na Samia Mussa

amka2.gif

Martinez: Rooney should have seen red

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has claimed Wayne Rooney should have been sent off at the DW Stadium.

Rooney caught James McCarthy in the face with his elbow during the opening minutes of Manchester United's 4-0 win at the DW Stadium.
The home fans were incensed but referee Mark Clattenburg took no action, apart from awarding the hosts a free-kick.
Having looked at the incident again, Martinez is convinced his side should have been playing against 10 men.
"I saw the incident clearly and the referee did as well because he gave the free-kick," said Martinez.
"Once you give a free-kick it is quite clear that it is a red card. When you look at the replay, it is quite clear he catches James McCarthy in the face with his elbow.
"If one of my players had done that, I would think he was very lucky to stay on the pitch.
"It is a big call in the game. It is unfortunate because the referee saw it but he didn't feel it was a red card.
"It was not because he was Wayne Rooney. It was an incident in the game. That is it."
Predictably, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson took an alternate view, feeling Clattenburg made the correct call.
"I have had a chance to see it," said the Scot. "There is nothing in it.
"But, what will happen, the question has been asked and because it is Wayne Rooney the press will raise a campaign to get him hung by Tuesday or electrocuted or something like that.
"It is unbelievable. Watch the press. It will be interesting to see it."

You boys are simply a disgrace....Rooney can get a 3 game ban for all I care, doesn't mean United are going to drop points. As someone put it Hernandez is better anyway...how bout hoping your clubs produce good results on the field instead of watching Rooney and United ruin your day...LOL

I hate this guy sometimes because of his behavior. He gets away with a lot of bad things because he plays for MU. The refree will not tells us that he didn't see Rooney elbowing Mccarthy. That should have being a staright red. MU plays urgly football but still wins, I call it luck.

I dont know what happened so quickly between rooney and mccarthy, but I am not sure how anyone can defend the elbow. It was done with clear intent as the ball was nowhere near them. Seemed like a very stupid thing for rooney to do,, maybe he woke up on the wrong side of the hookers bed today

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko insists he will show his true colors once he has fully adapted to the Premier League.
The 24-year-old Bosnian netted a brace during his side's Europa League victory over Aris Salonika in midweek and is beginning to prove his worth following a big-money move from Wolfsburg.

He made the switch to Eastlands from the German outfit in January for £27million and has so far scored four goals in eight appearances.
Dzeko claims there is a lot more still to come and admits he is still learning the ropes in England, as he had to do in the Bundesliga.
"When I first went to Germany I didn't play very well," he told the Daily Mail.
"For about a half a year I didn't do what I can, and I think people must have thought I was hopeless. But then I got used to the league and to the team and then I began to do what I can do.
"I know that I have to do that quicker here, but playing for a big club in the best league in Europe has always been my big ambition - and it's come true.
"It's different and harder than the Bundesliga. You have to always be strong and fight for every ball.
"The referees are different too. They don't whistle as they do in Germany, where every small contact is a foul.
"Away at Notts County [in the FA Cup] it was hard because the pitch was small and it was like a fight for 90 minutes.
"There was no football there, but I know I can play football and I want to show that."
He added: "My whole career has been step by step, so I am used to this process.
"First it was the Bosnian league and then the Czech second league and first league and then Germany and now the best league in the world.
"It has all been gradual, and it seems that it must be step by step for me here too.
"There are a lot of great players here like [Carlos] Tevez, who are doing great things, and I am the new one, so I have to get used to it."
Roberto Mancini's side are gunning for a place in the Premier League's top four this season in a bid to compete in the UEFA Champions League.
Dzeko is determined to take City to Europe's elite club competition and also end the club's long wait for a trophy.
"The coach talks about the mentality and he is right," he remarked. "We have not won anything for 34 years and we must win something to move forward.
"I have played in only six games in the Champions League, but it is something special. Nothing compares with the Champions League.
"It's so different from the Europa League - that can only compare when you get to the semi-final or final, because it only becomes special at that stage."

