Pimp your iPhone: 20 essential tips

Apple's iPhone, the handset that almost single-handedly kickstarted the smartphone revolution, is instantly recognisable. Last year we got two new models for the price of one (the 5c and the 5s) and Apple has scheduled an event for next month to show off the latest and greatest edition of its flagship handset. If you don't own an iPhone, you'll know someone who does.

Part of the iPhone's appeal is the ease with which (almost) anyone can use it, tech-savvy teenager or middle-aged luddite. There's plenty going on behind the scenes as well, and you may not realise just how many options and features Apple has packed into the iPhone and iOS 7. We're here to enlighten you with 20 tips that will help you get more out of your handset.

The complex sensors inside your iPhone are designed to detect everything from how fast you're moving to the angle at which you're holding it, so you can quickly switch to landscape mode when you're watching movies or powering through a racing game. At other times, this switching behaviour can be annoying, particularly if you keep activating it accidentally.
iOS includes an orientation lock feature that keeps your iPhone in portrait or landscape mode (whichever it's in at the time) until you unlock it. To enable the feature, swipe up from the bottom of the screen, then tap the Orientation Lock button (a padlock with an arrow around it). Repeat the process if you want to take the lock off again.

The latest version of Apple Maps includes a 3D flyover feature that immerses you in a particular location like never before. It's only available in some large cities, such as London, ... .... ...ooops vipi Dar ... ... but it gives you a much better idea of the urban landscape while you're exploring. When you're zoomed in close enough to a location, you'll see the 3D option appear on the toolbar — tap it and the 3D buildings will appear, if they're available.
The angle of your view is automatically tilted to show off the three-dimensional structures but you can alter this by placing two fingers on the screen and scrolling up or down. All of the usual zooming and panning controls are still available while you're using the 3D view.

If you're the owner of an iPhone 5s rather than an iPhone 5c, you can use the extra power under the bonnet to record slow-motion videos that look great when they're played back. Head into the Camera app and then swipe to the right twice to enter slo-mo mode. You can then record clips as normal using the big red button.
How does it work? Frames are captured four times as quickly as normal, which means when they're played back at normal speed you get a professional-looking slow-motion effect. Whether you're filming a kids' football match or a wildlife documentary you can create some impressive footage using the feature.

Just what exactly are the apps on your phone allowed to do? Every app that you install has a set of basic permissions (access to the Internet and so on) but then must explicitly ask for extra ones — to use your location, for example, or to be able to get at your Camera roll. As time goes on it's easy to forget which apps have permission to do what.
You can check up on your installed apps and revoke permissions if necessary by opening up the Settings app and selecting Privacy. Tap on any of the options on this page, such as Location Services, and you can see which apps have a VIP ticket to use that feature. Use the toggle switches to disable a particular permission for a particular app.

The iPhone's volume up key doubles as a shutter button, which makes the process of taking a picture feel much more like using a normal digital camera rather than a smartphone. It also makes the iPhone slightly easier to use one-handed. You'll need to be in the iPhone's default Camera app to use the feature — some third-party tools support the button, but not all of them.
There's no special configuration required: if you're in the Camera app, you should be able to use the volume up button to snap a photo. The same trick works on the most recent iPads as well; in fact, you should be able to take a photo this way on any iDevice running iOS 5 or later.

Sitting on an aeroplane isn't the only time when you can use Airplane Mode (in the Settings app). It cuts out all communications (like Wi-Fi and mobile network connections) so you can use the Airplane Mode option when you don't want to be disturbed or when you really need to save battery for later in the day. Turning your phone off is another option of course, but Airplane Mode still enables you to access files on your phone and use the camera.
If you need to quickly charge your phone up, put it into Airplane Mode while it's plugged in and the battery level will climb up a little bit faster (because there's no drain from syncing or trying to connect to various networks). It can also work as a quick fix when you can't get a signal and want to 'reboot' the phone's network detection software and start again from scratch.

In some of the Siri promo videos, the cheerful, good-looking people in the world of Apple use the voice assistant to 'text my wife' or 'call dad' with their iPhones. You can explicitly inform Siri about these relationships by activating the app and saying 'Rachel is my wife' or 'Chris is my dad' — this will assign the relevant relationship to the relevant contact.
Press and hold the Home button to bring up Siri as usual and then tell the app who is who. A confirmation message will appear on screen so you can double-check that Siri has understood what you're trying to say and assigned the correct person to the correct spot on your family tree. You can use the same method to label a 'best friend' too.

Sticking with Siri, some of the most useful functions of the all-seeing, all-knowing virtual assistant are related to your home and work locations (remind me to buy some milk when I get home, for example). The app uses the information stored alongside your own contact card to recognise where you live and where you work.
To add or edit these addresses, open up the Contact app and find your own entry in the list. Tap Edit and fill out the home and work addresses accordingly. You can then tell Siri to give you directions to your office, show you the weather conditions back at home, and so on.

