Majembe barred from inspecting Dar buses
BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER
9th December 2009
Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner William Lukuvi
Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner William Lukuvi announced last night suspension of Majembe Auction Mart from carrying out the inspection of commuter buses, saying there were legal loopholes in the implementation of the exercise.
Majembe was contracted by the Surface and Marine Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) to inspect and levy fines on commuter buses violating transport regulations.
Reports reaching this paper last night said the RC clarified that the move was to allow bus operators to make the necessary adjustments to voluntarily comply with transport regulations.
Thousands of Dar es Salaam commuters, especially in Tabata suburb, were on Monday stranded at bus stops and forced to board pick-ups during the morning rush after some bus operators staged a strike protesting the fines levied by Majembe for violations of transport regulations.
