Updated Mar 1, 2011 11:17 AM ET Bayern Munich boss Louis van Gaal has added extra spice to Wednesday's DFB-Pokal semi with Schalke by declaring his interest in Manuel Neuer.
The Dutchman wants the Schalke goalkeeper to compete for the number one spot at the Allianz Arena with current first choice Thomas Kraft. Van Gaal has put his faith in Kraft ahead of veteran Hans-Jorg Butt since the winter break, but has warned the youngster to accept strong competition for his place next season or leave. "I think we could do with Manuel Neuer," he said in the Bild newspaper. "A top team needs two top players in every position - in goal is no different. If Kraft can not accept this, then I recommend he leaves." Neuer has long been linked with a move to Bayern, with his contract with the Royal Blues running until 2012. Kraft's deal at Bayern expires at the end of the season and he has so far reportedly been unable to agree a new deal. Neuer brushed off Van Gaal's comments as mind games ahead of the match. "That is only a little trick before the semi-final," he said.

schalke_usa ,are you just rambling?Van Gaal has said it is good for a big club to have 2 good players in every position ,so Kraft must be ready to accept the challenge or leave .whether he said it or not that is the case ,in the contrary Van Gaal is bold enough to give young players their chance if they seize it the better if not they will be shown the door.As for Magath what has he done beside lifting your club out of bankruptcy ,i understand you are impatient but give him some credit ,he is a very good coach ,you expect a better rank in the league but you are playing a cup final and have a chance to reach the1/4 finals of the champios league
I'm puzzled as to why van Gaal would speak so flippantly of Thomas Kraft, suggesting that if he doesn't like FC Bayern pursuing Manuel Neuer, then he should leave the club. What's van Gaal going to do if Man Utd signs Neuer and Kraft decides not to stay at FC Bayern after being treated so poorly by the coach?! Interesting times in Bavaria.
For those FC Bayern supporters who dislike van Gaal so much, he's still a million times better of a coach than Felix Magath.
I don't think Manuel Neuer will go to FC Bayern. Manchester United is his most probabe future home. As much as I don't want to see Neuer leave FC Schalke 04, I can't blame him for abandoning a sinking ship. Felix Magath has really done a number on the once proud club from Gelsenkirchen. Neuer deserves better than a worthless coach like Magath.
Yeah I have that same feeling, or he will leave on his own accord. I fully expect a new coach next season unless we win the CL and even then it's 50/50
Trying to buy a keeper to deflect any blame for his woefulness as a coach..
If I was a betting person I'd wager all I have that Van Gaal will be fired at the end of the season.
I don't like the fact that van Gaal basically is telling his keeper that his days are numbered and if he doesn't like it goodbye. I'm not sure if that's exactlly something you want to say to ur young keeper before a big game.
Hey Brazz, did you say something? I couldnt here you with my headphones on.lol
I think BvB has both hands on the trophy. They did a couple of weeks ago. They just are too hard to stop right now and good for them. They certainly deserve it. Top class trainer, top class work ethic. top class players. Not 1 superstar and they flatten almost everyone in their path. The only thing better than being a BvB supporter is being a Bayern supporter!!!!!! Win or lose baby I am a lifer!
@Donau, but on the otherside of Klose heading to BvB he will get the play time he deserves. Just hopefully he can stay fit.
Updated Feb 28, 2011 10:34 AM ET Werder Bremen midfielder Torsten Frings has announced his intention to retire from the game in the summer. The former Germany international is out of contract at the end of June and he has made up his mind not to seek an extension but, instead, to hang up his boots for good.
The home of the best LIVE soccer and rugby awaits at FoxSoccer.tv -- don't miss a second of the action.
"I will be 35," he told the Kreiszeitung Syke newspaper. "I don't want to carry on, I have had enough." He could yet be talked into playing for another year if he feels Bremen really want him to keep playing for them, but he rates the chances of that happening as slim. "We will hold some talks so my decision is not yet 100% certain, but there is a clear tendency towards retiring," he added. "I have been thinking long and hard about this. People keep on asking me whether I will be staying or not." Frings has played a total of 392 Bundesliga matches for Bremen, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and was capped 79 times by Germany. He was suspended for Sunday's 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen, but has otherwise been a regular in the Bremen team this season.