Hughes lifts lid on City sacking

Mark Hughes has lifted the lid on his shambolic sacking by Manchester City, revealing he was among the last to be told he had lost his job.
It was widely assumed Hughes knew of his fate before the end of what proved to be his last match in charge 14 months ago.
Reports of Roberto Mancini's appointment as his successor emerged at half-time of City's 4-3 Premier League victory against Sunderland, while Hughes even saluted the four corners of Eastlands as he left the field after the game.

But he insists he was simply "covering all eventualities" in response to the fevered speculation over his position and had no idea at that point he had already been given the boot.
Hughes revealed he was only made aware of events 15 minutes after the final whistle, giving further ammunition to those who believe City bungled the entire affair.
"I had a fair idea that something was afoot and something was likely to happen, but I didn't actually know at the end of the game," Hughes said.
"I waved to the crowd and everybody assumed I knew, but I didn't.
"Maybe I was just covering all eventualities and was proved right in the end.
"I found out about a quarter of an hour later."
Hughes continues to maintain he feels no lingering bitterness over his controversial departure.
But as he prepares for his first visit to the City of Manchester Stadium since that fateful night - he takes Fulham to his former club on Sunday - he admits there will be no handshakes with those who plotted his downfall.
Hughes still has plenty of friends at the club, who he plans to greet, but asked if he would avoid the boardroom while there, he replied: "You'd be correct.
"I'm there to do a job and I'd love to come away from there having seen my team play exceptionally well and win the game.
"I don't think I have anything to prove, to be perfectly honest, because I think everybody there understood that I was taking the club in the right direction, the direction it need to be.

The home of the best LIVE soccer and rugby awaits at FoxSoccer.tv -- don't miss a second of the action.

"But they wanted to get there quicker, and with a different profile, and maybe that's the reason I lost my job."
The manner of Hughes' departure means one of those most interesting aspects of Sunday's game will be the reception he receives from the home supporters.
"Many Man City fans have come up to me since I left and said they were disappointed with the way I was taken out of the club, and that I was hard done by," Hughes said.
"I think the vast majority of them felt that way and I appreciated the fact that some have taken the time to say that to me."
City was Hughes' first big job in club management and despite being stung by the experience, he has not been deterred in his quest to coach at the highest level.
"In terms being in charge of a big club, I know I can do the job because I have experienced it," said Hughes, who is among the favourites to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and was also recently linked with Chelsea amid speculation over Carlo Ancelotti's future.
"Irrespective of the circumstances that surrounded my eventual departure, I knew that the things we had put in place and the plan we had would bring success there.
"So it doesn't faze me whatsoever. I understand what it takes to manage a big club and it doesn't faze me at all."

Chelsea have declined to comment on reports that Ashley Cole accidentally shot a work placement student at the club's training ground.

The News of the World claims Cole did not know the .22 air rifle was loaded when he fired at 21-year-old Tom Cowan.
It was reported that the sports sciences student, who is on a one-year work placement at Chelsea, was hit in the side by a lead pellet at the training ground in Cobham.
Chelsea's medical staff reportedly treated the bleeding wound and Cowan did not require hospital treatment.
"We never comment on internal matters," Chelsea said in response to the report.

Real Madrid drew 0-0 at Deportivo La Coruna to slip seven points behind leader Barcelona, which shook off the absence of key players and a recent dip in form to beat Mallorca 3-0 and secure a firm grip on the Spanish league on Saturday.
Lionel Messi, David Villa and Pedro Rodriguez all scored as the Spanish champion put some extra distance between itself and closest rival Madrid, which couldn't break a stubborn defensive Deportivo despite Cristiano Ronaldo and Emmanuel Adebayor both hitting the post on late chances.

