TANZANIA’s incumbent President John Magufuli’s undisputable landslide win in the October 2020 elections will implicitly emanate from the incredible majority support of the people he served incredibly well, with reforms that touched the country’s weakest of the weak. “Clearly Magufuli’s campaign meetings are historical. He pulls multitudes far greater than most other politicians in Post Nyerere’s multi-party elections,” says Derek Murusuri, a political analyst and media Specialist in Dar es Salaam.

The majority support Dr. Magufuli currently enjoys, is the result of his hard work, the tenacious acts he rendered to the ordinary people which touched their hearts and minds. This is the largest group of the Tanzanians who could have probably considered themselves sidelined. Magufuli’s mammoth gatherings in Mwanza, Shinyanga, Musoma and wherever he goes in his campaigns is directly proportional to the reforms he implemented from 2015 he came to power, which transformed the country’s economy, qualifying Tanzania a middle economy nation.

Turn-key large public investments for human development
“Look, it is obvious, large scale public infrastructure are rising all over the country, tarmac roads, water services, healthy infrastructure and medical supplies, energy, disciplined civil service with a tangible trickle-down to an ordinary person, improved transport and transportation. This is not only hard work done but also time excellently spent,” notes Dr. Hassan Abbas, Permanent Secretary in Information Ministry who is also the Government Chief Spokesperson.

No human development can ever exist without public infrastructure. Cognizant of this truth, Dr. Magufuli, an accomplished Chemist and Mathematician, invested a lot in the infrastructure critical for human development. This was deliberate and strategic turn-key investment pathway. Developing countries which do not prioritize development budgets, will continue to languish in abject poverty. There is a direct relationship between infrastructure and human development. It is because of this approach Magufuli applied which makes his people support him for the second term in office.

“We have built many roads in this country, we have connected electricity, water projects have been implemented, hospitals have been built and many other projects, so do not elect people who do not know how these things are done,” Magufuli addressed his supporters amid a standing ovation in a fully packed Kambarage Stadium in a diamond-rich town of Shinyanga recently. “In his mining policy reforms, President Magufuli allowed small scale miners rights to mine in demarcated areas, lifting restrictions laid on them. His Government supported them to increase their capacity. His policies paid off,” confirms Dr. Abbas in one of his press briefings in Capital Dodoma, recently.

A small miner is now one of the Tanzania’s list of billionaires. The mining collections increased almost thrice from Shillings 198 billion to Shillings 520 billion. This is an unbelievable increase of over 260% in just five years. Small-miners used to struggle for the market and sometimes fell in the wrong hands of crooks. Today, the local market is largely available and promising. “Dr. Magufuli’s leadership is human-centric. He is touched by the needs of his country men and women. He is quick to respond to their needs. This is why he pulls crowds. His road to victory is clear,” says Hussein Odada, a Kenyan political analyst.

Lest Tanzanians Forget Peace, Safety and Personal Security

On Peace and security, lest people forget that despite its political stability, Tanzania’s personal security was not guaranteed with bandits, hooligans and racketeers all over. When he came to power, Magufuli dealt with them to restore order, decency, discipline efficiency. Unless the driver was new in Tanzania, motorists would not stop at the zebra crossing to allow pedestrians cross over to the other side of the road. They either criss cross to risk their lives or wait for a long time until there were no vehicles or a jam luckily builds up to cross. Under Magufuli, motorists stop at the zebra crossing. What a discipline and respect for ordinary pedestrians. This is why Magufuli is people’s choicest.

Presidential Leadership

He has proved presidential leadership, public persuasion and crisis leadership. Magufuli became Africa’s top most leader, perhaps world’s number one President to show leadership in dealing with Corona Pandemic. He saw things which other leaders came to agree with his position weeks or months later.

Visionary Leadership

President Magufuli has proved visionary leadership. He has done extremely well in economic leadership. Tanzania is among the five fast growing economies in Africa. In just five years, he swung Tanzania to the middle income bracket, five years before the projection.

On Moral Authority and Administrative Skills

Most Tanzania and Africans admire his moral authority. When other presidential aspirants like CHADEMA’s Tundu Lissu is adamant on legalizing gays and lesbians in Tanzania, President Magufuli is calling on every Tanzania to pray and ask God’s leading in the affairs of his country.

Magufuli has exceptional administrative skills. He is not easily enraged. He sees the needs rather than minor differences. He holds a unique way of achieving results. It is because of inherent tendency in him, he accepted a number of opponents, those who abused him before as Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Regional Administrative Officers and others Directors to sensitive public entities.

“Magufuli is a premier example for Africa’s contemporary political leadership. The law of cause and effect is enforce here. Magufuli has kept his election promises, in fact he has exceeded the expectations of his voters despite many challenges he faced during his first term. He has touched their lives hence they are convinced to vote him to power for the second term.
