Felix Magath cooled talk he may soon lose his job after Schalke's win over Valencia earned them a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
The Royal Blues beat Valencia 3-1 on Wednesday night and 4-2 on aggregate to ensure their name would figure among the top-eight clubs in Europe when the draw for the next round takes place on March 18, yet speculation suggests Magath may no longer be in charge when that comes around.

Reports in Germany had claimed that Schalke bosses have already decided to part company with Magath in the summer at the latest whereas he could even be relieved of his duties as soon as this weekend if his side does not win in the Bundesliga against Eintracht Frankfurt.
But Magath is ignoring the rumours and, after guiding Schalke into the final of the DFB-Pokal last week, he is looking to do the same in the Champions League.
"We don't need to take any notice of the speculation," he said. "The truth is on the pitch.
"Nobody has spoken to me and I still have a contract until 2013 so this is not even an issue.
"We have shown that we find it easier to play against teams who are technically strong.
"I am proud that we have been able to knock out a top Spanish side."

Emery saddened at 'unjust' defeat

Valencia coach Unai Emery called his side's Champions League exit at the hands of Schalke as "disappointing", "unjust" and "incomprehensible".
Having been held 1-1 at home in the first leg of their last-16 tie, Valencia quickly wiped out Schalke's advantage of an away goal in Wednesday night's second leg when Ricardo Costa headed the Spanish side ahead in the 17th minute.

However, Valencia could not hold onto their lead and Schalke drew level just before the break with a brilliant free-kick from Jefferson Farfan before second-half goals from Mario Gavranovic and Farfan earned the German side a 3-1 win on the night and 4-2 triumph on aggregate.
Emery, whose side had several good chances before Farfan settled the contest with his second goal deep into stoppage-time, said: "The disappointment is huge, similar to the elimination against Atletico last year (Europa League quarter-finals). We had high hopes, this was the match we had prepared for and had to win.
"Maybe there have been games in the league where we didn't deserve to win and that good luck deserted us this time.
"With everything in our favour we've ended up losing. It's incomprehensible. At 1-0 up we had the game under control, with chances to hit them on the counter-attack, and then they go and equalise. Then, in the second half, without creating much, they go 2-1 up. Then we have four chances and we don't take any.
"We've been knocked out unjustly, we've missed an opportunity with everything in our favour. It was a game where we had more chances and we lost.
"I went back into the dressing room so disappointed that I couldn't say anything to the players, but I have nothing to blame them for."
Having also been knocked out of the Copa del Rey, Valencia must now switch their full attention to La Liga, where they are currently in third spot, 13 points behind second-placed Real Madrid and four ahead of fourth-placed Villarreal.
Valencia forward Juan Mata said in AS: "We need to continue working, we must continue fighting for third place. Now we have only the league left, we need to keep hold of third place and get directly into the Champions League, which is the objective of the club."

Jefferson Farfan struck twice as Schalke beat Valencia 3-1 in Germany to seal a 4-2 aggregate win in their Champions League last-16 tie.
Valencia, having drawn the first leg 1-1 at home, needed just 17 minutes to cancel out Schalke's away goal when Ricardo Costa headed them in front at the Arena AufSchalke, but the home side turned things around with two goals either side of half-time.

Farfan drew the hosts level with a brilliant 25-yard free-kick in the 40th minute before Mario Gavranovic netted seven minutes into the second half with an effort that sneaked in after hitting both posts.
Then, after Valencia had missed a number of chances to get back into the game and Gavranovic had hit the woodwork twice more, Schalke sealed the victory and their qualification when Farfan netted their third deep into injury-time.
Schalke came into the game in disappointing form and with question marks over the long-term future of coach Felix Magath, and the Gelsenkirchen outfit's fans must have feared things would get even worse as Valencia started well.
In the eighth minute Los Che defender Jeremy Mathieu saw a shot deflected just wide, and then nine minutes later the visitors got themselves in front.
Mehmet Topal did well down the left before firing in a fiercely-struck cross that Costa did well to head past Manuel Neuer at his near post.
Schalke striker Raul had a chance to cancel that goal out almost immediately but he headed wide, and soon after that Valencia almost made it 2-0 but Christoph Metzelder did well to block Aritz Aduriz's effort.