Barcelona has 68 points to Madrid's 61 with 13 game to play.
"Obviously it's a step backward," Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas said.
The absence of Xavi Hernandez, Carles Puyol, Daniel Alves and Victor Valdes made little difference at Son Moix Stadium as Barcelona overcame early pressure by the hosts before Messi headed home his league-leading 26th goal in the 38th minute.
Seydou Keita scooped into the area for the Argentina forward, who headed the pass forward before using his head again to guide over goalkeeper Dudu Aouate for his 42nd goal of the season.
Villa reached Sergio Busquets' well-played long-ball before Aouate and after rounding the Israel goalkeeper rolled home his 17th of the season.
Pedro's 13th goal was a long-range shot in the 66th that dipped over Aouate into the top of goal.
"There's still a lot of league left, we still have to go to Valencia, to Villarreal, to the Bernabeu, a lot to go," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said.
Earlier, Atletico Madrid twice rallied to secure a 2-2 draw against Sevilla and Espanyol beat Real Sociedad 4-1 to end a four-game losing streak. Also, Sporting Gijon and Zaragoza drew 0-0 in a match of relegation-threatened teams.
Sevilla scored first at Vicente Calderon Stadium when Alvaro Negredo volleyed a rising blast past goalkeeper David De Gea in the 41st minute.
Koke scored on his Atletico debut after the young forward met Diego Forlan's long ball in the 47th sending a header out of the reach of Javi Varas.
Sevilla was ahead again in the 67th through Ivan Rakitic Jose Antonio Reyes equalized nine minutes later by slipping past the defence before slotting past Varas.
Varas denied Sergio Aguero twice from close range soon after as Atletico avoided slumping to a fifth loss in six. Negredo found the crossbar late as Sevilla stayed five points behind Espanyol.
Espanyol provisionally moved two points ahead of Athletic Bilbao into fifth at the Cornella-El Prat where Luis Garcia found Alvaro Vazquez in the 41st with a quickly taken free kick before his try was helped into goal by defender Deniel Estrada.
Estrada made up for the opener by directing a free kick past goalie Carlos Kameni with his foot two minutes later, but Sergio Garcia put Espanyol ahead for good in the 54th. Jose Callejon and Javier Marquez added the insurance for Espanyol as Sociedad slipped one point behind Sevilla in sixth after its two-game winning run ended.
Sporting stayed one point ahead of Zaragoza, which was in the last relegation place.
In Sunday's other 25th-round of games, it's: Hercules vs. Getafe; Levante vs. Osasuna; Racing Santander vs. Villarreal; and Athletic Bilbao vs. Valencia.
On Monday Malaga plays Almeria.

Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente hopes the comforts of home will help his side beat Valencia in Sunday night's Primera Division clash.

Bilbao are looking to bounce back from successive away defeats when they host third-placed Valencia at San Mames.
Athletic had powered their way up to fifth spot on the back of a four-match winning streak, but losses at Real Mallorca and Barcelona in their last two outings have clipped the Basque side's wings a little.
They remain in fifth, but are now eight points behind Villarreal in fourth and only four ahead of fellow Europa League hopefuls Sevilla and Real Sociedad, who are in seventh and eighth place respectively.
Joaquin Caparros' side are now back at home for the visit of Valencia, though, and with nine wins from 12 games at San Mames this season, Llorente is in optimistic mood.
"We're playing at home again and we have to show that we are still strong there. It's not going to be easy but at home I think we can beat them. We need to be strong and aggressive and show from the first minute that Valencia can't think about getting anything out of the game," said Llorente, who also has a personal reason for wanting to do well this weekend.
The Spain international turns 26 today, while tomorrow is his mother's birthday and he admits it would be the "best present" if they can down in-form Valencia.
Los Che make the trip to the north of Spain having lost just once in their last 14 league matches, which was a 2-0 defeat at Real Madrid almost three months ago.
Unai Emery's side did suffer a disappointing result last weekend as they were held 0-0 at home by lowly Sporting Gijon, but despite that Valencia maintained their two-point lead over Villarreal in the race for third spot.
Valencia have some important fixtures coming up, with Barcelona visiting the Mestalla on Wednesday while they also have the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Schalke the week after next.
Striker Roberto Soldado insists they are not looking beyond Sunday's game though, saying: "In March we have five games in a very short space time, it's going to be very intense but we are taking it step by step.
"On Sunday, at San Mames, we must give it everything on the pitch before thinking about the Barcelona game.
"Winning at San Mames is crucial to getting into the Champions League. We can increase our advantage over Athletic and their morale would be damaged by losing at home to a direct rival.
"We know it's an important game against a very strong opponent, who are fighting for the same as us. It would give them hope if the beat us."
