The nearly 200 members of rival biker gangs who engaged in a deadly shootout in Texas are being pictured for the first time in mugshots taken by a local jail struggling to keep up with the workload.
Nine were killed and dozens injured in the fight that broke out between at least five biker gangs at a restaurant in Waco at noon on Sunday. After a SWAT team broke up the fight, 170 of these gang members were arrested.
On Monday, each suspect was charged with engaging in organized crime in connection to a capital murder case, and a judge ordered most to be held on a $1million bond. Sheriff Parnell McNamara said each of the suspects is being booked at McLennan County Jail, but that some might be moved to other facilities due to the sheer amount of arrests.
It was revealed Monday that the fight was likely planned by at least one of the gangs.
What started as a physical fight in the bathroom at the Twin Peaks Bar and Grill around 12:15pm spilled out into the bar and rapidly escalated to involve chains, clubs, knives and gunfire on a quiet strip. Employees and diners, including young children, scrambled and many took shelter in the freezer as hundreds of gang members ran on a rampage around the booths, according to KXXV.
In the parking lot, a SWAT team shot dead at least one biker and surrounded the rest. When the shooting ended, bodies were scattered across the tarmac and cars were riddled with bullet holes. On Monday, officials said that some of the nine killed may have been shot by responding police officers.
'In 34 years of law enforcement, this is the worst crime scene, the most violent crime scene that I have been involved in,' Waco police Sgt W Patrick Swanton said at a Sunday press conference. 'There were dead everywhere, blood everywhere.'
He also turned on the restaurant, Twin Peaks, for failing to let officers in to monitor the situation.
'If you have a police department asking for your assistance as a business, you ought to pay attention to that,' he said on Monday. 'If you don't bad things can happen, as evidenced here today.'
On Monday it emerged that Twin Peaks company has revoked the franchise agreement for the Waco restaurant.
'We will not tolerate the actions of this relatively new franchisee and are revoking their franchise immediately,' the company said.
The company, which has 13 restaurants in Texas, blamed the restaurant's managers who 'chose to ignore the warnings and advice from both the police and our company, and did not uphold the high security standards we have in place to ensure everyone is safe at our restaurants'.
Swanton added that the restaurant would not be able to serve alcohol for the next week but added he hoped the restaurant would choose to close its doors during that time as a sign of respect to the community.
Swanton said that 18 uniformed SWAT officers and four state agents were stationed outside the restaurant in marked vehicles just before the shooting broke out, a change from the originally reported 10 officers.
Those officers included a Waco rookie and an assistant chief who helped break up the fight after it descended into deadly violence.
Additionally, a few off-duty officers who were shopping at the adjacent strip mall came running when they heard gunfire, despite not being properly armed.
'Those officers' reactions to a very hostile, deadly situation saved citizens' lives,' Swanton said at the news conference.
There have also been fears for law enforcement officials investigating the bullet-riddled crime scene, since gang presence has only increased in the town since the shooting.
Authorities believe some gangs have issued a 'green light' to hit back at law enforcement, and Santon urged them Monday to stay peaceful.
'Let's not add to the body count,' he said.
On Sunday, witnesses described the scene in the quiet commercial shopping strip as a war zone.
'There were maybe 30 guns being fired in the parking lot, maybe 100 rounds,' diner Michelle Logan, 37, told the Waco Tribune. 'They just opened fire. There's a lot of people in the hospital, a lot of people shot.'
She added that she did not get the impression that the incident was a random confrontation, telling the publication: 'It was a setup.'
uthorities said it appears one gang set up the other after arranging a meeting. Multiple police sources told the Waco Tribune it was a fight between the Cossacks and the Bandidos. Based on their leathers, it appears the Scimitars, Los Pirados, the Veterans, and the Leathernecks were also involved