The Royal Blues looked set to go into the break still trailing but, with five minutes to go, they were handed a chance to draw level when they won a free-kick just outside the area.
It was a dangerous position, and Farfan made the most of it as he curled a superb free-kick into the top corner past Vicente Guaita, who got a fingertip to the ball but could not keep it out.
That was a huge boost for Schalke going into the interval, and it got better at the start of the second half as they took the lead.
Guaita could only push a cross down to Farfan inside the area, and although the Valencia goalkeeper managed to save the Schalke goalscorer's resulting shot, the ball fell perfectly for Gavranovic, whose effort hit the inside of the near post, rolled across the line and hit the far post as well before going in.
That goal set Schalke on their way to the last eight, but they had to survive some nervy moments before the end.
Within four minutes of Gavranovic's goal Aduriz had two great chances to score, but he fired his first into the side netting with Neuer out of position and then, after being put clean through, he was denied by a brilliant save by the Schalke goalkeeper and captain.
Tino Costa then missed another good opening for Valencia while Neuer was called into action again to save a Juan Mata shot.
Valencia could not force an equaliser though, and Schalke twice came close to killing the game off late on when Gavranovic hit the woodwork on separate occasions.
The first saw his thunderous drive deflected onto the near post by Guaita, and he then saw a brilliant 35-yard lob hit the Valencia crossbar with Guaita struggling.
Schalke were celebrating a third goal late on though as Farfan broke away before dinking the ball over Guaita to settle the contest.

Tottenham are through to the Champions League quarter-finals after a 0-0 draw against AC Milan in the second leg of their last-16 tie.
Spurs were defending a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Milan but Harry Redknapp had vowed his side would go on the offensive at White Hart Lane to put the tie beyond doubt.

That never quite materialised in truth but Spurs largely kept Milan at bay and survived one or two scary moments to make the last eight in their first season in Europe's premier club competition..
Spurs were on the back foot for the majority of the first half and had William Gallas to thank for keeping them in the match after he hooked off the line after 25 minutes following an error by Heurelho Gomes.
However, the home side looked far more at ease in the second period and had chances to score through Rafael van der Vaart and Peter Crouch before Robinho went close to snatching an away goal for Milan at the death.
Much of the pre-match talk had centred on whether Gareth Bale would be fit enough to start after Redknapp revealed on Tuesday that he was "struggling" to recover from a back injury.
The Spurs boss ended up playing it safe, with the 21-year-old taking a place on the bench and Steven Pienaar preferred down the left flank.
Jermain Defoe's two goals at Wolves were not enough to earn him a starting place, with Redknapp opting to stick with the Crouch and Van der Vaart combination that has worked so well in Europe this year.
Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri named Mathieu Flamini in his side three weeks after he was guilty of committing what Redknapp described as Spurs took only 90 seconds to fashion their first chance, with Van der Vaart toe-poking just wide from 20 yards.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic then threatened at the other end before Crouch thought he should have had a penalty when he appeared to have his shirt pulled by Ignazio Abate, with referee Frank De Bleeckere waving play on.
Despite the quick start from Spurs, Milan soon settled and began to dictate much of the play, with Kevin-Prince Boateng, Robinho, and Clarence Seedorf probing the Spurs defence with searching through-balls.
Gomes saved well from a 25-yard Zlatan Ibrahimovic free-kick before Robinho had a crack at goal with a 30-yard strike that ballooned over the Spurs bar.
Tottenham survived their biggest scare on 25 minutes when Gomes needlessly raced out of his goal to challenge Pato, only to see the Brazilian get to the ball first and feed Robinho, whose deflected shot was superbly hooked off the line by Gallas.
Van der Vaart curled a 25-yard free-kick just over Christian Abbiati's goal moments later but Milan came storming up the other end soon after, with Pato drawing a good save out of Gomes from eight yards.
Milan continued to look the more dangerous of the two teams as the first half neared its end and Gallas did well again to deny Ibrahimovic a chance from inside the box.
Spurs came out for the second half much more confidently, however, with Lennon crossing from the right to Crouch, who was unmarked at the back post but opted to head back into an empty six-yard box when he should have gone for goal.
Marek Jankulovski's reckless late challenge on Aaron Lennon after 47 minutes earned him a booking as Spurs kept up the pressure on the visitors but Milan served them with a reminder of their potency minutes later when Flamini fired a low ball across the box that somehow did not result in a tap-in.
Lennon then skinned his marker to aim a cross towards the back post but the ball fell to Seedorf, who handballed before clearing. The home side appealed for a penalty but the referee waved play on.
Flamini, whose every touch was booed by the home fans, then slid in on Assou-Ekotto in a similar challenge to the one that felled Corluka three weeks ago. He clearly played the ball but the home crowd were nonetheless outraged when he was only shown yellow because of the vigour at which he slid in.
Milan's best chance arrived when Abate released Robinho into the box and he fired low at Gomes. The ball squirmed free to the Brazil striker but the Spurs stopper got a hand to the loose ball and Robinho eventually poked wide.
The home crowd sang for Bale's introduction and it came with 25 minutes left when he replaced Van der Vaart.
Milan, meanwhile, looked to German youngster Alexander Merkel for inspiration as he replaced Boateng with 15 minutes remaining.
Soon after, the visiting fans thought Pato had put Milan back in the tie when he fired towards goal but his shot rippled into the side netting.
Roman Pavlyuchenko came on for Crouch with eight minutes left as Milan looked to grab the opener to take the game into extra time.
Sandro, who had battled well all night, continued to break up play though and Bale's pace ensured that Milan did not over-commit forward.
The home fans' nerves were frayed when Robinho's deflected shot flew just over after a clever one-two with Ibrahimovic in the 92nd minute but Spurs held on to take the tie 1-0 on aggregate.

