Masoud Kipanya is wrong about SUA

These are among the first products of B.Sc. Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, who decided to venture into agriculture against all odd to show it can be done.

Infact, with the quality of training SUA is offering nothing is impossible. SUA can even train rats to detect landmines faster and efficiently than machines!! The rats can diagnose tuberculosis faster than machines and and with amazing accuracy!! Ije human being kuwa banker?

I also rememeber this guy, one of the big shots at International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Prof Salema, tena kasomea udungo, au naye alipewa hiyo kazi na the so called system mbovu ya Tanzania? Wenye hoja muflis watasema oooh kaingilia kazi za El Baradei
Mbona hamumpingi Tibaijuka? Naye alipelekwa na system ya Bongo?
Na Mshindo Msolla? Kasomea udongo, akawa coach wa Taifa Stars... Kaingilia kazi... Na wako wengi tu .... Basi hakuna kazi itayobaki... Jamaa wa SUA wataendelea kuzizoa!!

Daily News Reporter in Dodoma, 30th July 2009 @ 00:49,

MOROGORO-based University of Sokoine ranked fourth best university in East and Central Africa last year, Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Ms Mwantumu Mahiza told the National Assembly yesterday.

Ms Mahiza said this while responding to Bububu Member of Parliament, Masolwa Cosmas Masolwa (CCM) who asked why SUA was allocated vast tracts of land which it does not put to optimum use.

Ms Mahiza said the university has an area of 2,376 hectares at the main campus in Morogoro, 1,050 hectares at Solomon Mahlangu campus also in Morogoro, 840 hectares of leased forest from Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism at Olmotonyi in Arusha and 320 hectares at Mazumbai campus in Tanga.

"Land use by the university is per its 2005 plan which includes short and long term uses.
"However, the land use plan takes into account the number of students enrolled, degree courses, educational needs, research, farmers training and production of crops," Ms Mahiza said.

In his supplementary question, Mr Masolwa asked what benefits have the country's only agriculture training institution of higher learning brought to the neighbouring villagers at its campuses.

The Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Professor Jumanne Maghembe, said SUA has done studies that benefited its neighbours, the country and region.

"Research results in hybrid maize, beans and rice have benefited the public in general as our farmers have made use of such improved varieties. But SUA has already done a lot in improving livestock breeds," Prof Maghembe said.

Cassava processing

Matumizi ya Jatropha kwa biofuels (by bio fools?)

Mchanganuo wa virutubisho kwenye vyakula vya watoto

N.k.

Dear all,

This debate reminds me of a similar one we had several years ago at SUA.
Undergraduate training as we provide it at SUA produces an all round
grounded individual able to fit anywhere, even becoming a preacher if one
chooses to!. We train people to be able (to have the competency) to do
certain things not to become yz, which does not exclude agriculture or
farming. Even in developed countries, graduates do not always end up doing
exactly what they were trained to become, in certain fields such as
engineering, many end up becoming computer programmers, I remember Professor
Mbassa having said so then!; computer engineers end becoming managers,
lawyers as politician and in Tanzania erstwhile Doctors ending up as
politicians isn't surprising!!.

It should please every SUA alumni that one employer remarked to me recently
that their company which is spread widely in the most remote regions of this
country prefer to employ SUA graduates to those of a renown local university
for their resilience, competency and hard work spirit. Is this not enough
reason for us to cheer up but not be complacent?

Usually, a 10pages paper or so can be summarised and presented in just one cartoon. In this case interpreting the same need well focused, analytical and with fresh mind guys to comprehend what the cartoonist meant in his/her cartoon. I'm afraid lack of these is what makes this discussion so long and some turning it to a profession and background gymnastic. On the other hand, it's the inefficiencies in the agricultural sector and labour market in general that perhaps propagates the argument in a non productive way. I believe, if the labour market was okay, agricultural sector growing at the right pace the argument would have been different despite that SUA graduates still would have worked in other sectors as Banking, service, etc.