If Ballack does come back I honestly believe Loew will be using him as a sub. Oezil and Khedira help quicken the pace and there is NO WAY that Basti will be benched so where else would Ballack go? Super sub is all that I can see him doing.
Hope you are right. I am shocked at how fast Ballack has fallen. His injury before the World Cup turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Low was able to use Muller and Ozil in a much more up-tempo style. Khedira also got a lot more playing time and performed well.
@Steve, I think you are good for awhile yet. Miro wants to break that record and I think he also wants to play 1 more WM so I think we will get to see him for a few more years yet. Ballack on the other hand, I see him retiring before Miro and not by choice either. I think a few more injuries will end him.
He was a warrior and represented himself with class for the National Team. Torsten Frings will be missed and remembered. I am afraid another of my National Team heroes is next - the great Miroslav Klose.
I want to echo what SchalkeUSA said about Frings, the guy was a true warrior and always came ready for the fight. He did not have the most unbelievable skills, but what he lacked in skills he made up for in grit and hard work, he was a team player and always worked hard for the team.
I still wonder many times to this day what would have happened if he had been able to play in that big semifinal in the World Cup in 06 against Italy???
Good luck to Frings in the future. Even though I've never liked his club, I've often enjoyed seeing him in the lineup of the German national team as he was always good for a fight and worked hard for the team. He did a lot of good things for die Mannschaft through the years, so I wish him well.
Updated Mar 2, 2011 6:15 PM ET Nicklas Bendtner hit a hat-trick as Arsenal beat Leyton Orient 5-0 at Emirates Stadium to set up an FA Cup quarter-final at Manchester United. The Gunners showed no sign of a Carling Cup hangover as Orient were brushed aside in clinical fashion.
Marouane Chamakh set Arsene Wenger's men on their way in the seventh minute with his first goal since the end of November, before Bendtner's well-taken double put the result beyond doubt ahead of the interval. The Denmark striker completed his treble from the penalty spot, with full-back Gael Clichy netting a rare effort with 15 minutes left. Only Tomas Rosicky, who would later become another untimely Arsenal injury casualty as he limped off, remained from the starting XI left crestfallen at Wembley. Teenage defender Ignasi Miquel made his first home appearance and 19-year-old winger Connor Henderson a senior debut. Centre-back Laurent Koscielny was, officially at least, rested because of a minor hamstring problem, while goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny - the other guilty party in Sunday's dramatic and costly mix-up which gifted the Blues a last-gasp winner - warmed the bench. Samir Nasri, Jack Wilshere and Andrey Arshavin were also among the substitutes should they be needed to help get the job done at the second time of asking. The replay - earned after Orient forced a last-minute equaliser at Brisbane Road 10 days ago - was expected to bring in around £700,000 for the League One side, who are set for a trip to Las Vegas on chairman Barry Hearn at the end of a season which could yet finish with promotion via the play-offs.
The Os were cheered on by some 9,000 fans, most having travelled more in hope than genuine expectation of a cup shock which would be off the scale compared to Sunday's result at Wembley. Chamakh was deployed in Robin van Persie's role at the spearhead of the attack, with the Dutchman set to be out for around a month with a knee injury picked up in scoring the equaliser against Birmingham. The Moroccan settled any early nerves when he put Arsenal ahead from close range. Rosicky darted into the right side of the Orient box before cutting the ball back to the penalty spot, where Chamakh guided a shot into the bottom left corner to take his tally to 12. Orient almost produced a response when Ben Chorley, a former Arsenal trainee, sent an angled volley goalwards from a corner which was deflected over. The away fans behind the far Clock End thought Alex Revell had steered in an equaliser from Charlie Daniels' cross, but the ball only rippled the side-netting. Arsenal were soon back on the offensive and doubled their lead on the half-hour when Bendtner sent Kieran Gibbs' cross back into the top-left corner with a looping header from 12 yards. It was 3-0 in the 43rd minute when Bendtner cut in from the left and curled a low strike into the far corner, for his sixth goal of the season. Abou Diaby should have made it four at the start of the second half when he waltzed through the Orient defence, but dragged his low shot wide. Orient refused to lay down and caused more than one moment of panic in the hosts' six-yard box. However, Arsenal were then awarded a penalty on 61 minutes when Gibbs was tripped by Revell. During the break in play, Rosicky, who had picked up an injury, was replaced by Nasri. Bendtner smashed the spot-kick into the bottom-left corner to complete his hat-trick, a second for Arsenal. Wilshere and Clichy were given run-outs for the final 24 minutes, replacing Bendtner and Diaby. The French full-back drilled number five into the bottom corner for his first goal since November 2008 as Arsenal booked a mouth-watering clash against their Premier League title rivals at Old Trafford on March 12.