If you have a favourite website or two that you'd like to access quickly, then you can place site shortcuts on your home screens alongside the icons that launch your installed apps. Use Safari to browse to the site you want to save, then tap the Share icon (the upward arrow) and choose Add to Home Screen.
Using this trick you can quickly build up a screen of website links that enable you to jump to the pages you visit most often without relying on Safari's bookmark system. To remove a link, tap and hold on it then press the small x icon. The links only work for Safari — it's not possible to configure them for an alternative browser app.

Are your emails lacking a little pizzazz? Do you find that your tweets are usually duller than everyone else's? The iOS keyboard features an extensive set of emoji characters but they're switched off by default — you need to enable them in the Settings app before you can add a bit more flair and variety to the messages you type in any of your iPhone apps.
From the Settings app select General and open up the Keyboard section. Choose Keyboards and then Add New Keyboard — the Emoji option should appear on the subsequent list. To switch between keyboards, tap the globe icon. Remember that your clever emoji icons may not show up correctly when viewed on a non-iOS device or computer.

Wondering where all your precious internal storage has gone? Some of those first-person shooter games you've installed may be taking up more room than you think. To get the definitive lowdown on how your iPhone's storage is being used up, launch the Settings app then select Settings and Usage.
It may take a few moments for your device to process everything that it has on board, but when the chart does appear you'll be able to see which apps are the worst offenders when it comes to hogging space (tap Show All Apps to see them all). It can also help you decide which apps to uninstall if you're having a clear out of your phone.

If you come across a lot of interesting content on the Web that you don't have time to read through immediately, then Safari for iOS has you covered. Tap the Share icon (to the left of the address bar) and choose Add to Reading List to save it for later. You can think of it as a temporary bookmarking system for individual pages you want to get around to later.
To get back to your reading list, tap the iCloud icon to the right of the address bar. These articles are synced across every device where you're signed into an iCloud account, so you can save a batch of pages on your iPhone to catch up with on your laptop (or vice versa). Swipe left on an entry to delete it.

Khe khe khe kheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Manure supporters will like this ... .... ooops no way I do not support the Old Trashford boys ... ... .Come on you Gunners .... . .

Did you know it's possible to use your iPhone to fall asleep to a playlist or podcast? Open up the Clock app and tap the When Timer Ends button to select what happens after the countdown has finished (this button may be labelled with an alarm name instead). Choose Stop Playing from the list and iOS will automatically cut out your audio after the designated number of hours and minutes have passed.
The feature can come in handy if you want to fall asleep to your favourite chill out album or you want to get a discreet warning when it's time to do something else. It could also work for a game of pass the parcel, of course, but the traditional options are probably more straightforward.

You don't have to settle for the default text size on your iPhone if you find it difficult to read. Open up the Settings app, choose General and then Accessibility, and the Larger Text option will appear — select it and you can use the on-screen slider to make the default font larger or smaller as required.
The Accessibility menu includes a whole host of options for people who have difficulty using the iPhone as it's initially set up, but some of them can come in handy for everyone. The mono audio option, for example, can be used when you're keeping one ear on your music and one ear on the outside world.

The Do Not Disturb feature in iOS is a real bonus for those times when you're busy and you don't want any interruptions unless it's about something really, really urgent. From the Do Not Disturb section of the Settings app you can select Allow Calls From to choose who is able to get through to you with a phone call — it helps if you've already set up a suitable group in your contacts or marked some individuals as favourites.
The Do Not Disturb status can be activated manually or you can schedule it to kick in automatically at certain times of day (when you're at the office, perhaps, or when Match of the Day is just starting). Note that the feature only affects the volume of calls, so incoming communications from anyone not on your VIP list will be silenced rather than blocked.

You don't have to stick with the wallpaper images that Apple has served up for your iPhone — you can use any picture you like for your mobile's home screen backdrop. To take advantage of the parallax effect introduced with the iPhone 5s and 5c, use your photo editing package of choice to make sure your images are 1536 x 1040 pixels (if they are exactly the same 1136 x 640 resolution you won't get any parallax effect).
The tilting effect can be previewed while you're setting your wallpaper too, so you can make sure that your image works as intended before committing yourself. Pictures that have some depth to them work best — if you're needing inspiration, check out Wallbase or Desktoppr.

If you don't have a car then you probably don't want your iPhone throwing up driving directions every time you're trying to get from one place to another. Within Maps you can tell your phone whether it should default to walking or driving directions so you can get the most relevant instructions up the first time you search for a route.
Delve into the Settings app and find the Maps section — Driving and Walking are the two options that are available under the Preferred Directions heading, so tick the one you want. You can also switch between miles and kilometres here, should you prefer the European way of measuring distance.

The iPhone keyboard has a handy feature that lets you set up shortcuts or acronyms for phrases you use a lot of the time. You can take advantage of them to save yourself repeating the same series of taps or when you're in a rush and can't type out an entire message. From the General page of Settings choose Keyboard and then Add New Shortcut to create one.
There's also the option to create preset text message replies that you can quickly fire off when you're unable to take a call ('I'm in a really important meeting right now' and so on). To set up your replies, open Settings, choose Phone and then select Respond with Text.

