The referee Mark Clattenburg, right, speaks to Wayne Rooney after he elbowed Wigan's James McCarthy, left. Photograph: Andrew Yates/AFP/Getty Images Wayne Rooney could miss Manchester United's key Premier League games at Chelsea and Liverpool this week if the Football Association charges the England international with violent conduct for an elbow on Wigan Athletic's James McCarthy.
The United striker raised an arm into the side of the Wigan midfielder's head when the pair collided in the ninth minute of the 4-0 win for the league leaders on Saturday. Although the referee, Mark Clattenburg, dealt with the incident at the time, Rooney is facing a possible three-match suspension under the FA's fast-track disciplinary system that would come into effect before Tuesday night's contest at Stamford Bridge.
Clattenburg deemed the offence worthy only of a free-kick to Wigan and a warning to Rooney at the DW Stadium. However, the referee, once he has reviewed the incident, can recommend further retrospective punishment if he deems he did not see it properly. He is due to submit his official match report to the FA before 4pm on Monday.
Should it receive such advice, the FA would charge Rooney with violent conduct and give the striker until 6pm on Tuesday to respond. The 25-year-old would commence a three-match suspension immediately if he accepts the ruling, keeping him out of the league games against Chelsea, Liverpool on Sunday and the FA Cup sixth-round tie with either Arsenal or Leyton Orient.
Rooney would still be available to face Chelsea if he contests the charge as the FA's disciplinary panel would meet after the game. However, as Rio Ferdinand discovered last season when he challenged a retrospective charge of violent conduct for striking the Hull City player Craig Fagan, that action could bring a further one-match ban for making a frivolous appeal. That would raise the prospect of Rooney receiving a four-match suspension to include league games against Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United.
Sir Alex Ferguson said "there is nothing in it" after the game on Saturday and accused the media of exaggerating the incident on account of the high-profile United player involved. The Wigan manager, Roberto Martínez, however, believes McCarthy – who was also on the receiving end of a late foul by Paul Scholes – was deliberately targeted by United at the DW Stadium and given scant protection by Clattenburg.
Martínez claimed: "When you're playing in any football game you know who are the key players of the opposition and I think when you've got that sort of experience you can try to get a reaction from a player, you can put him off. When you've got two different players affecting the same player it's quite clear that you're using your experience to do that. I think that's very clever play. It's just that you've got a referee out there who needs to protect players and unfortunately we couldn't get that protection."

Barcelona yapiga 3-0, kuikimbia Real Madrid kileleni Send to a friend Sunday, 27 February 2011 21:18

MADRID, Hispania

Ashley Cole's airgun stunt is a symptom of the disorder at Chelsea

The defender's 'accidental' shooting of a student had a secondary victim in the shape of the manager, Carlo Ancelotti