Updated Mar 2, 2011 6:16 PM ET Nicklas Bendtner's hat trick helped Arsenal rout Leyton Orient 5-0 in a fifth-round FA Cup replay and Manchester City eased past Aston Villa 3-0 to also make the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Marouane Chamakh and Gael Clichy were the other scorers at Emirates Stadium for Arsenal, which bounced back from its surprise 2-1 defeat to Birmingham in Sunday's League Cup final to set up a last-eight match against Manchester United on March 12. City will host second-tier side Reading a day later after the Premier League big spenders brushed past a weakened Villa side thanks to goals by Yaya Toure, Mario Balotelli and David Silva.
Stoke-West Ham and Birmingham-Bolton are the other fixtures in the quarterfinals of the famous knockout competition. Orient, which plays in England's third tier and was the lowest-ranked club left in the FA Cup, earned a deserved 1-1 draw in the first game between the teams on Feb. 20, but the replay couldn't have been more one-sided. "It was important that we had a response tonight after what happened at the weekend (against Birmingham) and we did it in a professional way," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. Chamakh netted his 12th goal of the season - and first since the end of November - when he slipped home a neat finish in the seventh minute following a surging run from Tomas Rosicky, who went off with a concussion in the second half after catching an elbow to the head. Wenger said the veteran Czech midfielder was not seriously hurt, meaning he shouldn't join a lengthy Arsenal injury list that already includes Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott, Thomas Vermaelen and Lukasz Fabianski. Bendtner opened his account for the night by looping a header into the corner from left back Kieran Gibbs' cross in the 30th and made it 3-0 by curling in a low finish from 20 yards in the 43rd. The Denmark striker, playing out on the right wing, completed the second hat trick of his Gunners career from the penalty spot, converting low to his left after Gibbs was fouled by Alex Revell. Clichy, on as a substitute for Gibbs, drilled in the fifth goal to wrap up victory in the 75th.
The quarterfinal against United at Old Trafford will pit the top two teams in the Premier League together and will come at a crunch time in the season, with both sides involved in Europe and with designs on three trophies. "It's difficult to say how we will approach the game," Wenger said. "For us it will come after the game against Barcelona (in the second leg of the last 16), for them it's before their Champions League match (against Marseille)." With City facing lower-league opposition in the last eight, the FA Cup may be the team's best opportunity to win a first piece of major silverware since a League Cup success in 1976. "We knew before the game we have a great chance in the FA Cup to go back to Wembley after a long time," City defender Pablo Zabaleta said. "We have great quality in the team. We have players that can score at any time and that is very important in a long season." The northwest team was helped by Villa making eight changes to the side that was in starting action in the Premier League at the weekend. Toure pounced quickest when Patrick Vieira's header hit the shoulder of Ciaran Clark and popped up invitingly for the Ivory Coast midfielder to ram home from six yards in the fifth. Toure turned provider in the 25th, passing to Balotelli who produced a superb finish with the inside of his right foot from 15 yards for his 10th goal in 18 games since his summer move from Inter Milan. Silva, back in City's side after missing the league draw at home to Fulham because of injury, completed the win by shooting a low, left-footed drive past Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel. "We have to acknowledge that we were beaten by a team that is better than ours at the moment," Villa manager Gerard Houllier said. "I admit that we didn't hurt them enough (but) the score is very flattering for them." City is third in the Premier League and has also made it through to the last 16 of the Europa League.