One of the most useful security features built into your Apple handset is the Find My iPhone feature (which also works for iPads and Macbooks). It lets you sign into your iCloud account on the Web and then see your iPhone on a map, play a call sound (if you've lost it) and wipe it remotely (if it's been stolen).
The feature needs to be activated on your handset first though. If you didn't already enable Find My iPhone when you set up the device for the first time, launch the Settings app and choose iCloud. The Find My iPhone option should be at the foot of the list of settings.

Huenda wakaongeza one or two things kuwavuruga wasiojua ubora wa kitu. Any new item is judged after a year or so.

BTW tangu March walisema ingetoka in two weeks subiri huenda ukashiba kabla haijatoka.

Since the iPhone 6 Plus (pictured) launched on Friday, reports have emerged that 'a small but growing number' of owners are claiming the frame bends if the device is left in pockets for an extended period of time. An Apple support employee has since revealed the firm may replace bent devices - but only on a case-by-case basis

WHY IS THE iPHONE 6 PLUS BENDING - AND HOW CAN IT BE SOLVED?

The reason for the bend is due to the iPhone 6 Plus being made out of aluminium.

Aluminium is a relatively soft metal and is fairly ductile and flexible so, if enough pressure is applied, it will bend and move.

According to iMore, no part of either of the new iPhones has more than a quarter of an inch (0.64cm) of aluminium in any spot.

This means that, in areas of the phones that are weakest, it's possible it could be susceptible to bending.

This is noticeable in images, with many of the bends occurring near the volume buttons and the SIM card slot.

These areas have segments of the shell cut out to make room for the buttons and SIM card, so there is less aluminium - and they are more likely to bend.

To stop the phone bending, users need to ensure that they do not put increased pressure on the middle of the phone.

For example, do not have it sideways in a pocket, as your pocket will push it against your leg, possibly causing bending.

Putting it in your back pocket could also have a similar effect, so storing it in a shirt pocket or bag might be a better option.

Another option would be to make sure you have a case for the phone so that it can maintain its rigidity even when pressure is applied.

article-2767465-219DB1CE00000578-111_634x369.jpg

Other devices have been released recently that were specifically designed to have a curved frame, including the LG G Flex (pictured). The phone is said to be more comfortable to hold, and easier to place in a back pocket

The jury is still out.

Mapovu ya nini sasa, Iphone recall in the process huhitaji mimi kuweka mfukoni. Naona huamini wanayosema wengine?

.. .. upo hapo? ... shauri yako that is the difference between us.

''Apple shares lose £12bn as iPhone 6 is hit by new fault: Stock loses all gains it had made since launch of device last week
  • The huge losses equate to a 3.5 per cent drop in share price
  • Devices were cut off from signal and data networks by software update
  • Update for iOS 8.0.1 also killed off the new fingerprint access function
  • Apple has withdrawn the software, rather than issued a fix for it
  • New iPhone 6 Plus has already been mocked because it bends in pockets''

Unagoogle siku moja then unadeclare kampuni imepotea...uuuwi!!!

Tunarudi kwenye agenda ya mwanzo niliyoweka jinsi ya kutumia Iphone 5 na 5s ukasema ndio naileta wakati wewe hukuweza kuileta yaani uliona why mimi nimeileta na nikakwambia any new item ikitoka ni lazima uipe muda kufahamu kama a) quality inaendana na bei, B) what is said is what it does.

Up to now Apple has gone into a mode of telling customers that their items are gone be fixed and they should do that as soon as possible ....

For you to produce the best ni katika kuingia katika mikiki mikiki kama hii, ni jambo la kushangaza unaongelea ati iSO 8.02 ambayo wenyewe Iphone wamesema hawataki kuweka patches tena, huendi na wakati bali uko behind I do not know for how many hours, jana walisema ''Apple has withdrawn the software, rather than issued a fix for it''. Hizi ndio fact zenyewe wewe umekalia kubisha tu mara oh unatumia red colour etc ... ... does that look red to you?

Mimi natumia kitu baada ya kufanya udadisi wangu na kuona kinafaa kwa shughuli zangu wewe upo hapa unapiga debe bora kimetoka apple ... .. . BTW if they bring quality why not.

unaweza kupunguza ukubwa hayo maandishi? yanaumiza macho kusoma.
Cheers.

Usisome kama una macho mabovu nani kakulazimisha? Sina sababu ya kuchungulia mauzo ya iphone nina shughuli zangu muhimu wewe endelea kuchungulia its none of my business. Ati standard za NASA, kwani NASA ndio kipimo chako? Hicho kimombo chako cha shule za kata usilete hapa, Recall haimaanishi kila simu lazima irudi makao makuu ya Iphone, wanunuzi wameshaelezwa warudishe simu ambazo zina matatizo kwenye stores walizonunua. Phew!

Kudos everything is well and good alamsiki.

-unaweza kunionesha niliposema hakuna simu 9 zilizopinda?