  • Ashley-Cole-Chelsea-FC-007.jpg
The Chelsea defender Ashley Cole shot a student, Tom Cowan, with an airgun at the club's Cobham training ground. Photograph: Tom Hevezi/AP It was not the sort of rejuvenation Chelsea need. Instead of regaining his youth, Ashley Cole merely behaved like an adolescent. In fact the description is an unwarranted slur on countless teenagers who know better than to point an airgun at someone and pull the trigger. The defender backed a hunch that it was not loaded.
In consequence he shot Tom Cowan, a sports science student who is spending a year with the club. His wound was still in need of treatment a couple of days later. Cole can be castigated for a reckless stupidity that as a 30-year-old he ought to have outgrown. It is also true that football has a knack of allowing people to hold on to immaturity, as if it promised eternal youth on the pitch. Men are always "the lads" in post-match interviews.
Perhaps the vivacity of football depends on that outlook, but it does not relieve Chelsea of responsibility for events at their Cobham training ground. The episode has ramification because of the impression it conveys of how the club handle their affairs. The incident had a secondary victim in the shape of the manager, Carlo Ancelotti.
Is it, for instance, feasible that such an episode would take place at Manchester United under the regime of Sir Alex Ferguson? There is much in which Ancelotti can take pride since Chelsea are, after all, holders of the Premier League and FA Cup trophies, but a more profound authority seems to have been lacking. As a worldly individual, who has already seen so much at Milan, he has an unruffled manner.
Ancelotti is not expected to stay in the post beyond this season since the quest for a fourth‑place finish is not what the owner, Roman Abramovich, had in mind when funding Chelsea, over the years, with £726m in loans that the club are not required to repay. The Cole issue will have been an unnecessary reminder of the change that has become essential at Stamford Bridge.
Silverware has come since José Mourinho departed, but none of his successors has exercised such authority, although Guus Hiddink might have acquired equivalent power if his stay had not been in the capacity of gilded caretaker. Cole's conduct simply confirms the urgency of establishing a credible regime.
While the squad is not uniformly old, it needs to be refreshed. That process is only beginning, although the sums produced to buy David Luiz and Fernando Torres illustrate that Abramovich retains a keen interest in this piece of his portfolio. He might be a touch late in proving that commitment, and there had always been a likelihood that the side could not sustain the verve with which they began this campaign.
Cole's misconduct could presumably have happened in years gone by, but it has occurred at a moment when it will be taken as a symptom of mayhem at the core of the club. The disorder is severe enough to put in doubt Chelsea's qualification for the Champions League, since they are presently fifth in the Premier League, behind Tottenham Hotspur.
Chelsea do happen to be better placed presently than any other English club in the Champions League, following the 2-0 win over FC Copenhagen in which Nicolas Anelka supplied the goals. At least they made the most of their opponents' lack of match practice following a winter break. Expertise told then, but more will be called for in the Premier League, where Chelsea play Manchester United at home on Tuesday .
The need to assert themselves ought to ensure that Ferguson's team are confronted by a severe test. Beyond that, Chelsea have to rebuild a reputation for authority while they allow Torres and Luiz time to integrate themselves at Stamford Bridge. The three fixtures before the trip to Copenhagen comprised a home defeat to Liverpool and a pair of draws. There was just a single goal for Ancelotti's men in that sequence.
The win in Denmark could have done Chelsea some good, but the accounts of Cole's behaviour convey an impression of irresponsibility at a club in danger of drifting. The left-back's conduct is the principal issue, but the timing of it was also harmful. At least there is an opportunity against United to create a wave of euphoria that washes away the club's deep concerns for an evening.

...Yanga waivamia kambini

Ashley Cole air rifle claim prompts police investigation

Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole said to have accidentally fired at Loughborough sports science intern at training ground

    Ashley-Cole-007.jpg
Chelsea defender Ashley Cole accidentally shot a club intern with an air gun, newspapers report. Photograph: Tom Hevezi/AP Police are to investigate reports that Ashley Cole accidentally shot and wounded a 21-year-old student with an air rifle at Chelsea football club's training ground.
A Surrey police spokesman confimed that the force would be in touch with the club after a report that the England international fired the weapon at the man at close range on Sunday last week at the training facility at Cobham.
"We can confirm that ... we will be contacting the club to establish whether any criminal offence has been committed," said a police spokesman, adding that officers would interview "whoever runs the training establishment at Cobham".
The club said it was taking "appropriate action" in light of the report, which appeared in the News of the World.
The Chelsea and former Arsenal left-back was said to have fired a high-powered air rifle at Tom Cowan, a Loughborough sports science student on a year's internship at the west London club.
The incident was reported to have taken place in the dressing room as Cole was "larking around" with the rifle some 24 hours after Chelsea's FA Cup fourth-round defeat by Everton.
An "insider" told the News of the World that Cowan screamed in agony and went into shock after being hit in the side by a pellet from the .22 calibre air rifle, which is the most powerful gun that can legally be owned in Britain without a licence.
Cowan was reportedly given treatment by the club's in-house medical team. Two days later, however, Cowan needed further treatment, it was claimed.
Cole reportedly brought the gun – which had a muzzle and nightscope – into the training ground hidden inside a box. He apparently did not realise the weapon was loaded.
Cowan's father, Ronald, was said to be "furious" about the incident. Chelsea bosses were said to have held a three-hour meeting with the Cowans last Wednesday.
Cole, who reportedly earns £110,000 a week – £5,720,000 a year – has played since the incident, in Chelsea's 2-0 victory at Copenhagen in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie last Tuesday. Chelsea are due to play Manchester United on Tuesday.
It was claimed that sources close to Cole, 30, said the gun was not his and that the student had suffered "just a scratch and was not seriously hurt". The source insisted the incident had been "blown out of all proportion".
A Chelsea statement read: "We have fully investigated the incident and we are taking appropriate action. We will not be commenting further as it is an internal matter."
Last year, the Chelsea manager, Carlo Ancelotti, hailed Cole – who is the former husband of the Girls Aloud singer and X Factor judge Cheryl Cole – as the finest left-back in the world.
He said the defender was a role model for all aspiring footballers. He added: "He is highly motivated, a very good player and a very good professional. I think everyone who appreciates football should appreciate him because he is also a very fair player. He never shouts at referees or makes bad tackles on opponents. On the pitch he is an example."