Potentially, I don't see any harm with the cartoon as presented by Masoud Kipanya. There few exceptions which need not to be mixed in this discussion. Medical profession (Veterinary Medicine & Medical Science) in this case can be treated as rare profession where we don't expect people from these profession to work in Banks, etc other than in their field. In my opinion its not right/polite to justify the SUA curricular to work in Banks and other sectors other than Agriculture same was its not polite to argue that SUA graduate should only work in Agricultural sector and not otherwise. We should now be thinking and deliberating on how to stimulate further growth of agricultural sector as a catalyst to spearhead growth of other sectors.

Masoud is not wrong, he is damn right on the money.

BiG uP kIpaNya

The main purpose of the debate is to boost your morale towards your studies at university, most of people back then saw agriculture as failing sector and student were afraid to become losers as a result of studying agriculture.
Due to that the university come up with new courses and approach which will allow the graduate to be competent in the workforce, many of the student in SUA study there as they are last resort and not that their want to study agriculture thus there such mentality.

Masoud kipanya, recently posted a cartoon, depicting a SUA graduate working in bank with a line saying "Hii ndio Bongo, nimemaliza chuo kikuu cha kilimo cha sokoine lakini niko kaunta benki", a statement of the sort. Masoud, like many Tanzanians, are ignorant of the curriculum, even degree programs offered at SUA. The original BSc Agriculture of SUA offered in 1980s, had specialisations and final year students used to specialise in different fields including Agricultural Economics. People like Prof. Anna Tibaijuka graduated from SUA with BSc Agriculture with specialisation in economics and today she is leading UNHABITAT. Since the 1990s SUA has been a dgree of MSc. in Agricultural Economics. Recently, SUA started degree programs in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness and an MBA with biase to agriculture. My dear Masoud agriculture is a sector, not farming. The degree of agriculture offered by SUA considers all components of agriculture, from engineering, economics, communication, processing etc.
Being a graduate of SUA does not mean that you are committed to a farm or the likes. Even more, people have natural talents. Masoud never attended a university offering a degree in "cartoonology", but he is doing fine with his toons. Likewise, Tracy chapman has a degree in Agriculture but chose the music career. One of the best music producers in Tanzania Hermes B, is graduate of SUA. Do you remember Prof Madundo Mtambo, a man who shocked Simba SC in the 1980s? A SUA graduate. Graduates of SUA have prospered in different fields (not just banking) including politics where you have people like Prof. Msolla, David Mathayo, Hawa Ghasia, Jumanne Maghembe etc.
The secret is, financial institutions that employ student from SUA are impressed by their perfomances, and thats not just CRDB. PRIDE Tanzania is proud os SUA graduates, so is FINCA and NMB. Afterall, all those people employed in Tanzanian banks are not graduates of BCom, or finance, or Banking. Most of them have degrees and they undergo inhouse training. The best ones prosper, like the SUA graduate you see behind the counter. Be warned that SUA graduates are doing fine in agriculture itself. A good example is Shambani graduates, a company formed and owned by young SUA graduates. I dont believe that Masoud's father-in-law has a degree in agriculture? I gues he own farmms in Mbeya...au hii ndio Bongo?

OTHERWISE SIJAONA MCHANGO MADHUBUTI WA SUA KATIKA MAPINDUZI YA KILIMO! kwa Kiasi kikubwa MSIMBEZE MASOUD maana He doesn't feel WAT you proud of!!!

I happen to search something on google and come across this this head.
In few words, I would say this was one of the best analysis on SUA

They say if you live in a glasshouse, don't throw stones.

Masoud Kipanya yeye mwenyewe ame graduate university gani?

Kwa bahati mbaya hujaambatanisha Cartoon aliyoweka Kipanya as Reffernce..
Take it as a challenge.. "
Big Up sana kwa Kazi zako nyingi nzuri unazozitoa .. Endelea kukaza Kamba .