We can't give them credit, specially by most any non Italian supporter and even more so specially on this site lol!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the condolenses Spider. Though I am disappointed that Milan are done, they were never going to win the CL this year the way they've been playing throughout the competition. I have been able to see my team win quite a few CL titles which is more than most can say lol.......... Maybe next year!!!!!

Rollaround----Gattuso was suspended. I believe he had carded himself into a suspension and then UEFA gave him 4 more on top of that. West Ham will be tough they seem to be hitting somewhat of a stride they have collected 11 pts over there past 6 EPL fixtures which is the same as Spurs and tied for 4th best in the league. So its not going to be a waltz that is for sure.

Mascherano derides Wenger claim

Javier Mascherano has dismissed claims Barcelona beat Arsenal because of the referee and said it would have been "unfair" if they had lost.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger felt his team would have progressed through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League but for the controversial second-half dismissal of Gunners forward Robin van Persie by referee Massimo Busacca.

At that point the score in Tuesday night's second leg at the Nou Camp was 1-1 after a Sergio Busquets own goal had cancelled out Lionel Messi's opener for Barca, leaving Arsenal holding a 3-2 aggregate lead.
However, Barca turned the tie around with two goals in a three-minute spell midway through the second half, Xavi levelling things up on aggregate before Messi's penalty decided things in favour of the Catalan giants.
Wenger was convinced Arsenal would have won the game if Van Persie had not been dismissed, but Mascherano believes Barca were worthy victors and pointed to the statistics to back up his case - Arsenal failed to register a shot all night and had significantly less possession of the ball.
"Wenger has every right to his opinion, but the statistics say that it would have been very unfair if we hadn't qualified having not received a single shot on goal," Mascherano was quoted as saying by Marca.
"It was unusual that it was 1-1 without them having had a shot. Wenger knows how the game was, it's tough to lose and nobody likes to be knocked out."
He added pointedly: "Barca always win due to the referee, never because of their play, not because they had 19 shots on goal, or for having 74% of the possession or completing 900 passes...

"Let's not be hypocrites. We didn't allow them them to breathe, that was the key. We played like Barca and that's why we qualified."
The former Liverpool man added: "I'm proud of how the team stayed true to their philosophy during the game.
"At times when teams have to force the win they lose their identity, but it wasn't like that. It could have been 5-1 or 6-1 because we had very clear goalscoring chances."
Mascherano played his part in the victory with a crucial late intervention to deny Arsenal substitute Nicklas Bendtner a great opportunity, although the Argentinian preferred to praise his team rather than accept individual plaudits.
"I don't feel a saviour. I did my job. We've qualified for what the team has done together and not for any special action.
"For me it's the team and not the individual," he said.

End of story... you ****** can keep saying "wah wah if RvP didnt get sent off wah wah the game would've been different" but remember; your only goal came from one of Barca's mistakes, Bendtner blew a clear chance to seal the game, and last but not least you forget Barca was missing its 2 key defenders... and your attack still got shoved right back up your ****. Barca has won 10 trophies the last 5 yrs. This is a team with a winning mentality and culture. There are absolutely no comparisions between the two teams, as they are miles apart. It is all about winning. Arsenal couldn't string more than 4 passes, posession was 76%/24%, o shots on goal, it was a one sided game. Barca played without their captain pujol and pique, they missed several chances to finish off the game. Arsenal should be dissapointed, instead of buying wengers usual winning, complaining and excuses. Wenger the stuborne manager should be advised to look within and tell us why this team with all the beautiful football hasn't won a trophie in 7 yrs. You have to start from the bottom. Why is it such a big deal to to beat barca when you can't beat birmingham in a mickey mouse cup??

