although not mathematically so," said the Portuguese. "I am not stupid and I know this.
"There is a team that played in the Champions League on Tuesday and have no game in the league until the following Sunday [Barca this week], while another one is forced to play in Europe on Wednesday and then Saturday in the league [Madrid next week].
"Not everyone has the same chance to compete. Not everyone plays under the same rules. The competition is not open. I will not comment further."
Madrid defend the best home record in La Liga against a Hercules side with just one away win this season, but Mourinho's men will know better than to underestimate the Alicante-based outfit.
Hercules have picked up only six points on their travels - the second-worst tally in La Liga - and netted only three goals, but three of those points and two of those goals came in their shock victory over Barca at the Nou Camp in September.
However, Madrid have won their last 23 successive games at the Bernabeu, and in 13 league fixtures in front of their own fans this campaign they have scored 44 goals and conceded just six, with their last home game resulting in a 7-0 thrashing of Malaga.
That form makes second-placed Madrid overwhelming favourites to defeat third-bottom Hercules.
A home win would provisionally cut Barca's lead at the summit to four points, with the Catalan giants facing a tough trip to Sevilla on Sunday.
While Madrid are still in contention for three titles this season, Hercules are fighting to avoid an immediate return to the Segunda Division.
The top-flight newcomers had looked set to stay up with relative ease earlier in the season as they proved themselves a tough opponent, especially for La Liga's big guns.
Aside from their win over Barca, Hercules also beat Sevilla, drew with Villarreal and thrashed Atletico Madrid 4-1.
However, they have picked up just seven points from a possible 33 in 2011 and now find themselves in the bottom three following last weekend's 2-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Almeria.
The promoted club are now a point adrift of safety and are widely expected to suffer more misery at the hands of Madrid on Saturday, although coach Esteban Vigo is not giving up the game for lost.
"Winning at Barcelona also looked difficult," he said. "The thought that we cannot win at Madrid has not even entered our heads."
Paraguay forward Nelson Haedo Valdez, scorer of both goals in the 2-0 win at the Nou Camp, is available again after injury, but Royston Drenthe, David Trezeguet, Tote and Francisco Pena are all missing.

Barcelona's focus returns to the domestic title race at Sevilla on Sunday, while Real Madrid will look to keep the pressure on the Spanish leader with a victory at home to Hercules.
Barcelona, buoyed by its 3-1 Champions League win over Arsenal, has won four straight league games ahead of a difficult away match.
Madrid trails the two-time defending champions by seven points but is coming off perhaps its best performance of the season at Racing Santander, where Cristiano Ronaldo's absence was hardly missed in a 3-1 victory.
With a Champions League match against Lyon looming next week, the Portugal forward is expected to miss Saturday's game.

At least he speaks his mind 🙂 unlike these others. Common if you go for A specific team then stick with them and make sure you talk crap about the other clubs. Thats what we are suppose to do on the threads lol