London. Former Tottenham defender Dean Richards died Saturday after a long-term illness. He was 36.
Tottenham confirmed the news in a statement that didn't specify the exact cause of death.

The center back made only 81 appearances during an injury-plagued four years for Spurs. Following dizzy spells and headaches, Richards was forced to retire in 2005 at the age of 30 after being told he had an "abnormality on the brain."

He collected on a 2 million-pound (then $3.5 million) insurance policy in 2006.
The 8.1 million-pound (then $11.3 million) fee that took Richards to Tottenham from Southampton in 2001 was the highest amount at the time paid for a player who hadn't featured for England.

Substitute Jonas scored his first goal for Valencia in a come-from-behind 2-1 victory at Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish league on Sunday.
Jonas, who led the Brazilian league in scoring before moving to Valencia in January, slotted home in the 81st minute from inside the box after goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz had failed to hold on to Tino Costa's long-range shot.
The win allowed Valencia to open up a four-point advantage in third place over Villarreal, which earlier rallied for a 2-2 draw at Racing Santander.

Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita was troubled by Fernando Llorente throughout the match, the Bilbao striker forcing an early save before scoring his 14th goal of the season. The Spain striker received the ball inside the box and held off defender David Navarro before turning to poke it home in the 14th minute.
Valencia had two penalty shouts waved away on a rainy night at the San Mames Stadium before Iraizoz denied Pablo Hernandez's long-range blast in the 45th minute in a match of relentless chances.
Llorente terrorized Valencia's defense - which was without Portugal fullback Miguel, who is serving out a club-imposed ban - and was denied from another shot in the 64th.
Valencia's pressure finally paid off in the 71st. Bruno Saltor sent Joaquin Sanchez speeding down the right, and the Valencia winger picked out Juanma Mata at the far post with a perfect cross pass for the equalizing goal.
After Brazilian striker Jonas put the visitors ahead, Guaita denied Igor Gabilondo and Llorente before Gabilondo fired a rising shot just wide of post.
While Valencia picked up its eighth win in 10 games, Bilbao endured a third straight loss but stayed sixth in the last European spot - two points behind Espanyol and three more than Sevilla.
Substitute Nilmar scored an injury-time equalizer as a lackluster Villarreal managed a 2-2 draw at Santander.
Brazil striker Nilmar jumped toward goal to help nudge a deflected corner over the goal line in the second minute of injury time after Giovani Dos Santos' 68th-minute goal had appeared to give Santander a third straight win since coach Marcelino Garcia Toral's arrival.
Pedro Munitis found Dos Santos in stride and the Mexico forward shot low past goalkeeper Diego Lopez, who made a number of important saves as Villarreal salvaged a point at El Sardinero Stadium.
Ariel Nahuelpan gave the hosts the lead after just three minutes when the Algerian striker raced into the area to head Pablo Pinillos' centering pass into goal.
Villarreal labored to a Europa League win over Napoli on Thursday and the team appeared drained from that physical match as it struggled to find its rhythm with Cani's shot on goal its only attempt of the first half.
Substitute Marco Ruben pulled Villarreal even after guiding Jose Manuel Catala's cross into goal with a 66th-minute header.