Arsenal played the worst game ever. Barca drilled them like high school kids. They gave arsenal a free goal, and messi got a penalty that wasn't called, red card or no red card there was no way this team was going to come back and beat the best team in the world at the camp nou. Barca outplayed and, outclassed arsenal, not only in this game but all the 5 games they have played, since 2005. Arsenal couldn't win the micky mouse cup agaist birmingham, were leading 4-0 against newcastle, when newcastle came back and almost won the game, arsenal couldn't score against sutherland. This is a team with no leadership, maturity, confidence, and determination. They have never won a trophie in 7 years, so they don't know what winning is. As for barca ,they are the best team in the world,

I am a huge Barca fan but I must say that was a bad red card. Over 100,000 cheering fans in the crowd makes it almost impossible to hear the whistle. At least give him the benefit of a doubt. Having said that, I don't think it would have mattered. The result was inevitable. Arsenal came out for a tie playing with too much defense. Barcelona scored 4 goals including Arsenal's lone score. Consider it a gift from Barcelona. Without it what else can can you possibly achieve with 1 shot on goal and 2 corners, one of which was another missed call that should have given a goal kick to Barcelona. Barca played without Puyol and Pique. They missed countless goals. Arsenal should consider themselves lucky. It could have been much worse.

I HOPE MASCHERANO KEEPS SEEING LIMITED PLAYING TIME AT BARCA. THATS WHAT HE GETS FOR TURNING HIS BACK ON HIS FORMER CLUB. PEOPLE CAN SAY WHAT THEY WANT, BUT BARCA DOMINATED AT THE EMIRATES FIRST HALF AND FIZZLED OUT SECOND HALF. WHO IS TO SAY THE EXACT SAME THING WAS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN AT THE CAMP? WE WILL NEVER KNOW BECAUSE OF AN IDIOTIC CALL IN AN IMPORTANT GAME. BARCA PLAYED WELL NO DOUBT, BUT GAME WITHOUT A DOUBT WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT HAD ARSENAL KEPT 11 PLAYERS. I am a Gunners fan. That said, it was difficult to see them lose. Barca is a quality team. Decisions on the pitch are sometimes questionable and it happens to the best of teams. Diarby and Rosc are not in my opinion the two who should be partnered with Cesc. Song is better on the ball. The defense needs work and a quality striker would have helped as well. Arsene is not Jose.
Last year Inter did not take the game to Barca, instead they played the best defensive game on the planet and had a set strategy for scoring when they had a strong hold on the ball. It appeared that AW attempted to use the same strategy to overcome Barca this year. The Argentinian was correct, Barca did their job. The Gunners were outclassed and are thus through to the quarterfinals.

Sir Alex Ferguson says Arsenal have "rearranged the pecking order" after admitting they pose a real threat to Manchester United's title hopes.
Ferguson, speaking for the first time since the media blackout that followed Sunday's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, said Arsene Wenger's side had rejuvenated the rivalry that existed between the two sides when they were routinely considered the only plausible champions.

Following their Anfield reverse, the Red Devils are now just three points clear at the summit of the Premier League having played one game more.
The sides also meet in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday, prompting Ferguson into an assessment of the Gunners' form.
Ferguson said: "Last season they (Arsenal) faded around the February to March period to leave Chelsea and ourselves in a two-horse race that saw us pipped at the post by a point.
"I think most pundits expected to see something similar this season, plus a challenge from Spurs and Manchester City to make it even more difficult for Arsenal to get back up to the top.
"But Arsene Wenger and his players have rearranged the pecking order somewhat to come storming through to lie in second place.
"Clearly they represent the main danger to us achieving our ambitions in a revival of the rivalry of a few years ago, and I am sure they regard us as the major threat to their hopes."
As for the Liverpool match, the Scot held his hands up and admitted United deserved to lose to their rivals.
"I have no excuses for the poor performance at Liverpool, who were the better team and deserved their win," Ferguson said.
"I was disappointed because we didn't perform to the level I expect and which, to be fair, we generally achieve."

I wonder if Ferguson will play the A team or B on Saturday. Usually he doesn't care all that much for the FA Cup, but he may fear the psychological effects of an Obertan squad losing a third game in a row (and to Arsenal). And considering how Obertan, Bebe and the rest of the lads almost couldn't get by Crawley Town, we may see Rooney, Berbatov, Vidic, etc.