After Dos Santos replied with his first Santander goal, both Lopez and Villarreal goalkeeper Antonio Rodriguez made saves down the stretch before a frantic finish paid off for the visitors, who still slipped to a fourth domestic game without a win.
"It was a very difficult, very open game," said Villarreal coach Juan Carlos Garrido, who was sent off during the second half. "We kept a cool head."
Earlier, Felipe Caicedo scored the winner as Levante beat Osasuna 2-1 for its fourth win in five games.
The Ecuador striker took advantage of goalkeeper Ricardo Lopez's hesitation in the 50th for his 10th goal of the season.
Walter Pandiani headed Osasuna ahead after 41 minutes before Sergio Ballesteros struck the equalizer three minutes later at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium.
Levante moved one point above Osasuna - which hasn't won away in more than one year - and three clear of Zaragoza, which occupies the last relegation place.
Also, Getafe drew 0-0 at Hercules, which has one win in its last six to sit two points above Zaragoza.
Lionel Messi scored his league-leading 26th goal Saturday in Barcelona's 3-0 victory at Mallorca, which stretched the two-time Spanish champion's lead in the standings to seven points after Real Madrid drew 0-0 at Deportivo La Coruna.
The 25th-round of games ends Monday when Almeria plays Malaga in a match-up of the bottom two.
In Saturday's other games, it was: Espanyol 4, Real Sociedad 1; Atletico Madrid 2, Sevilla 2; and Sporting Gijon 0, Zaragoza 0.

Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente hopes the comforts of home will help his side beat Valencia in Sunday night's Primera Division clash.

Bilbao are looking to bounce back from successive away defeats when they host third-placed Valencia at San Mames.
Athletic had powered their way up to fifth spot on the back of a four-match winning streak, but losses at Real Mallorca and Barcelona in their last two outings have clipped the Basque side's wings a little.
They remain in fifth, but are now eight points behind Villarreal in fourth and only four ahead of fellow Europa League hopefuls Sevilla and Real Sociedad, who are in seventh and eighth place respectively.
Joaquin Caparros' side are now back at home for the visit of Valencia, though, and with nine wins from 12 games at San Mames this season, Llorente is in optimistic mood.
"We're playing at home again and we have to show that we are still strong there. It's not going to be easy but at home I think we can beat them. We need to be strong and aggressive and show from the first minute that Valencia can't think about getting anything out of the game," said Llorente, who also has a personal reason for wanting to do well this weekend.
The Spain international turns 26 today, while tomorrow is his mother's birthday and he admits it would be the "best present" if they can down in-form Valencia.
Los Che make the trip to the north of Spain having lost just once in their last 14 league matches, which was a 2-0 defeat at Real Madrid almost three months ago.
Unai Emery's side did suffer a disappointing result last weekend as they were held 0-0 at home by lowly Sporting Gijon, but despite that Valencia maintained their two-point lead over Villarreal in the race for third spot.
Valencia have some important fixtures coming up, with Barcelona visiting the Mestalla on Wednesday while they also have the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Schalke the week after next.
Striker Roberto Soldado insists they are not looking beyond Sunday's game though, saying: "In March we have five games in a very short space time, it's going to be very intense but we are taking it step by step.
"On Sunday, at San Mames, we must give it everything on the pitch before thinking about the Barcelona game.
"Winning at San Mames is crucial to getting into the Champions League. We can increase our advantage over Athletic and their morale would be damaged by losing at home to a direct rival.
"We know it's an important game against a very strong opponent, who are fighting for the same as us. It would give them hope if the beat us."

At this rate, Arsenal may never win

WEMBLEY, England (AP)

For months - it seems like years - Arsene Wenger has sung the same refrain, as if repeating the words often enough might actually make them true.
His youthful Arsenal team so carefully and patiently nurtured is finally coming to the boil, Wenger insisted. The boys were becoming men and this, at long last, could be the season when the London side actually wins something more than mere applause for its often beautiful, but at times frustratingly ineffective, football.
Then, in the space of a few seconds on Sunday, a giant but otherwise not particularly dangerous striker from Serbia made all of Wenger's talk look like nothing more than hot air and wishful thinking.
Nikola Zigic's glancing backheader caught Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and defender Laurent Koscielny in that horrible no-man's land between ineptitude and indecision.
The pair's blunder in the 89th minute of a final that Arsenal should and could have won gifted the League Cup to Birmingham City. Not since 1963 had it won a trophy of any kind. Hardly believing their luck, Birmingham's blue-clad fans roared when Obafemi Martins latched onto the Arsenal defensive pair's catastrophic mistake to score the winner.
''People were crying. It was stunning, stunning,'' said the long-suffering team's manager, Alex McLeish. ''For the fans, it means everything. They have suffered so long. It's been what, 60 years? I could see the pain etched in their faces.''
For this defeat, Wenger shares some of the blame.
As loudly as the Frenchman has been insisting that his team is finally showing mettle and maturity, his critics have been warning that his defense, at times, still looks as fragile as blancmange.
They cautioned that Arsenal should invest in a world-class 'keeper to guard its goal while Wenger's quick and cunning midfielders and forwards run rings around opponents up front.
Wenger didn't listen. His trust in 20-year-old Szczesny looks sadly misplaced now.
So, too, does his reliance on young defenders like Koscielny, who two years ago was playing lower-league football in France. The 25-year-old is much improved after he was thrown in at the deep end with Arsenal, helping to fill in the gap left by the long-term injury to the more reassuring Thomas Vermaelen. Still, the defensive partnership of Koscielny and Johan Djourou that Wenger played for the Wembley final is not the solid foundation Arsenal needs at the back.
When at its best, Arsenal can deceive one into believing that it is capable of beating anyone and of great things. The world's best side, Barcelona, learned that to its cost in a 2-1 loss on Feb. 16 at the Londoners' Emirates stadium. Because it plays beautiful football more effectively than Arsenal, the Spanish side will still be favored to win when the two meet again in Barcelona on March 8, with a place in the Champions League quarterfinals as the prize.
But, against lesser teams, Arsenal can be ordinary, as against Birmingham. That is especially true when Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal's captain and conductor of its midfield, is missing because of injury, as he was on Sunday. Although Arsenal is not a one-man team, without Fabregas it lacks bite and does not look fully formed.
Arsenal's game-deciding mistake in the 89th minute reeked of naivety. There are many ways to lose a football match but this was cruel in the way it exposed Wenger's oversized faith in players who aren't quite ready, cool-headed or experienced enough.
Birmingham 'keeper Ben Foster had the ball. With the teams deadlocked at one apiece, it was blindingly obvious to everyone in the 88,855-strong crowd that he was going to hoof and hope - loft the ball to the 6-foot, 8-inch Zigic in the expectation that he might use his height advantage to make something of the last-gasp chance.
Somehow, as telegraphed as the tactic was, it still caught Koscielny and Szczesny by surprise. When the ball glanced off the top of Zigic's head, Koscielny got in the way of Szczesny, his 'keeper who otherwise might have caught it and perhaps could have avoided the mix-up by authoritatively yelling, ''MY BALL!''
Instead, it bobbled out of the Polish goalie's hands and landed at the feet of Martins. The Nigerian was never going to squander such a close-range gift.
''The easiest goal I've ever scored,'' he said.
Without naming names, Wenger made clear that Koscielny and Szczesny were at fault.
''A lack of communication and a lack of determination a little bit, as well,'' he said. ''When the ball is in no-man's land, somebody has to take responsibility and go for it.''
The League Cup was always the least important of the four trophies Wenger targeted this season. The Champions League, the FA Cup and the Premier League are more prestigious and, in theory at least, still not out of reach for Arsenal.
But that didn't make the defeat easier. Most of Wenger's players still don't know what it feels like to win a trophy with Arsenal, because they weren't around when the team last did it in 2005. So the idea was that winning the League Cup would give the young team a taste for it and that that would make it want more.
Instead, the wait for Arsenal to live up to its youthful promise goes on. But promise, alone, is no longer enough.
